Yo, iv been looking around for some good music for a trailer to a fun personal project im putting together. However I havent anything suitable. I am looking for something that starts out soft, and then later explodes, in full orchestra and choire. There is one song that is used heavily in movie trailers that is like this, but I dont remember the name. Sorry if thats not much to go on.

Any ideas?

One of the tracks off the soundtrack "Aliens" it's used in almost every action/thriller movie trailer. It does rock, even though it is quite over used. I have the CD somewhere ... I can let you know in a day or so, the exact name .... something like "Ripley's Rescue"

Orff's "O fortuna" Carmina Burana is used a lot. Fits your bill, but with voices instead of just orchestral.

Thanks a bunch guys, those where great. However can anyone think of any more songs similar to O Fortuna? Something darker.

You need to get a copy of Classical Thunder I. It might have a lame name but that CD is perfect for what you are looking for. That has all that sorts of stuff:

Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra Op. 30 Introduction

Wagner: Die Walkure: Ride of the Valkyries

Holst: The Planets Opus 32 Mars Bringer of War

Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite #2 Montagues and Capulets

    Khachaturian: Gayane: Sabre Dance

    Rossini: William Tell Overture

Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite #1 Opus 46 In the Hall of the Mountain King

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition The Hut on Fowl's Legs and The Great Gate at Kiev

Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man

Beethoven: Symphony #5 in C Minor Opus 67 Allegro con brio

Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique Opus 14 March to the Scaffold

Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring: Sacrificial Dane

    Respighi: Feste romane Circus Maximus

Bizet: Carmen Suite #1 Les toreadors

    Sibelius: Finlandia Opus #26

    Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture Opus 49

Anyway, either see if you can get that CD or else look for some of those songs individually if you like.

Wow thanks a bunch Colander, will take me a while to go through those, but they look promising. Are they just orchestral, or is there choire type stuff mixed in as well?

The Black Rider is a good sugjestion too.

Koyaanisqatsi is just... well its a little weird.

Thanks a bunch guys, I didnt think i'd get this many responses.

Colander provided excellent leads. Your best chance is with classical music anyway. You may, however, also like to consider pieces from the soundtracks of movies like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Dune. Maybe soundtracks from the Aliens movie series too.

Will you post the end result here, Falcon?

You may have to do some editing and I'm not sure if it fits but for inspiration check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QahzbgUVwk from the Sunshine soundtrack by John Murphy/Underworld. (Edit: Oops, pipped)

And definitely the Deus Ex: Human Revolution soundtrack by Michael McCann. For example, the opening credits scene is one of the best in any game or Hollywood movie even: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIqJaT3cvf8
