Meh, after watching the videos, I thought, yeah that's pretty neat. We'll probably see a lot of them around one day -- when they cost less than $500, go twice as fast and twice as far, basically not for another decade at least.
By US law the Segways must be limited to speeds of less than 12 miles per hour or they'd be categorized as vehicles, subject to all the safety equipment required of everyday cars. If mountain bikes average $400 to $600 a piece, I doubt you'll ever see a Segway being sold for $500.
And the "Reverend" Cutler's grasp of politics and the free market system is only surpassed by his ability to spell.....

I don't know about big cities, but it's pretty rare to get pulled over on your bike here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Granted, it's not rare at all to get pulled over in your car BY bike cops!

No, the cops usually don't care. You tend not to get ticketed for jay walking either, but that fact that you don't get ticketed for something doesn't mean it is OK to do it. The laws are in place to make things safer, whether you want to believe that or not. It's kind of scary to see a bike go by you at about 20mph on the sidewalk. People who walk on the sidewalk don't always know what is behind them, and they don't always walk straight, etceteras. It's a bad idea, and there is a reason the law is there; enough peopel got hurt.
Same reason jay walking is illegal; you expect people to cross at crosswalks - that is why we have them. At any rate, I know plenty of people that ride their bikes on the sidewalk. You guys really shouldn't though, but whatever I see plenty of people riding while wearing headphones and no helmet... and I ask myself, "How come these people are taking practically no safety precautions and they never seem to get hit, while I seem to get hit one every 18 months"
Anyhow, just be safe out there. And if you drive, watch out for the cyclists, and just respect the fact that they have as much a right to be in the road as you. Look twice and save a life. What's more important... getting somewhere 30 seconds sooner or making sure you don't kill the guy on the bike? It isn't his/her fault that you're running late
As for my GT, I need to rewrap the bars and purchase a new wheelset. Looking at picking up a set of Mavic Ksyriums in the off season Currently, I'm riding this beauty though...
M3D Jack's Litespeed beats my Yeti in pure droolworthyness. I am humbled! Beats it by nearly $2000 too! I haven't kept up with the components though. Still using '97-'98 Shimano XTR all around except for the cogs/chainrings/cranks/wheelset.

As for the Segway, I think it's damn cool. It's not for things that are walking distance. It's pretty much a vehicle replacement. If I'm going to visit my friend 4 miles away, I'm not going to walk for an hour to get there. I'm not going to ride my bike unless I want to work up a bit of a sweat...a Segway at 13 MPH will get there in a reasonable amount of time.
I exercise enough when I want to exercise. I don't need to force myself to exercise when I'm in the middle of doing other things. most people aren't going to take the Segway out to the driveway to pick up the newspaper or anything.
I will probably have a Segway of some sort within the next few years. ...or a new Ford GT40.
I knew bikes like that were pricey, but not Power Mac pricey! Jeez. You guys must be rollin' in it. I wish I could afford a $2000 bike - though I doubt very much I would be able to lock it up and walk away from it for more than 3 minutes for fear of theft. Back in 99 when the economy was booming and I hade a $30/hr job I could afford one. No longer.
Actually, the bike would cost approximately $7000 and about 3 months to replace. I didn't pay that much for the bike, but if it had to be replaced, that's the amount.
And it's insured, just like all my camera equipment. Speaking of which, the F100 is still running like a champ. I picked up a 50/1.4 AF-D and a 28-120 AF zoom. I love this camera. I'm still going to send you a print, Moogs, I've just gotta get off my ass and remember to mail it out
...actually, from what i've seen of it recently, its just a very expensive coat rack...
as for the segway, i wouldn't buy one. can't carry big cargo, can't have more than one person on it, isn't climate controlled (hey, if i'm gonna plunk down the cash for a vehicle, it better keep me isolated from frozen boston weather), and i don't want to stand for long period of time (my knees would kill me after being stuck in one position forever). its interesting technology, just not really practical in its current form. the only viable market i see for the segway now is as a sort of entertainment/sport/play thingy. it seems that cruise ships are picking them up-- so people can "experience" them.
oh, another interesting new "transportation device", though by no means a "breakthrough" from a technology standpoint, is the <a href="http://www.metropolis.co.jp/tokyo/417/cars_bikes.asp"; target="_blank">Q-car</a>. its a tiny car in japan made by a toy company, and based on a popular toy. and its meant for adults to drive in the city! kawaii desu ne!
