Why the next case revision to the Powermac won't be white

Apple seems to like to mess with people when it comes to a unified 'look' for their products.

Just when you thought they had settled on Bondi with the B&W Powermac and the first iMac, they crossed it up with fruit colors.

Then they went with a graphite tone Powermac, and added a vastly simpler line of iMacs, including a 'graphite' version, then they zagged with the blue and orange (and later, lime green) iBook.

Then they switched the iMac to their "fall colors" lineup, threw out the sage (a bad move, IMO) and ruby (over time), falling to three basic colors, black, white and blue.

In the meantime, they release a bone white iBook, and a flat Titanium Powerbook and a white Powermac.

Then to top it off, they released a white iMac with chrome accents.

Minimilism seems to rule the day in Apple design, so I think they will break out of this with the product most likely to get a new case, the PowerMac.

If I had to guess, the new Powermac will be a striking but non-offensive color, maybe a dark blue with chrome accents. This will probably coincide with a repackaging of the displays to match.

A company as design-centric as Apple will be very sensitive to color in its products. Colors go in and out of fashion very quickly, and though Apple probably could claim a certain leadership in this area, I think their color choices are partly derived from trends already at work within the design field. That said, I'm not nearly tuned-in enough to guess what the next colors will be, but I don't think consistency across the full product line is Apple's first concern.

I'd be willing to risk a friendly wager that the new powermac will be black...

Sage! That's it. I had forgotten the name during a recent discussion.

    That was the best color.

I hope so! I've waited all my Mac-using life for a black PowerMac (yes, I had a 5xxx series... ah, those were the days...).

Black, sorry don't see it happening. Why? There are a lot of PeeCees out there in black, and even though Apple would outdesign (?) them, they wouldn't stand out quite as much. And well, Apple (as well as users of) likes to think and more importantly be different

Not sure it it will be black... It would make it look so... DELL. ugh.

I would think metallic... maybe metal and black? (notes that DVD Studio Pro & WebObjects boxes are still white, but have a black stripe on the side)

Black would be cliche. I don't see Apple moving in that direction.

White Power Mac?? QuickSilver is certainly not white.

If not black then how about...

    puce? salmon? vomit?

C'mon you've gotta admit that something that looks as good as that black semi-translucent pro mouse would look even better as a full-blown tower. A Black Tower...

Baclk wouldn't be Dell-black. It would be a sweet looking glossy or deep metallic black or something. Pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaasssee do this for me Apple! That or a nice silver would be cool.

    Still waiting on my G5.

but - it's apples style to use the same keyboard/ mouse with the iMac AND the pro line. so the design has to fit to these...

They just changed the keyboard and mouse for the iMac to match it. That's just like how the iBook keyboard is white and the TiBook keyboard is black.

Ugh! Black would be nasty. Evil, kinda.

Remember when the rumor was that we were going to get different colored G3 towers (B/W series) a la the iMac flavors? I remember seeing that someone had done a strawberry G3 tower mockup. It was cool.

The PowerMac will never be made of metal. The only reason the TiBook is metal is to make the casing so thin as to facilitate a 1" thickness. I would look for Apple to continue on the "colorless" trend for a while (i.e. white, grey, "silver", metallic, black accents). As for the colors, Apple's probably saying, "been there, done that."

How about anodized Titanium, the bright magenta color of the heat sinks on Sonnet daughtercards?

My wife tells me that orange is the big color in fashion at the moment. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Actually, a royal blue anodized titanium shell with a chrome apple logo would float my boat pretty well.
