Celebrities, CEOs & a former president attended Steve Jobs memorial

A private memorial for Steve Jobs, held Sunday at Stanford Memorial Church, was attended by a long list of notable people, including politicians, actors, musicians and peers of the late Apple co-founder.

Though Apple was "tight-lipped" about the hundreds of people who attended the event, Apple 2.0 obtained some of the names of those who attended. They include former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Google CEO Larry Page, and Adobe co-founders John Warnock and Chuck Geschke.

Also in attendance was former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, who also remains a member of Apple's board of directors. Actor Tim Allen, who plays the character Buzz Lightyear in the "Toy Story" films by Pixar -- a company acquired by Jobs in 1986 and sold to Disney for $7.4 billion in 2006 -- was also present.

Bono, lead singer of the band U2, was there as well. U2 and Apple have been closely tied for years, with songs by the band appearing in Apple's commercials, and a special U2-branded iPod was released by the company in 2004.

Others present included actor Stephen Fry, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, former California first lady Maria Shriver, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, and singer Joan Baez.

News of the memorial for Jobs was first revealed last week. Though Apple was secretive about the event, Apple 2.0 reported that a local news helicopter circled overhead Sunday during the service at Stanford Memorial Church.

Sunday's memorial was an opportunity for a larger number of people to pay their respects to Jobs. A smaller service, featuring family and friends of the late Apple co-founder, was held earlier this month, just a few days after he passed away.

Jobs died on Wednesday, Oct. 5 after a long bout with cancer. He was 56 years old. The list of some memorial attendees follows in alphabetical order:

as much as i like to see so many people attend, gtfo micheal dell. Your obviously there as a publicity stunt. I would not want someone i hate attending my funeral for sure

Every time I read something like this I get a jolt as I keep blocking out that Steve is gone and I am suddenly forced to recognize the truth.

Re Dell: Is there something we are missing regarding his apparent self injection into all of this? Was he secretly a great friend of Steve and we didn't know? I find it hard to believe the organizers would allow him in without there being some connection beyond self publicity. Or maybe anyone could go.

Michael Dell? Rupert Murdoch?? Ugh. I also thought Apple and U2 had a falling-out, and as a result U2 dumped Apple and teamed with CrackBerry instead.

Many tech website posts, mainly by self-appointed critics, try to minimize the innovations and accomplishments of Jobs and Apple. They try to argue that Steve Jobs didn't really do much of anything. You know, the "tablets were around years before the iPad" talking point. But this partial list of memorial attendees proves otherwise. These people, especially Michael Dell, know that Steve Jobs turned their worlds upside-down and inside-out. He showed many of them, like Bill ("I want Mac!") Gates, the way to do it right.

I can not believe that the snake(s) in the grass from Google would have the nerve to show up. It is one thing to compete, but another to pretend to be a friend and then double cross.

You do understand the ceremony was invite only, right? So, somebody at Apple invited the guy. I wonder why. Perhaps, Jobs and Dell got along OK. Dell was one of the first people to publicly repay respect to Jobs.

Further, that whole comment where Dell said he would shut Apple down and give the money back to shareholders was 1) taken out of context, and 2) somewhat understandable coming from a competitor and considering Apple's dire financial circumstances.

Finally, competitors who sometimes are friends often times say things publicly in the context of computing, but that doesn't undermine their personal relationship. Haven't you ever heard an opposing team that they might as well not even show up?

The biggest whole in this list is Woz, Andy Hertzfeld, Bill Atkinson, Burrell, Capps, etc. the original Mac team. The omission of one or two of these is understandable but to see none of them makes me wonder about this acknowledged "partial" list.

why are people asking why X person attended?

So what if things were said in public in the spirit of business competition.

Doesnt stop people being friends outside of this and having respect for eachother

Thats whats wrong with most of you these days. No Respect and cant separate aspects of lives.

Just because they compete with eachother healthily in public, doesnt mean that they cant meet for a coffee after and share a laugh

you expect them to be mortal enemies and "hate" eachother. Get a grip. They probably meet and laugh at how they play you fools against each other like a fiddle. I know I would.

Apple still sells the RED iPod. People might also remember Dell at one time sold Apple's iPod. I am sure that was made possible by Jobs and Dell talking, perhaps even developing a relationship.

People also might not remember but President Clinton and Hillary stayed with Jobs at his home when they attended their daughter's graduation at Stanford.

I was just reading one story that said that Page and his Wife were detained and questioned by police because they forgot their invitations.
