SC i wouldn't worry too much... a lot of my friends got deferred on their top choice and got in with regular decision... you should try and do something productive between now and like February to make yourself look a bit more attractive to the school... like volunteer or something and add it to your Curriculum Vitae.

****! You need a CV to get in these days. I thought only PhDs needed that?

well you don't need one, but it is usually a good idea to have one easy way to show what you have done and where you have been...

[quote]wow i must be a retard, i mean it was only PSAT's, and i expect a 1200-1300 on the SAT's but i only got an 1100 on the PSAT's and people are sporting 1300-1400

Now that I look back, I definetely think the SATs are absolutely meaningless and was a total waste of my time. The school I'm in has scores that range from 1100-1600 so obviously other things were looked at for the lower scorers (and many 1600s were denied admission), so don't worry yourself over that stupid test ruled by an evil monopoly [¢ollegeboard]. Some schools realize this and dont even ask for your SAT score (some school in Cali for example, I think); heck, the SAT will be totally different in a few years due to its inability to test you properly.

The AP tests, however, I think are meaningful and show your progression and capability - this I suggest focusing on. They're substantially harder than the SATs of course, and are useful in getting you college credit... (I did do well on the SATs though, so... yeah...)

As for deferences, I'm not sure you should be so hopeful... I heard that at Harvard this year, ~75% early action students were deferred to regular admissions (a very bright friend of mine being one of them), and that's quite some competition. May depend on the school of course... I never did get into the school I was deferred at (MIT), but then again I never expected to

As for the Ivy leagues, I sort of have a bad impression of them now, probably due to all three rejections ( ) and Cornell's sloth... it took them until the end of July to tell me that they couldn't take me off the waitlist, after informing me in March that I was on it (schools tell you in March usually)... The school I go to, Carnegie Mellon, offered me off the waitlist beginning of May and I took it. I mean, c'mon, the end of July is just ridiculous! Even if I did get in, I was already committed to CMU (they did say I was "encouraged" to transfer or whatever). I think this is common among Ivy leagues though, because a friend of mine at CMU had a similar stiuation with Harvard (but got in)... oh well.

Also, for extra-curriculars, my father (who looks at apps for a big university) tells me that they look way more for consistency and focus than the lighter involvement of many activities, essentially quality over quantity, so keep that in mind (I guess that is obvious). I was not invovled in many things in high school, but I was committed and poured a lot of time into a few activities throughout high school that pertained to each other, which I think helped me (actually I had virtually zero involvement in the activities my high school offered).

there's been what? 2 in the last 2 weeks? considering the average age of an AI member I have a feeling a college thread is applicable to a lot more people than most of the other threads in AppleOutsider.

    excellent!

getting into college is a grand festive thing and getting into your first choice must be even better!

more like 3 or 4, and i guess i've never noticed any before now...ever...

oh well. it's really not that big a deal...but i guess it's your time to have your fun. i just hope you realize that this is just the first step among many, so even if you don't get what you want, there are many many more stages to pass before i'd worry too much...

oh and applenut: stop whining, please. i knew many many people who didn't get into stanford who deserved it (myself included). many of these people are smarter than 99.999% of the population in this country, and just because they didn't get into this one school doesn't make them any less qualified. they deal with it and move along cause it's not worth getting worked up over. don't stress yourself out over this. there will be time enough for all that later...

btw, back to the thread at hand. i almost went to trinity to play baseball--great place to go to school. potentially the most beautiful campus in texas. you'll love it.

I also was turned down by my first choice, and I hope that nobody in this situation stays discouraged for long. Wherever you go, college is a community surrounded by far more important things - and it is that which surrounds school that matters, makes the experience.

(Besides, most people with any sense at all soon realize that they'll spend the rest of their lives undoing the damage done by the dominant pedagogy of their college years. I kid you not!)

Life is utterly unpredictable - particularly (hopefully! ) for someone just coming out of high school. I imagined that I was through with school, thankyouverymuch, after getting my degree and finding a job. Totally on a lark, I started checking out schools again, thinking mostly about how nice it would be to live in Europe. I was not serious in the least; I actually bought a car in the interim. When the opportunity became available, however, I felt not a hint of hesitation about living the student life again. Your life can turn on a dime when you are young and unattached - no institution in the world alters that one bit.

And snooty schools are so '80s. You don't really need a monied education to be a crack addict.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

ShawnPatrick, where did/do you go? Just out of curiosity. I am in basically the same setup, honors program at a small LibArts school. I like it, particulalrly being in the small honors group, it's helped me make several very good friends. My advice to anyone heading off to college: get involved in some kind of activity or group that will force you to spend a lot of time with people, it can be easy to hole-up in your room and forget about the rest of the world (especially if you spend lots of time online), but you can make some really great friends if you just make an effort. Anyway, my 2¢.

King's College in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. It's about 20 minutes from my house via I-81 South. I swear it's like being in a different college when you're part of the honors program.

Are there any Canadians, other then myself, applying to University this year?

My gf is applying to stanford and princeton. I think she has a good chance of getting in, as she did very well on teh SATs and SATIIs. She has tonnes of extra curriculars, but you guys are making my confidance in her drop.

let me put it this way: i dont remember the number of incoming freshman to stanford, but the year that i applied there were twice as many applicants w/ 1600s and 4.0+s as those who got in. meaning...there were thousands who had perfect SATs and GPAs who didnt even get in. so what about the less-than-perfects??? well...lets just say you better be able to contribute somewhere else (athletics) if you want a chance...

sorry, but with grade inflation in public schools (makes me sick) and the ease of the SATs, dont expect to get in even if you think you're good...cause there's always someone better...

you're the most conceited bastard here.

it's hilarious... and its only because you follow me around and try to "teach me a lesson" everytime.

everytime i post and then see your name later in the last poster field I say to myself, "oh, here he comes again to try and spank me".

i don't know who a bigger loser is... me or you for taking so much time to criticize me and letting it affect you so much...

so, yes, I find it extremely amusing.

btw, I was not "whining" about Stanford. All i said was I am feeling even more doubtful about my chances since many of my friends who really should have had a great chance at getting admitted under early decision were deferred. kids who got 1500+, 780+ on SAT IIs, 4.0+GPA, Intel Talent Search participants, tons of volunteer work, and who had 4.0GPAs at Stanford this past summer in their summer program.

that's all... i don't really see how that is "whining" but you have always made extremely strict and offbase standards for me in your quest to attempt to belittle me... but in the process you always come off looking like an ass.

and you're always the first to use your age as some sort of basis for superiority yet it is you who always lets a 17 year old get to them.... funny

so, yes, I laugh at how pathetic you are

There's all sorts of random intangibles that go into those college decision processes that you never know who will get in. I know people in my high school who I thought had no shot at getting into some colleges, and they got in, while people who I thought had a fairly high probability of getting into a certain college, and they got rejected. You can only put out what you have, and see which colleges pick you. Just make sure to apply to some safeties, some probables, and some reaches, and more than likely you'll get into somewhere that you'll be happy with.

I'm another one who thinks that the SAT is funny and useless... heck the PSAT is a million times more useful, National Merit scholarships can be quite nice sometimes

no, you are "whining" by constantly bringing up stanford and how it's your dream but yet you are so worried, blah blah blah.

my point is that there are more important things to deal with. it's out of your hands now, so why bother worrying?? if you get in, great. if you don't, oh well. you do the best with the hand you are dealt. some things just aren't meant to be. fretting about it does nothing to improve the situation.

oh, and i pick on you so much cause you remind me of myself at yer age--very ignorant but yet very arrogant at the same time. a lot happens in college that makes u into the person you will always be from that point on...

but...i suppose you will learn...just as i did. that's how life works, n'est pas?
