Apple still No. 1 manufacturer in growing US smartphone market

While smartphones sales continue to grow in the U.S., accounting for 56 percent of all cellphone sales in Q3, Apple remained the top individual device maker despite buyers holding out for October's iPhone 4S release.

According to findings released on Tuesday by Nielsen, Apple retained its place as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. in the third quarter with a nearly 30% share, while the overall market continues to shift toward smart devices, reports Fortune.

The Android and iOS mobile platforms dominate the expanding smartphone market with a 71.1% share, holding 42.8% and 28.3% respectively. Nearly half of all mobile users in the U.S. now own a smartphone, with the devices accounting for 56% of handset purchases made during the quarter ending in September.

RIM's BlackBerry platform came in third with 17.8%, and was followed by Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform, HP's Palm/webOS, Symbian and the fledgling Windows Phone.

In the segmented OS marketplace, Apple's third quarter performance was followed by HTC with a 20.3% share. It should be noted, however, that the Chinese manufacturer's slice of the market includes units running not only Android, but also Microsoft's Windows Mobile and the newer Windows Phone platforms.

Blackberry's third place finish was followed by Samsung's various offerings, which garnered the Korean company a 10% market share. Rounding out the top five was Motorola with 10.6%.

App downloads in the third quarter saw Google and Apple enjoying the lion's share of activity, with a combined total of 83% of all downloads made in the past month coming from Android and iOS devices.

The findings point to a download ratio that is disproportionate to its user base, though an obvious lack of apps from RIM and a transitioning Windows mobile platform partially explain the disparity.

Recently, Google revealed that the company "wasn't happy" about the rate of Android app sales, and hinted at upcoming changes that would bring its online store more in line with Apple's.

Android's proliferation in the mobile space is expected to push app downloads past those of iOS, though AppleInsider recently reported that Google's revenue from its app store is grossly outpaced by Apple's model.

I am surprised with this economy. How long can one stay on top? Eventually there comes a point where there is market saturation. 300 plus million people in the us. once Apple makes 300 + million iPhones, then where to go from there? \

Yes, because the U.S. is the entire planet.

Well, actually, the U.S. is close to saturation now. This is where it gets interesting. You either 1. steal customers from your competitors, 2. keep an even keel, or 3. lose customers to your competitors.

My belief... the new v6 iPhone with 4" screen that Apple is going to introduce in 2012 will suck the air from the room. They had best build 7 million for the release week.

On edit... about this economy... retail spending has hit a new high within the last couple of months.

No surprise. Apple has by far the best phone available. I wish there were numbers available as to how many people upgrade to the iPhone from an Android device on a monthly basis

Especially with this economy, smart people are going to buy quality products that last and products where they get more for their money.

Smart person #1 pays 500 for an iPad 2 when it got released. How much is that worth today if they needed to sell it? Hint - They wouldn't be losing a whole lot by selling it if they needed to.

Dumbass person #2 thinks that they're getting a bargain and pays 300-400 for their inferior copycat tablet around the same time that Smart person #1 bought their iPad 2. How much is dumbass person's #2 tablet worth today? Dumbass person ends up losing a whole lot more money than the smart person did.

The fact of the matter is that Apple devices retain their value far longer than anybody else's products. And you know that there is zero chance of the Apple product that you just bought being dumped in a firesale, thereby devaluing your product and making it worthless literally overnight.

Saturation does not mean no more sales though - Apple has done a great job getting customers on a "new phone every 18-24 months" pattern. As long as it retains current users (something it is unmatched at) and steals more every year, market share rises.

His reply is valid. tylerk36's comment of "300+ million" would indicate a reference to the US population, hence Tallest Skil's comment about grow in markets outside the US.

PS: Why are people pointing out he's a mod today? He's not getting paid to help keep spam off the boards so any expectation that he should post a certain way or not at all is silly.

My post stands. His implication is that Apple would be stuck. Never mind the ludicrousness of his post as a whole. There's just way too much incorrect there to address on a point-by-point basis. If you like, I suppose I can parse out all the ways that his post makes absolutely no sense in any context.

The article, and the comment, were about market share in the USA. That's why a (very snarky) comment about how the USA is not the world is out of line.

Maybe I misunderstand what a global MODERATOR is supposed to be doing, but something tells me starting fights with unnecessarily snarky comments isn't it. The rest of us do a great job of filling that role. I would think the mods are there to maintain the peace and civility, or at least not to actively cause it to break down.

Which is exactly what my post says (re: v6 iPhone).

I can't see, though, how everyone can maintain the sales levels we are currently seeing (in the U.S.).

As mentioned... saturation is the time when it gets interesting.

    *sigh*

    Fine, I will.

Yes. However, there also comes a point when things break, get stolen, get thrown away, get sold to places outside the U.S. (Ooh, burn, I brought it up again! What now? ), or get old.

And there need to be replacements. There will always be replacements. And they'll be paid for.

Aside from the complete fallacy that comes from every single man, woman, child, and fetus in the U.S. owning an iPhone (or any one product of any market), what does Apple do from there? They make the next generation of phone and sell another 300 million. It's so absurdly simple to understand that I didn't bother bringing it up the first time. His point is so removed from how the real world operates that it can't possibly be taken as anything but an attempt at humor.

So I ignored the point he was making and offered a workaround.

The article is about Apple still being the number 1 manufacture in the US, but tylerk36 clearly inquired, "once Apple makes 300 + million iPhones, then where to go from there?" There is nothing ambiguous about that query or the what the answer should be.

He's a mod so he has a few extra vBulletin privileges. That doesn't mean he should stop posting or should start acting like Digital Jesus. Who'd want a volunteer for a site they like if they could no longer be themselves?

I would love to know the job description of moderator. Do you have it handy to copy and paste so we could see if your posting today (did someone dent your car today or something) meets the job description.

I didn't see any implication. He said "I am surprised with this economy. How long can one stay on top? Eventually there comes a point where there is market saturation. 300 plus million people in the us. once Apple makes 300 + million iPhones, then where to go from there?" in reply to an article about market share. Your reply was mean spirited and out of line. Frankly if you used that kind of tone to your mother, you'd be liable to get smacked in the face.

I just don't think that's the role of a moderator of a forum. Maybe I'm the crazy one, maybe flying off the handle with a sarcastic snarky remark at a seemingly harmless post is how we want these forums to work, and the standard to which we want moderators to strive. It's one thing if a user does it, and gets his post removed or some other censure. But a moderator? What is a moderator if not someone who keeps the peace?

I think that Global Moderators should be allowed to make snarky comments, just like everybody else does. It says Global Moderator under their name, not Mother Theresa.

What's this about an entire planet? Isn't the outside of the U.S. filled with terrorists, socialists, and foreigners? Oh wait, that's FOXNews talking.

No, but seriously, China is a make-or-break country for Apple. And the Chinese consumers seem to like Apple. Hopefully that can swing the smartphone wars to Apple's favor, worldwide. Someone has to rescue us from Android domination, and it's ain't gonna be Nokia or RIM.

Yes, but he can walk on digital water, turn digital water into digital wine, and tell a joke so funny that even God will never be able to tell one that's funnier.
