I've just bought my first PC; alas who wants to give me a PC

I'm a little embarassed to ask you that, but here it goes.

yeah, you read right. I need a PC.

If some of you remember, I use a bicycle to go to work. Now, with the winter standing in the door, it gets more dangerous for me. Ice, Snow, and all the other stuff.

the thing is that I need to design something which prevents me from falling down from my bicycle if I get on ice, for example.

Now, I need to design that on a 3-D System, because I need to calculate several things (Stress/Strain/Strength), and I can only do that there.

I work with a 3-D App (at work), but I can't work at that Project at work. So I have to do it at home. And I need a PC for that. Virtual PC is unsufficient for a 3-D App like Pro/E is.

Does anyone of you have a PC with 400Mhz min. lying around somewhere, and would be willing to give it to me?

I am willing to pay the shippment, but I'm afraid I can't pay more, because I'm still an apprentice. I get $550 per month, and that barely gets me through.

Please ? pm, email, or post in this thread if you have something for me.

What are you going to put outriggers on? You know the Wright Bothers didn't have a PeeCee and somehow they got a plane to fly.

but what they had was time, which I don't.

either you can help, or you stay away.

But then Wilbur did die as the result of an ice-related injury.

Hmmm.. i don't have a PC to give you, but..

Wouldn't VirtualPC on a recent Mac be about the speed equivalent of a 350-400Mhz PC? Or is it really THAT slow? (I haven't tried it on OS X)

Also you know that you can get bicycle tyre chains, similar to car tyre chains, right? That might save you some trouble..

I find this ironic, you are using Pro/E to make somting that stops you from crashing when Pro/E crashes so much its self.

I don't know for sure, but you might be better off loading a slower PC up with a lot of RAM than just looking for a moderatly fast one.

yeah, on a recent one. but I don't have a recent one. do you?

yeah, but they don't stop me from falling down nor do they help me if there's alot of snow.

    but thanks.

that depends, but it crashes always then when it shouldn't. At work we're using it on NT 4 boxes.

I don't care if it's a superfast 2.2Ghz PC or one with a lot of RAM, but a PC is that what I want.

I do not mean coming here saying "Guys, I need a PC for "free" min. specs are as follows..." I just need a PC which is fast enough to even work with Pro/E, and this is 400Mhz.

I have a 133 in my room that i use to mess around with, but I can't part with that...i have a plethra of PC parts in my basement, I might be able to build you one, but not in the time frame you need...

are you going over top of a bridge or where are you biking?!

    Just Some Ideas :

    hmm...sad.

well, first I have to drive steep up, then down through a village, through a forest with a large curve (sp?) in it, still driving down, through a village (cars!) then it goes flat for some time, trough another village, up & down again, then over a bridge (just a the end of a curve) and finally I'm at work.

for going home it's just the other way around (that hill kills me everytime)

    and thanks for the Ideas <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

i think the segway stuff ist a bit more then how much money he has in mind

are you just trying to build a frame around the bike so that it can't slide out from under you?

i'd say aluminum, that is fairly light, and depending on the kind stronger...i am thinking 5-10 lbs will be added again depending.

i'm not really sure how you could make soemthign that is aesthetically pleasing, but just like a bar to each side of the bike at the front and back with a ski type thign on it to let it slide but stop you from falling would work. You might want to think about it because i dont really see that helping you if you slip you will slide with that and to my knowledge if you slip and the side protector hits and you are on a slant and are jolted tyou will probably slip off the biek and hurt urself...perhaps use my idea but give the rods/poles coming out from each side some give or movement so the hitting jolt isn't so bad

that is almost exactly what I have in mind. don't forget, I'm an Engineer, so I already have made myself thoughts about it.

the need for the PC raises from, let me quote myself, I need to design that on a 3-D System, because I need to calculate several things (Stress/Strain/Strength), and I can only do that there. Do you see? because it is very very very important that the frame won't break if I would fall. Because then I had to walk. and that would be my death. I can't live without my bicycle.

<a href="http://www.digikitten.com/playhouse/files/defiant/liegevelo.jpg"; target="_blank">and for those of you who do not know how my bike looks</a>

haha wow, can't say i've ever seen soemthign lke that before, i imagine i would liek to own one!

If you know how, which i would imagine since its not hard and you are an engineer, but for 550 which i think you said you have, but that is enough to build a PC from parts off ebay and pricewatch...assuming you have a monitor you can use.

how much would it cost me to have a bike like that?!

yeah well.. those $550 is what I get each month. but bills have to be paid first, then food too, etc..

recumbents are usually more expensive, but you get more for the money (like a mac)

    start looking here: <a href="http://www.windcheetah.co.uk/"; target="_blank">1</a> <a href="http://www.optima-cycles.nl/"; target="_blank">2</a> <a href="http://www.audax.demon.co.uk/trikelinks.html"; target="_blank">3</a>

but back on topic. you said something about computers in your basement...how fast ?

not fast enough for you, i will check and see how fast of a processor they can handle, old PC processors are cheap i think...how much ram would you need, i dont kno that they can hold that much

well, RAM is King ! The more the better. at work I run it with something more than 600 MB and a 450Mhz proc. and that runs just fast enough.
