Because they sure as hell weren't from tablet sales, were they?

    Galaxy Tab, anyone?

(The tablet Apple tried to ban, but hardly anybody tried to buy).

I can "state figures" too. Ready? ... Samsung sold nine smartphones last year - nine - just nine - that's it. Now, is it a fact because I stated it?

Uh-huh. You know all those "hundreds of articles" is actually just a handful that get reposted over and over. And the handful of source pieces are guesstimates announcements by analysts who have zero actual factual information on units sold.

    http://www.samsung.com/us/aboutsamsu...erence_eng.pdf

    http://www.samsung.com/us/aboutsamsu...news_seq=20096

Straight from the horses' mouth. Nowhere in the releases do they actually mention how many smartphones they sold. Hell, they don't even mention shipped number. They just lump all their global sales of Android, Bada (of which there were at least 6 million) and Windows phones (I have no idea how many shipped) units into one pile and call them "smartphone units shipped". Then the only thing Samsung actually says is that the number of "shipped" units was up by "approximately 30%" over Q3 2011 - hence the analysts assuming it was 36-ish million. Of course that assumption was based on the 27.8 million units from Q3, although they never actually officially said that (so it can be denied if it becomes a liability issue) and it can only be attributed to a single tweet from a South African office, so it's hardly evidence.

So, you could quote a bunch of "analysts" who know even less than you about the facts, or you could quote Samsung, which goes out of it's way to avoid stating actual numbers of sold units.

And I love this, it's somewhat of a tangent, it's about Galaxy Tab "sales", but it shows their M.O. The article contains quotes from Samsung about how they quoted units shipped, not sold. It's the same tack they take with the "smartphone sales ... erm ... units shipped". In a nutshell, they ship lots of units, but they don't sell many (at least not enough that they'd admit it ).

    Lee Young-hee, Samsung:

"Well, your question was on sell-in and sell-out. As you heard, our sell-in was quite aggressive and this first quarterly result was quite, you know, fourth-quarter unit [figure] was around two million. Then, in terms of sell-out, we also believe it was quite small. We believe, as the introduction of new device, it was required to have consumers invest in the device. So therefore, even though sell-out wasn’t as fast as we expected, we still believe sell-out was quite OK.”

Lol, the number of units they sold was "quite OK" ... although not so 'OK' they they were willing to actually say what the number was. :P

I have two samsung DVD players and a nice 55 inch LED samsung TV. There have been many very dumb things that all these devices have done that have pissed me off. Their ads put me off even more.

Basically, I would say after viewing their ads and using there stuff I am much more likely not to buy Samsung stuff in the future. They are certainly loosing my heart and mind.

Actually, the OS that comes with your Samsung is a fork off of Android 2.2. There's no place to go.

This is Samsungs tactics of keeping those loyal people even more loyal due to your bickering and belittling.

What you people are doing is generating the buzz needed for Samsung and getting the word out.

Specious argument at best. Grasping, more likely.

35 million units sounds about right.

    So for now, Apple leads.

But with a supply chain guru at Apple's helm, Apple's best days might be over. It's hard to imagine a supply chain expert suddenly becoming a visionary, creative genius of the likes of Steve Job.

If the strategy is to lure Apple users to Samsung, it won't work. Apple users report ultra high user satisfaction ratings.

Once you go iPhone you don't go iClone.

But if the strategy is to fool people who don't really care too much about their smartphone as long as it sounds cool in front of like minded friends and appears, from the box, the ads, to be in the same ballpark as an iPhone, well maybe it will.

I only have two Samsung products in my house, a TV and a DVD-HDR. Biggest waste of money ever. Last of their products I EVER buy. Slow, poorly assembled, god awful software. It must have been on special, or I must have been drunk.

kind of a lame first post...not even half as clever as you thought either.

The ad isn't targeting you...it's targeting fence-sitters not fanboys...

And honestly the first ad was cool...but the followup ads are now just retarded...especially that voice text one....because Siri does a hell of a better job than Android Voice actions when it comes to properly recognizing speech...both work great, true, but IMO Siri is a solid step above.

I just bought a cheap knockoff Rolex watch from some shady street vendor in a Hong Kong alley—and two days later it stops ticking.

    I have been Samsunged!

I have never once in my entire adult life overheard anyone in public or private having a conversation about Samsung or Samsung products.

Apple on the other hand is talked about *regularly* by normal average people, and most often it is in praise. I have been sitting on a train listening to people talking about how much they love their iPhone. At restaurants, in the airport, at the office water cooler...

Last Friday on the Jason Ellis show (on Faction, SiriusXM) they had a guest on, a porn star named Joanna Angel. They were snapping pics with their phones, and she said something along the lines of "I hate my phone, it is a piece of s__t Android. I can't wait till I can throw it away and get an iPhone".

The folks on the Jason Ellis show and 95% of their listeners are as far away from the demographic of people who post in this forum as possible - and they talk about the iPhone and iPad several times a week on their popular radio show.

NEVER ONCE have I heard someone in a situation like that talk about a Samsung product.

Sorry Galbi, but you are just way way wrong. There are only a few tech companies that people will talk about in average every day conversation:

Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and *maybe* Nintendo.

No one in the real world gives a crap about Samsung. They sell phones only because they make like 300 different smartphones and they are sold literally everywhere (many models given away free).

It is good to have competition for Apple, I encourage that because it is how things should be. But there is no way that Samsung develops a loyal fanbase. Simply cannot happen with their current business model.

Apple only makes a few products but they make those few products so insanely well that people are GLAD to pay money to buy them.

People love to make fun of Apple "fan boys" but I contend that the Apple "iCult" doesn't exist in a vacuum. Apple has to provide *something* that customers want or the affection for Apple wouldn't exist.

Yes Samsung, you will get me to switch to your phone by bashing the phone I'm currently using. Great idea!

Are these people idiots or what? Now I just hate Samsung, when before I could probably have cared less either way.
