iCoud Mail which is free gets virtually no spam at all thanks to the excellent and trainable junk mail system, it is IMAP and syncs across all devices and is integrated deeply in many other Apple apps ... not sure why anyone with a Mac or iDevice would want for anything else. Obviously company mail and web based systems using domains are required too but as to these last century freebies such as hotmail, aol etc. ... they are so associated with spam I'd avoid them like the plague.

I somehow did not expect to see 'hotmail' and 'iPhone' in the same sentence.

Because not everyone feels like going to all their online accounts and changing their e-mail address, notifying all of their contacts, or maybe, you know just maybe, they use that service for instant messaging as well? I use gmail (will never touch Apple's solutions) but will always keep my Hotmail account active because of all my contacts on Windows Live Messenger and it's tied to my XBOX Live account. My Yahoo! account very active as well since I have a lot of people who use that as well for IM.

these are existing Hotmail users that are now using their iPhones etc to access their existing accounts. That's a bit different than the misleading headline.

Kinda sorta... But as an added bonus you are 99.999% more likely to get a virus or malware or some other communicable abnormality... YES I'm joking...

When people talk of email issues, it's amazing how often it turns out they use Hotmail.

Why the hell anyone would choose hotmail in this day and age is beyond me.

Spam dumpster. Why you would want that on your phone however is beyond me.

... or as a junk mailbox for those times when you enter a contest at the mall.

I think I'll get a hotmail address today... for all the reasons above.

Hotmail: A July 2011 post on the official Microsoft blog claimed Hotmail served 360 million unique users a month. According to August 2011 statistics cited by Yahoo! (see the About page here), Hotmail is the biggest webmail provider with over 330 million unique users. The latest Factsheet (albeit September 2010) from Microsoft notes that "Windows Live Hotmail is one of the world's largest e-mail providers with more than 355 million active accounts". In March, 2010, a Group Program Manager at Windows Live Hotmail wrote that the service had over 369 million active users.

I had no idea Hotmail was still around.

Just joking. I've had a Hotmail account for years that I solely use for junk mail signups. Meaning, I use it when I sign up for a new account to post or download or whatever reason that I want to maintain a barrier between them and me. I check it only when I sign up for something. Not sure I want that mixed in with my "legit" accounts on my phone.

I kind of look at hotmail addresses in the same light as AOL ones. Yes, some still have those, I think.

I think Apple reviews apps to make sure they follow Apple's guidelines. I don't think Apple cares if they work.

The point I was trying to make is that Google, Microsoft and Facebook should hire Apple to create their applications because the aforementioned companies can't seem to create applications that work and are pleasing to the eye.

If you own your own domain name you can use that with Hotmail for free, so you may have people using Hotmail without the @hotmail.com.

Also any live.com addresses? That's what I use.

I switched from using Hotmail & Yahoo to Gmail in early 2005 because both Hotmail & Yahoo mail were spam filled shit.

Then about 12 months ago I re-evaluated both Hotmail & Yahoo. Yahoo had improved but the biggest change by far was with Hotmail.

With Hotmail the spam filtering is now first class. In 12 months I haven't received a single spam email - that includes my new @live account as well as my very old @hotmail account that I whored to the Internet underworld for many many years.

Along with mail Hotmail also sync's contacts, calendars & reminders with my iDevices faultlessly.

I also found the Hotmail web UI to be the most intuitive and powerful of the three.

The two worst parts of Hotmail:
    • the actual @hotmail address which is generally looked down on as most people are working off knowledge from 5-10 years ago. You can get around this with an @live address or by using your own domain.

    • the ads which are displayed as graphics instead of text like in Gmail. The only way to remove ads is to pay for the service.

Overall the Hotmail pros certainly outweigh the cons.

Nope. Functionality is a strict criteria.

Non-working junk apps are rejected immediately.

    THIS!

Most posts in this thread have simply been opinions based on imagined view of Hotmail/Live today.

I suppose there had to be a stupid enough reason to create an account on this site.

I've used a hotmail account for years and don't have any intention of switching. In fact, I use gmail as my junk email account. If you're happy with google using you as their product, then that's your choice.

I realize it should be about preference, but anyone who believes hotmail isn't legitimate is obviously showing their ignorance and age.

Hey, thanks, I did not know that! I'll consider that when I finally set my self to moving my email accounts off of Google's services, which only seem to get worse over time.

Really? All free webmail solutions use you as their product. People bitch about Facebook privacy issues, yet anyone using a Yahoo, Hotmail, or gmail address are giving away their privacy too. I used my .Mac and MobileMe email account in part because, as a paid service I assumed Apple was less likely to be combing my email for targeted advertisements. Now that iCloud has switched this to a free solution, I'm a little nervous.

Hotmail is legitimate, but no more or less so than gmail - and I'm no more likely to use it for a legitimate means of communication than I am to use gmail for a legitimate means of communication.
