After owning a Android tablet with version 4.0 on it I don't think I can live without a filemanager, MiniSD, a terminal with Python, Ruby, PHP and Pearl.
I'm unable to channel Tim Cook this evening, but I'll hazard a guess that Apple is willing to cede 100% of the market represented by this particular tablet use case. We are still talking about tablets, right?
I agree the iPad will dominate the market and be streets ahead of the competition, that's obvious. What's less obvious is why Apple has been letting it's iPhone market share move away to Android so rapidly. Where is the innovation with the iPhone? Where are the killer specs?
I have to admit I'm amazed, this far down the line, that anyone can make the "But they're beating Apple on features, no doubt market-share will soon follow suit!" argument and keep a straight face.
Sure, "product x has features I want/need that an Apple product does not, therefore is a better choice for me." But "features" as a club to beat Apple's "complacency" is demonstrably foolish. Apple, if it has done nothing else, has proven beyond the slightest shadow of a doubt that huge swaths of the buying public will pay for, and in some cases will pay a premium for, the overall experience.
That includes purchasing, followup support, ease of use, breadth of accessories, ease of updates, availability of updates, durability, software etc. Folks are voting with their wallets. They aren't waiting on Android tablets to stick on more "features", folks will persuaded to buy Android (or Win 8) tablets if and when any of those machines offer something to rival Apples' total experience.
@kotatsu: "Apple claims not to care about specs, but you can be sure a quad core GPU/GPU and high PPI screen will be all over the iPad 3 marketing materials"
You don't seem to be familiar with Apple marketing materials. Apple will mention tech details like that, but in passing, and expressed in friendlier non-tech terms. Flogging technical spec minutiae is precisely what Apple leaves to the competitors ? with great results for Apple.
Which is more then I can say for the majority on this board who's never used any other tablet but the iPad and have concluded that it is superior in every way and have nothing but negative things to say about the competition. Instead of saying oh that's interesting I wish Apple also had that or just showing a general interest to something non Apple.
This is really quite specially, and in its own way, truly spiffy.
I have several operational Newton 2100s, a 2000 upgraded to a 2100, an eMate, a DataRover 840, a BoogieBoard, a BoogieBoard RIP, a Kindle Keyboard, an ASTRAK EZ-Reader Pocket Pro. The only Newton I have not owned is the MP 120; the first tablet I used was the GridPad c.1989. The iPad 3, when it arrives, will be my fourth iPad. You're over a decade late to the party.
I have yet to see an Android device in my local shop which can display to me sufficient incentives to purchase it. If that happens, I shall probably buy it; to date, my cash remains safe.

If you want a high end phone Apple have nothing to offer, and you end up with a Galaxy Nexus or something similar. What will the iPhone's market share be by the time iPhone 5 finally emerges?
What planet do you live on? How's the weather there? Do you not realize Apple sold 37+million iPhones last quarter- and they were SUPPLY CONSTRAINED? What 'killer specs'?? I have both a 4S and a GN. Besides having a bigger screen, there is absolutely nothing in the NG that is superior. Certainly not speed- regardless of what the specs are. Stuttering, etc is not uncommon (iPhone 4S is silky smooth). The camera is a piece of garbage (4S has the best mobile camera I've ever used). The display quality is so-so, even with a higher resolution. Build quality is mediocre. The GPU is vastly INFERIOR to that of the 4S, which smokes it. Apple is doing exactly what it needs to do. The 5 will leapfrog everything else, again, providing the most well-rounded experience. Stop being so petulant and ill-informed.

Wow it's just a phone, you guys really do take this stuff to seriously. Yes the Apple iPhone is the best selling phone of all time but it's not the best. In fact there really isn't a best phone out there each one has it's own strengths and weaknesses
I liked the Galaxy Nexus I don't have one like you because my company issued Galaxy Notes but I did get to have one for a week. In that week I learned that Android 4.0 is now a very good mobile OS and that iOS is looking a little dated in comparison. I'm with a lot of you I really disliked Android 2.3 and any version under. This new one though was completely overhauled from the ground up and what they came up with is simply astonishing. The phones hardware isn't the best on the market but it works well not once did I feel I needed more power. There wasn't any lag that I saw during the time I had it and games like Modern Combat 3 and Shadow gun ran fantastic. The extra pixels on the display made the phone feel more open and not as cramp. Which is something I'm starting to feel with my iPhone, Apple is packing way to much info in such a small screen.
Don't get me wrong I also like my iPhone but it isn't my favorite anymore. I loved iOS for the last two years but the look and feel hasn't changed all the much and frankly I'm getting kind of bored with it. Sure the features have improved and so has the stability but now it seems that Apple is just adding new coats of paint to an old car. Sorry if I'm offending the die hard's.
So my favorite phone right now is my new Nokia 800 which my husband bought me a few weeks back for our anniversary. Windows Mobile 7 is just short of genius. I love it's simplicity, the use of white space, the way the apps seem to be integrated with each other and the speed at which it opens those apps or switches between them. Just today I found a built in feature that I didn't see before, you can take a picture of a document or even the back of a cereal box and it will translate the text for you. Very handy as I live in a country that has 4 primary languages.
The email client is wonderful. I can say now that I actually like IE9, just the mobile version. The office program is hands down the best in the industry bar none. Which means a great replacement when RIM goes under. Microsoft's cloud services gives you 25 GB of storage vs only 5 with Apples offering. Since Microsoft has been doing cloud longer it's services are very good and clever not only on the device but on their internet site. Which is something Apple is severely lacking, good online programs. For example they have a full featured word processor on the their website to edit the files that came off my phone. Basically it's office online, how cool is that. A lot of people were bragging how many people signed up for iCloud on this site, myself included but iCloud is a joke in it's current form. I'm sorry it's true they haven't even scratched the surface if you compare iCloud to what other cloud surface are offering. It's a shame to because I was really looking forward to it. Oh and I love how easy it is share things with people, social networking is literally at the OS's core.
I frigen hated Windows Mobile 6.5 but they have definitely redeemed themselves with this one and the new upcoming version 8 is just going to get better.
Look Apple started it all, their market share shows that people really enjoy the iOS platform. Which means the competition has to work harder and they are, it's really showing. However a lot of you in this forum seem to be really closed minded when it comes to trying new things. There really is a lot of cool phones out there and not everybody can afford a iPhone.
I have a friend who works at a day care center and doesn't make much money. She asked me if I had a good recommendation for a inexpensive smartphone that still had a good browser and a good Facebook app. I said without hesitation the Nokia 701, that's a phone with Symbian Belle on it. Yes Symbian, everyone thinks Symbian is a lost cause and a dying dinosaur. That very well may be but Belle is still the best version of Symbian ever released and the phone has a 8 megapixel camera that will give Apples phones a run for their money. Go check out the phone, for the price it can't be beat. Oh and it just so happens to have the brightest display on the market 1,000 nits twice that of any Apple, Android,WP7, phone on the market and one of most beautiful displays to. Plus NFC thrown in for good measure. Nokia still knows how to build them. You do know that Nokia built the best camera phone ever made, the Nokia N8. I think I'll buy a Nokia 701 as I'm still a fond fan of Symbian to play around with and if anyone else is interested in getting a phone from Europe I would be more then happy to help you. Just leave me a message.
Anyway I just realized this post is huge so I'll just leave you with this. Be a little more opened minded, just because it doesn't have an Apple logo on it doesn't mean it sucks. Oh and if you haven't used it yourself please just don't assume it's crap. Unless it's about the Amazon Kindle Fire, that my friends is the biggest piece of #$%& I have ever used. First time in my life I actually felt angry about a inanimate object.
The difference between the iPad 1 and 2 is so small that I never bothered. The only reason I didn't move away from iOS is the fact that the Transformer Prime is nowhere to be seen in Singapore (except for in the overpriced tourist trap shops) and Asus announced a better version already. Apple better move soon because I've got the funds earmarked already and whomever gets in first gets the cash.

iPad 3 will be a big jump from iPad 1 in any case, I suspect.

Hey, if it ain't got python, I ain't going near it! Hear that Apple????
Comments
What will the iPhone's market share be by the time iPhone 5 finally emerges?
Irrelevant since Apple will still have the lions share of profit for hardware and apps?
If not even more profit?
All of you yammering about marketshare remind me of the underpants gnomes on SouthPark:
Phase One: Collect Marketshare
Phase Two: ??????
Phase Three: Profit!
Yup! How's that Phase two coming?
After owning a Android tablet with version 4.0 on it I don't think I can live without a filemanager, MiniSD, a terminal with Python, Ruby, PHP and Pearl.

Where is the innovation?
Siri.
and highly useful dictation capability.
Retina display.
Gyro.
And it has advances over the iPhone 4
8Mpix low-light camera.
Faster CPU.
Bluetooth 4.0
