That is OK. Some people never gave up their horse and buggy either.

Yep, because of all those Apple ads on their website and all the ads built into Apple products and applications.
No, I get that this doesn't seem very 'Apple' to do. I've just tended to steer away from free webmail services in the past, and now my email is transitioning to be just that.
Good review. Now sign up for iCloud and compare that as well.

I switched from using Hotmail & Yahoo to Gmail in early 2005 because both Hotmail & Yahoo mail were spam filled shit.
Then about 12 months ago I re-evaluated both Hotmail & Yahoo. Yahoo had improved but the biggest change by far was with Hotmail.
With Hotmail the spam filtering is now first class. In 12 months I haven't received a single spam email - that includes my new @live account as well as my very old@hotmail account that I whored to the Internet underworld for many many years.
Along with mail Hotmail also sync's contacts, calendars & reminders with my iDevices faultlessly.
I also found the Hotmail web UI to be the most intuitive and powerful of the three.
The two worst parts of Hotmail:
the actual @hotmail address which is generally looked down on as most people are working off knowledge from 5-10 years ago. You can get around this with an @live address or by using your own domain.
the ads which are displayed as graphics instead of text like in Gmail. The only way to remove ads is to pay for the service.
Overall the Hotmail pros certainly outweigh the cons.
Pre IOS5 devices have to use Microsoft exchange? Sadly I must correct you, because Pre iOS 5 devices namely IOS 4 only have to press the button that says "Other" at the bottom of the mail service providers list. Then simply type their name, email address and password. Hotmail has been covered by IOS for quite some time as knowen providers however it simply was not listed as "Hotmail" in the mail service providers list.
Gladly I must correct you. In the summer of 2010 (June I think) hotmail enabled Active Sync. Pre-iOS 5 you chose "Exchange" and for a emal server you had to choose m.hotmailo.com plus your account info.
Using the "other" option setup a pop account which is a joke compared to Active Sync.
Most posts in this thread have simply been opinions based on imagined view of Hotmail/Live today.
Hotmail/Live services (mail being one of them) are probably better than iCloud right now. In 2010 Microsoft completely revamped the service. Just a few things...
Unlimited storage for email - for free.
First rate spam protection (new in 2010)
Webmail that has way more features than iCloud. It looks very much like Web mail in Exchange 2010/Office 365. (icloud looks better though)
Skydrive, 25gigs of free space for documents, photos, movies, music etc. This is all HTML 5 and you can share out folders, like mobileme gallery...oh wait that is gone now.
Mesh for syncing critical files (5gig) and settings such as favorites etc. Even works with a Mac
Office Web apps. These are trimmed down free versions of Office 2010 that are 1000x better than Google Doc's or even iWork.
Hey, we can't let silly things like facts get in the way of a good Anti-MS rant can we. If we did, then we would not be the Apple loyalists that we all are.

Most of these are anti-hotmail. I'm actually pro-microsoft most of the time.
Hey, thanks, I did not know that! I'll consider that when I finally set my self to moving my email accounts off of Google's services, which only seem to get worse over time.
.tsooJ
I didn't know about that either. I currently pay for hosting. It's not much, but I get a bill once a year that I could eliminate.
Do you know anything about privacy with their service? Can/will they scan all my mail and sell me to advertisers?
I've had my Hotmail account for over 10 years now. It was the first ever email account I ever owned and it is where I sent my first ever email.
Call me sentimental but I just couldn't get rid of it. Also, my iTunes account (roughly 7 years old) is linked to it so I couldn't get rid of it even if I wanted (yet...)
Really? All free webmail solutions use you as their product. People bitch about Facebook privacy issues, yet anyone using a Yahoo, Hotmail, or gmail address are giving away their privacy too.
Hotmail allows you to pay for the service to remove the ads if you wish.
The free service has ads, but Microsoft doesn't trawl through your email to target ads like Gmail does.
The downside of this is that the ads in Hotmail are prominent graphics, as opposed to the small text ads in Gmail.
Good review. Now sign up for iCloud and compare that as well.
iCloud mail has a very clean UI. Like Hotmail and Gmail it syncs email, contacts, calendars and reminders to iDevices without issue.
One big positive is no advertising.
To be perfectly honest though, iCloud mail is not in the same class as Gmail and Hotmail. It's like the Tata Nano of online services.
It's going to get you from point A to point B, but not much more.

As above, Gmail and Hotmail are better services. Apart from wanting to avoid advertising, I'm not sure why someone would use iCloud email over Gmail or Hotmail.
iCoud Mail which is free gets virtually no spam at all thanks to the excellent and trainable junk mail system, it is IMAP and syncs across all devices and is integrated deeply in many other Apple apps ... not sure why anyone with a Mac or iDevice would want for anything else. Obviously company mail and web based systems using domains are required too but as to these last century freebies such as hotmail, aol etc. ... they are so associated with spam I'd avoid them like the plague.
I get a fair bit of spam tbh, and it's still MobileMe mail to be honest. It only became free recently, and I'm sure the more people use it, the more it too will be associated with spam.
Now that iCloud has switched this to a free solution, I'm a little nervous.
iCloud isn't free, you need to buy Apple's products to get at it. That's where the money is made. It all serves to make their product more compelling.
It's really not that difficult: most companies are one-trick ponies. Apple sell gadgets, Microsoft sell Windows and Office, and Google sell consumer profiles. Everything they do, no matter how diverse it seems, leads back to strengthening that core product.

(I don't because I have a custom domain which apple doesn't support)

Who uses Hotmail? Spammers that's who.
Who uses Hotmail? Windows switchers that's who.
