Saw 8 Mile

Just got back from 8 Mile tonight. I was kinda disappointed in the movie. It was very slow in some parts and the whole thing was about free style rap. I would have rather heard some rap with tunes. It was okay, but I don't think it deserves all the hype that it has been getting. If anyone does go see it, expect a lot of thugs to show up. They sure did when my fiance and I were there.

Overall I give it a <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Maybe because all I could think about was my new iBook at home all alone....well acutally he was busy copying all my mp3s over from the iMac.

Seriously, what else would you expect from a movie about eminem?

I expect a lot, since it was directed by Curtis Hanson and also stars Kim Basinger. LA Confidential is one of my favorite movies.

Curtis Hanson and Kim Basinger are not the proverbial 'King Midas'" of the silver screen; You can't always save a bad screenplay.

I don't know why people thought this was going to be good. There was good "buzz" I guess some of you like eminem so you were hoping. To me he's just Vanilla Ice 2.

His songs suck too. His latest ones are "Hey people are taking about me I must be public enemy #1 I'm worse than bin Laden look at me your parents hate me ... blah blah blah" who cares STFU.

I would even prefer Britney's movie.

Popstars in movie's are rare a masterpiece.

One exception is Björk in "Dancer in the dark" !

Did you even see it? It was pretty damn good. Of course Eminem sucks...he's not a full-time film actor, but he's no worse than the model turned actors like Cameron Diaz, Denise Richards...he's probably better (in his debut anyway.)

No, Curtis Hanson can't save every bad screenplay...too bad this one wasn't too bad to begin with.

Considering it's taking a "I hate Eminem so I hate this movie hit," at 76% it's looking pretty fresh to me.

it wasn't too bad either tho... i mean if i had a choice i wouldnt have made it a point to see it... I would rather have just gone when there was nothing better to do....

I am not going to see it, I like eminem, but really, could he have sold out a little more?! maybe i'll see it when it comes out on DVD

on his past cd's you can tell he has become more and more popish and does and says what he needs to do to get ratings and sell albums

His older stuff is alot better, still the same old clean lyrics and flowing rhythm that he has always had but less "**** you for diss'n me and i want to start conflict" type stuff. His infinite CD has some awesome lyrics on it if you never heard it before, you can tell it wasn't professionally mixed but that just adds to hearing who he was before he became popular

You guys all seem like stuck up a-holes. "oh I don't agree with Eminem's music so his movie sucks." 8 Mile KICKED ASS. It was great entertainment. I really loved the part when they were fixin' the car and freestylin' to Sweet Home Alabama. Good stuff.

first i like eminems music, he just really sold out on this one. second, is it really good, i hear people saying it wasn't that great, but yet it got good reviews (most movies get good reviews, i find that there is a 50/50 chance of somone being right on wheather or not i would like a movie, only people o trust are my brothers)

come on though, you gota admit, eminem sold out on this one

It's not that I don't "agree" with his music. I just don't like it. I listen to it and think it's lame and self centered.

I completely agree with Scott here.

I haven't seen it, I don't particularly plan to see it either. Hearing what friends have said about it, seeing the trailers, reading about it in trade publications... It doesn't sound like it is going to be a terribly exciting film.

But this is one man's opinion. I don't much care for Kim Basinger or Curtis Hanson either. So you folks can like the film all you want, and I'm not going to say you're wrong for liking it. That doesn't make this film 'one to remember' though. Apocalypse Now is a film to remember. I don't think '8 Mile' is going to join those ranks though, and I don't think any director/actor combination could make it do so nor would it convince me to "expect a lot" from the movie.

Just a wild guess though, I'm not going to go see the film in any case. If someone paid for my ticket, then sure

I don't see how Eminem sold out with *this* movie. He sold out(1) over 2 years ago by becoming part mainstream MTV pop-culture.

    (1) Where sold out means started making money.

Well I saw it this afternoon. I thought it was pretty good. Just about what I expected.

I think you could say that about all mainstream rap right now. It's all about the pissing contests. However, despite the fact that the content of Eminem's songs does not impress me at all, I think it is obvious that he is a very talented MC. I thought he had a great on-screen presence (I wouldn't call it acting exactly), and I thought the movie was good. Plus, the name calling and "look how big my balls are" raps make more sense in the context of a "battle".

I hadn't even planned on going to see it. But my friends had an extra ticket for midnight Friday, so I decided to go. I am not at all a hip-hop fan, let alone eminem so in me saying that I liked the film is a lot. Facts aside, it brought to light some things perhaps overlooked and I gained some respect for him.

I went in thinking I'd either really like it or really dislike it. Turns out, I was right in the middle. It didn't do much for me.

In fact, I think it was kind of dull and dragged on for WAY too long. As someone who's done a lot of stuff with video and film, I think the movie should have been at MOST half as long as it is. It would have been more concise, interesting, and wouldn't drag on like it does.

My other big comment: it needs more soundtracking. The most interesting parts are when there's music. If there was more music underscoring scenes, and giving a "pulse" to the movie, it would have been much more enjoyable and meaningful.

    My two cents, thanks.

Somebody has low standards. "Great entertainment"? "Fixin' the car and freestylin" ?

Not to be rude, but people like you are the reason 80% of the movies that hit American theatres suck so horribly. Hollywood knows there are millions people out there who require not a good script or good acting or a good plot - just bitchin sound-bites, fast cars (or big tits) and loud music (or choreographed violence). The best movies of course, combine all five of these ingredients. Great stuff!!

I don't think EnimaEm's movie sucks because I dislike his music - it sucks because it has a razor-thin plot, the acting is on par with a LifeTime movie, and there's nothing on screen you can't find in a dozen different MTV videos. It's a friggin 118 minute music video with a few extra lines thrown in so white boys everywhere can talk like Enima every chance they get. Oooo.

    Impressive.

    80% ???

    More like 95%.

    Thank God for smaller theatres.
