How about Hamburger Hamlet in Georgetown off of M street?
</strong><hr></blockquote>
Sadly, the hamburger hamlet down here is gone.
There's one in Bethesda still.
I have very fond memories of drawing on the tablecloth with crayons as a toddler at hamburger hamlet. I also was a hungry little bugger, I ate a whole adult size burger.
Chadwick's in georgetown is fun.
Booeymonger is the greatest sandwich shop ever (multiple locations)
Have a drink at one of the derivative restaurants at the georgetown waterfront. don't stay for food though, it sucks. but the view is money.
Scott: are you talking about the Japan Inn?
PS: if you're here for the holidays, i'll buy you a drink. You know, the whole 'meet your nemesis' thing.
edit: am i some sort of bad washingtonian for never having eaten at a hard times café?
Is the Clerendon Hard Times close to the mall? There's an Apple Store there also, and it's be great if I could go to the store and then get dinner the same night.

Clarendon's just over the river in Virginia.
An easy trip by metro.
Oh ****, I have to buy drinks for John ****ing Kentucky now too, because he fits in that nemesis clause too.
ALTHOUGH Pizzeria Paradisio about a block away from the Dupont Circle Metro stop is the best, BEST BEST! pizza,
oh man, and not only the pizza, the crust is good, everything, i love going there.
oh yeah,
and for some cheap eats, go around tenlytown and you'll find Subway, Popeye's , 7-11, and everyone's favorite: Chipotle <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
The Brickskeller .... it's just off DuPont circle about a block ... something like 3000 different brands of beer IN STOCK .... great place to spend an evening if you're thirsty.
I could get there easy enough, but I can't name any landmarks to help you out ... It's sorta behind Jury's hotel (if thats what its still called) ... but anyone who works in one of the hotels on the circle could tell you how to find it.
You MUST visit the Bricksckeler! Over 600 different beers (served by country, and the menu changes every week) and they server Buffalo meat. A one-of-a-kind place. Location: 23 and P NW.
Thanks guys. I got back late last night. I made it out to both the Apple Stores (both were real busy, Clarendon more so). I was in museums or on tours every day during the day (Holocaust, American History (they have an Apple 1), Air and Space, Capitol, Supreme Court, Mint, etc.), so I ate lunch at food courts every day. One night I went to Tysons and ate there. One night I saw "Capitol Steps" at the Regean Building (if you haven't seen it, GO. It is hilarious!) and saw "Shear Madness" (Just as funny, if not more) another night. The night I went to Clarendon, I went to Hard Times (it's right off the Metro). Pretty good. I'm used to garbage Wendy's chili, so the bowl of almost solid meat took me by suprise. I also had a cold. But it was pretty good, and next time I want to try Chili Mac.
Thanks for the suggestions. I know I didn't take many, but I have them all written down, and will try to go next year when I go back.

No. I only went there once and then only because my wife was meeting freinds. She went to school in that area so she knows about it.

You might want to avoid Ponderosa as well... <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Wasn't planning on going to Ponderosa. I just had a meeting at the one here last week, so it doesn't sound too good right now.
I'm definitely going to try to get to Hard Times. I haven't had any good chili in a long time. Which variety is best?

Texas Style is the best.
Cinncinati Style: too bland.
Veggie: Enough said
Terlingua: Awesome if it's fresh (i.e. the best) but not enough people order it and it tends to sit in the pot too long.
Texas: The best. It's not too spicy by any means, and it never sits in the pot very long.
