Ahh...back in Canada again.

My country, 'tis of centuries (uh, make that decades) come and go...

I'm living in France for the moment, and while I've long adored the French culture, people and language, I have to say I've also missed Canada a great deal. At the risk of stereotyping, it's the things which give the French pause: people are shockingly familiar and obsessively, extravagantly polite, everything seems new and clean and spacious to the point of absurdity. This place gleams and everyone smiles all the time. Canadians really are such a happy people; feeling mostly unencumbered (for better and for worse) by history.

The Canadian cinema is barely functional by French standards, however. Going out to the movies, you mostly encounter American fare. Oh well.

And of course, the old AI forums - still standing and jealously guarded by its loyal citizens. A very happy December to all. (Just one quick question: where did all those crazies in 'Fireside Chat' come from? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> )

For that matter, where did 'Fireside Chat' come from??

Cheers,

Mark.

Well, I thought of AI since I'm home, and these forums were an old hangout. I haven't been around much since I shed any responsibility for them (although I see there's a new title next to my name. Thanks to whoever did it. )

It's good to see that this community is thriving; I will feel truly terrible the day the boards are no longer. Too bad that not all the old personalities are still around (I can think of a few in particular who amused me to no end!) Ah, well - such is life...

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Nothing like taking in a Canucks or Oilers game on Sports West (I think?) and watching the goofy beer commercials. "Beer, beer, beer BUBBA a beer, beer beer..."

And don't forget the goofy Canadian Tire animated spots between puck drops! I must say, even Canadian television - while hokey in spots - seems to indicate what you are saying about the general disposition of Canadians. Much more laid back.

If I can get a job offer up there, I'm movin' to Ottawa or maybe east of Vancouver - where I can skate on a pond 5 months a year! How could you not be happy doing that?

You will have to go beyond Hope if you want to skate on any ponds near Vancouver. The lower mainland rarely gets snow (and you don't want to be there if it does because noone knows how to drive in snow.)
