Rockstar Games will bring its popular Grand Theft Auto franchise to Apple's latest iOS devices to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the game's third episode.

The company announced on Thursday that Grand Theft Auto III will be coming to ?select new generation iOS? devices this fall, specifically citing the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

GTA III was originally launched in 2001 for Sony's PlayStation 2 console, and quickly became the best-selling video game of the year. As of Mar. 26, 2008 the game has sold 14.5 million units worldwide, prompting the studio to add five more titles to the franchise.

The sandbox-style action-adventure follows the main character Claude through the open world of Liberty City, combining elements from third-person shooting and driving games.

In addition to the iOS version, Rockstar will also launch an Android version of the game this year with support for a variety of 2011 smartphones and tablets. The company also announced that a limited-action figure of the lead character will be available for pre-order, with a MSRP of $149.99.

Mobile versions of the game will be available to play at the New York Comic Con at Javits Center this weekend, with the full game set to debut in the App Store at an unspecified date later this fall.

    Disgusting.

I will never understand the giant disconnect between allowing a game like this which promotes violence, crime and beating up women and the fact that a naked bum or boob is something we must all be forbidden in case it corrupts our minds. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad and stupid.

    Lol?

You do know you dont have to do any of those things, right? And that actual studies have shown minimal (if any) effects in the short term (few hours) and none in the long term?

Every person should decide for themselves whether to buy a game. There should be no censorship.

If you don't want your minor children to play, how about PARENTING and don't let them buy apps without approval. Oh yeah, we've forgotten how to do that as a society.

All I'm saying is, don't rub your morals in my face.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this article was whether or not Apple would allow it. But I guess they will because there are already GTA games on both the iOS and Mac App Stores.

Outsourcing responsibility and trying to enforce what you think is moral on the world is not the way to go, these things already have agreed ratings applied which should be enough censorship. Let people have their own opinions rather than try and ban/censor. It's only a game for god's sake! Anybody who takes something fictitious like a game/story/movie and causes chaos/ hurt in real life is a danger to people/society full stop. If you don't have the capability to know the difference you are a danger to anyone regardless of what you watch/study/play!

This is not the debut of this franchise on iOS. The GTA IV-era Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was designed specifically for handhelds, originally the Nintendo DS and subsequently the PlayStation Portable, then ported to iPhone/iPod touch and finally upgraded to HD for the iPad last year). GTA III is a 10-year-old console and PC game being converted to the latest handheld devices, which, not coincidentally, are approximately as powerful as gaming PCs 10 years ago.

People who complain about sex and violence in GTA complain as though it's the only video game with an M rating, and don't know enough about video games in general to know why GTA is successful (hint: it's not the sex and violence, it's the design quality of the open world environments, varied, discoverable sandbox gameplay combined with non-linear, very well-written storyline progression, very clever fish-out-of-water humor and social satire, and the best soundtracks in any audio-visual medium). Targeting GTA for moral criticism is like Greenpeace targeting Apple for environmental abuses.

Rockstar Games has a whole lot in common with Apple when it comes to brand management, secrecy, obsession with detail, marketing mystique, putting creative goals ahead of caring what critics or analysts blather about, and a devoted fanbase. Rockstar does what it does almost exactly the same way Apple does what it does.

    Oh Please.......

There has been violence, blood and gore since the beginning of video games.

I remember playing some game on the Apple ][ when I was a kid called Bilestoad. It was you with an ax VS somebody else with an axe. There was plenty of blood and decapitations.

Videogames aren't real and anything goes in video games and movies. Anybody who would be negatively affected by a video game, movie, book or song is not mentally well. They are abnormal and there are institutions for these kind of people.

People who argue that they need access to their porn are more of a concern. First the addicted need for it is one thing, but 99% actually cement their objectification of virtual women it a perception of women in general through real physical action...masturbation.

99.99% of the people who play violent games do not follow through with a physical action to shift a virtual experience into the physical world. The .01% who do get far more attention.

It seems that the amount of continual low level violence committed against women in society is huge (objectification is a critical mental element for this violence), and it is far greater than the amount of male on male gang warfare. Not to mention the mental and emotional violence.

    I think your wrong...

there was no violence, blood or gore in....Pong!

Come on, prove me wrong. That was about as early as video games get, so your "since the the beginning" is not correct.

Women should watch more porn, and then maybe they'd learn a thing or two. One of the worst things in the world is an inexperienced woman or a prude. These kind of women are not keepers and they're basically worthless from a male perspective.

A good woman is a slut in bed and I wouldn't have it any other way.

But what did the two lines and the ball actually represent? A little, innocent dot on the screen being violently bounced around between two brutal sticks. And if you missed the ball, then you lost a life! That sounds pretty violent to me.

And I also remember some car game from the 70's I believe. I forget the name, it was an arcade game, but you had to run over real people!.

You should be consigned to a Gertrude from hence forth.

Who and what is a Gertrude you ask?

A self assured women twice your weight and four times your strength, that has no time for your weakness and less time for your sexual needs, be more than enough wits and force to keep you cuckold. This way you would have to rely absolutely and completely on porn for your dreams.

But then again you sound like you may already have a Gertrude

If you saw that, you were violent before you even started playing pong

I am not sending you any greetings cards as i might get fingers in boxes in return.

People are being killed en masse the world over, human rights are being institutionally violated, curable diseases are killing millions and there is suffering and poverty and death everywhere.

This is a game. A pretty cool game, too. I loved this game 10 years ago and I'll be very happy to buy it for iPad.

I am delighted to report that I don't have any Gertrude. Judging from your description, it sounds like something that I would not like too much.

I am also glad to report that my current girl has been trained rather well and she is the opposite of a Gertrude.

And look how wonderfully balanced and nonviolent you turned out. Just sayin'.

I fully concur! And what a mighty fine specimen I turned out to be.

As for being nonviolent, the biggest living thing that I probably ever killed in my entire life is a mosquito or maybe a bee or two.
