I've actually always found ios' parental filtering to be pitiful as well. All or nothing? Is that the best they can do? They should partner with DNS filtering services to make it easy for parents to selectively filter the web on iOS devices. Would that be so hard? I'm sure the opendns' of the world would love to work with apple on something like that.

Wow... so if you're one of these pathetic parents too lazy to actually parent and instead opt for a digital babysitter then the iPad is the best choice. (Don't worry - just convince yourself you're helping them "get ahead" by spending your money on your children instead of your time)
It's a shame that this thread has gotten so cluttered up with comments by Android fans and people who don't have kids but think they're experts on parenting. Personally, I don't think much of the argument that parents didn't research this product well enough. Where exactly has Amazon made it clear that the default behavior would be for you to purchase whatever you want without needing to enter a password, or that there would be no way to set age restriction limits on movie streaming? IMO, the former is a no-brainer that everyone should reasonably assume that any non-fly-by-night company would do, and the latter is at least a reasonable expectation.
I purchased a Nook Color for my daughter a while back. I was shocked to find out that the default behavior was to allow for book and magazine purchases to be made without needing to re-enter your B&N store password. After using the iPhone and iPod Touch for a long while, I assumed that the Nook would handle this sort of thing the same way as Apple or, more correctly stated, would do what should be universally recognized as how it *ought* to operate (just as I would expect a new car I purchased would have a lock and not allow anyone to get into and start the car without a key). At least I was able to change that, but it sounds like the Fire won't let you require a password to be entered for every purchase. If true, that's completely stupid.

I've been working in computers practically since they first existed and I've never had a job where I had to use Windows. I've had jobs where I was forced to use DOS, but DOS was beautiful and fun before Windows came along.
The suggestion that in order to do "real work" you have to use Windows was never really true even back when everyone was spouting it as dogma. Nowadays, putting forward the idea that children will somehow be handicapped by not knowing about Windows is just ridiculous.
