But as a parent, aren't you also responsible for their morals -- for what makes them want to go around to a friend's place and look at it? I'm talking about very young children here, not teenagers who have a mind of their own.

Yes, it is not a total solution. I would merely advocate that the parent spend some time with any device they intend to give to their kid, and "vet" it first. If they find it has an unlocked web browser then take it back to the Store and swap it for an iPod Touch.

It has an average of 4/5 stars in Amazon customer reviews. Not spectacular, but pretty good.

What exactly is wrong with some people preferring something cheap to something which is superior but much more expensive?

Since when was the premium market the only market that mattered?

For Apple, it's the only market that matters. When asked about it, Steve Jobs once said that Apple would never ship junk, as that is simply something that goes against what they believe in.

I happen to agree with that, and one of the reasons that I like and buy Apple products is because they don't make junk. Of course there's a market for junk out there, but those people who buy such stuff shouldn't expect any praise from me for their cheap and inferior products, as that goes against my philosophy.

Nothing, if you need an Android-powered cutting board.

If I were working at Taco Bell, I'm pretty sure that I would be an Android user, using one of them free phones that everybody is giving out.

I'd also be praising the Kindle Fire, if I were working at Taco Bell.

If I were half as fanatical as you were, I would be on Android forums trying to spread the Apple gospel. As a matter of fact, I don't give a shit what they talk about on those forums.

find one post where I'm preaching Google or Android using any established talking point such as the much used "open"

    have fun.

And no...I do not view ANYONE as a lesser being simply because they like iOS over whatever...hell iOSis the only other OS I'd use (and do use on my iPad) as far as I can tell and as far as I have touched.

    I'm here...because I enjoy it...and I do read articles too, I just don't comment on everything.

Mac OS news is important to me as I'm in for a new computer and I do not like what I see with Windows 8 and will probably buy an Apple computer.

You're in luck, because the Mac lineup has never been stronger. No matter what you choose, you'll get a nice machine. From the Mac Mini, to the Macbook Air, or the MBP or an iMac or even a Mac Pro, though I'd wait a little bit with getting a Mac Pro, as those haven't been updated in quite a while, and it's best to wait until 2012 when the new ones come out.

I still don't understand the myth that somehow Apple products are more expensive. Anyone that uses or wanted and Android phone did it because they like the phone. Price has nothing to do with the choice.

The iPhone 4 could be had for 99.00, the 3Gs for nothing. I have the 4s and the price falls in line with just about every newly released Android phone I have seen.

Another AI tradition is most on this forum never use the products they bash. Kind of like making a comment about Windows when you have never used a Windows system.

I actually agree with you, as I find that Apple products are more affordable now than they've ever been. They sell their last two OS's for $29, they have a laptop for less than $1000. That was certainly not the case some years ago. And the iPad is a steal at $500. It's even way cheaper than that now since Apple has slashed their refurbished price just recently, if somebody is thrifty.

My children are young but I have a 4 year old that like to print out a picture of a doll. I have to be very sure that safesearch for google is on before I enter that in the image search engine. You don't have to be looking for porn to find it. As for people that say teach you kids. At 6 my son is perfectly capable to pay for one click stuff but not old enough to know what that really means. I don't have a tablet right now but If I buy one it will not be a kindle because of what is said here. Just like I wouldn't give my kid a credit card and say only use if you are in trouble. Teens and maybe even pre-teens can be taught this stuff but no children. They are not tall enough to look at the magazines on the top shelf. They are on the top shelf for a reason (parental control) My visa has a pin - again serves as perental control. We do have to teach are children - but not everything right away. They can be young for a while. Sometimes they might want to watch a movie in the back of the car. It would be great if there was a cheap tablet for it. But I would rather have rather pay more so I can choose what they are going to learn about not have everything exposed.

While I use a MBP when I look at what you can get in an iMac its a great deal no matter what model someone gets.

The only Apple model I feel is a bit overpriced is the MBP 17". I have to admit I was 100% wrong when it came to the iPad. When I got the iPad 2 I found the more I used it the more uses I found for it. I use is so often I pretty much have to charge it every night.

The iPad and more/most importantly the iOS ecosystem is simply amazing...awesome in its most dramatic sense.

Yes, I agree it's a parent's responsibility. But it's also not their *fault necessarily* when the child does something wrong like the charging $5,000 example. And it's often how things are dealt with afterwards that makes the bigger difference and sets the path.

Absolutely. Things are so complicated these days, where a legit 10 year old's plaything has 10 layers of menus and is more complex than anything we had until we were 30 and we don't even want to try to get to bottom of it (though they have no problem navigating it) that we pass the buck a little too early. And what about those who won't swap it for the iPod Touch because the child's begging for the Fire? (Which is cheaper (and bigger) than the Touch, for cryin' out loud!! : ) )

I think Ms. Talty is off base on her blog post. Instead of expressing dismay at what she noticed on the Fire at the point that she did, she should have felt "Whoops. Didn't vet this one as well as I should have", and taken it from there. She seems to be taking herself out of the loop at bit too much, although to be fair we really can't tell from a few quotes taken out the context of her entire blog. She may have just been making an observation and not a complaining rant, which the headline veers us towards.

    I'm shocked!

It sounds like you're using your iPad 2 more than I use mine, and I happen to think that it's great too.

I do indeed remember the things that you wrote about the iPad before, but I'm not going to be a douche and rub it in your face. I'm glad that you like it. I don't need to charge mine every night, but I plug it in anyway, just so that the auto-cloud backup will commence.
