Demand for Apple's iPhone 4S continues to grow 6 months after launch

Consumer interest in the iPhone 4S is even greater now than it was in the midst of the holiday buying season at the end of 2011, according to a new survey.

The new data released by ChangeWave on Wednesday, and summarized by Apple 2.0, shows that 56 percent of polled consumers who plan to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days say they will choose the iPhone 4S. That's up from the 54 percent who planned to buy an iPhone 4S in the previous poll conducted in December.

While Apple gained ground over the last three months, its chief rival, Samsung, held flat, as 13 percent of consumers said they would pick one of its smartphones. Motorola fell by one point, to 6 percent.

In third was HTC, which stayed idle at 3 percent, while Research in Motion's BlackBerry platform managed to grow by a point to 3 percent in the March survey.

Demand for the iPhone 4S in March was the second-highest share ever tracked by ChangeWave. Consumer demand for the iPhone was only higher in a poll conducted last September, when buzz about the iPhone 4S just before it was officially announced reached a fever pitch.

An earlier survey from ChangeWave published in December found that early adopters of the iPhone 4S were nearly universally happy with their purchase, as 96 percent indicated they were satisfied. That number was even greater than iPhone 4 owners, of which 93 percent indicated they were satisfied after that device launched.

The iPhone 4S has been Apple's most successful smartphone yet, leading the company to a record quarter in the holiday of 2011. During that three-months pan, Apple sold 37 million total iPhones, and the high-end iPhone 4S was by far the company's most popular option.

With its ecosystem and vibrant app store, I'm not at all surprised. I have iLife and iWork on my phone. That's awesome!

The September quarter is going to be the challenge for the iPhone though-- better than last year hopefully, but it gives Sammy a chance again.

What horrid news? That Apple could not sell more individual phones compared to free Android crap phones? This is no surprise regardless of which country it is. The one making the money is what's important.

If only Apple released a 4"+ same-case phone this October, that 37m would be pretty much dwarfed.

Considering that in China, Apple is only directly available to about one third of the potential customer base of the three major carriers, and less overall, I think they're doing pretty well. In addition, the least expensive iPhones arent available on these networks just yet, only on one. You have to be careful of what you read, as much of it isn't telling the whole story.

For years, here in the USA, Apple was stuck at a 25% marketshare. Android users were crowing abut that, as though it actually meant something good for them, which it didn't.

But as iPhone's have become available on more carriers here, the marketshare has begun to rise. We'll see what happens in a year, as more people come out of their Android two year contracts, and possibly, T-Mobile gets the phone as well.

Given how far these surveys are from reality, is it really worth reporting? If Apple had 50% of the US market while Samsung had 13%, this would be noteworthy. In reality it seems to point to the fact that consumers would love an iPhone, but SOMETHING makes them buy Samsungs in far larger numbers than those expected.

I hope it's not as good as it gets. Maybe the best of everything out there, but there's a lot more to be got.

It is platform news, and not hardware news.

The bad news is that Android market share more than doubled, while iOS grew only from 4.1% to 5.7%. Android is now chosen over the competition by a more than two-to-one margin. According to the published stats, for every iPhone sold, three people buy a Symbian phone from Nokia. Well over 90% of the total buyers choose to NOT get an iPhone.

None of that might matter, or it might matter a lot over the coming months and years.

It's not a meaningfull stat anyway. Android is available on pretty much all the carriers over there, the three big ones, and the smaller regional ones. But Apple has just been available on one, and now on two. Those are still just a small fraction of the carriers, and misses the biggest one by far. So what should we expect?

The interest in iPhones is much greater than other phones. Even China Mobile has announced that there are over 15 million iPhones on their network, unofficially, even though as with T-Mobile here, where there are over a million I Phone users, there is no 3G available to these phones.

But those numbers come from phones sold elsewhere, or older models, so their numbers don't add to what we see.

If what many suspect, and Apple does move to China Mobile later this year, then those numbers will increase appreciably.

    Those are reasonable points.

There are those that see any loss of market share as horrid news. This story will be rehashed over and over as Apple is losing market share to Android in emerging nations and that will be reason enough to issue a downgrade of Apple stock. However, even as Apple loses market share in China, it will continue to gain profit share in China in the same way it does in other countries. All Apple has to do is maintain some 20% to 30% market share in any country to be profitable and obviously there are analysts that don't quite understand this.

The iPhone clientele has the most money and therefore will continue to support Apple's rich ecosystem. In China, Android's fragmentation will only get worse as more and more companies push out those cheap and varied Android smartphones with many running older versions of Android OS. Android is a broken financial model and that should be very obvious to anyone with half a brain.

Im Ohh SOOOOO glad that im not the only one who sees these conundrum!!!!!

I would RATHER prefer to see which smartphone or platform sold the most in the iPhone price range....!!!! I think THAT will be more telling than anything else!

So what if the $10 android phones sold 50 million units....

Seriously! Do you really think those people ACTUALLY CHOSE an android over an iPhone????

Or is it more LOGICAL and RATIONAL to observe that those smartphone customers CAN'T, as in CANNOT, as in WANTED TO SO BAD BUT economics didnt allow them to afford an iPhone, and therefore were forced to settle for an android?

Id vote for the latter... Because I know for a fact, from other articles (which i couldnt find) that in the $600-$700 smartphone price range.... I think it was Apple with a COMMANDING lead of something ridiculous like 70 or 80 PERCENT of that marketshare!!!

You know... the market share that actually MATTERS... As in the PROFIT market share... where Apple, even in the US, commands something like 60-70 PERCENT of smartphone profits....

Its funny how the android geeks seem to dismiss this simple fact as irrelevant...

And with samsung hoggin the other roughly 20 percent of profits... that leaves about 10-20 percent of smartphone profits to be split up between aan embarrassing 15 or so companies!!!!!

    ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

Yaay Apple is the bestest, yaay we all have to pay almost twice the price then it actually cost to make the thing. Yaay soon Apple will own 80% of the market. Yaay then Apple won't have any reason to make better designs or engineered products because they own most of the market and where else would you go. Yaay, Apple is so great, yaay for monopoly, yaay for oppression , yaay for dictatorship.

A little over the top, yep sure is but so is your silly post.

His post does have some truth to it though. According to a number of surveys taken over time, there are a large number of people who said that they bought a phone other than an iPhone because they couldn't get them on their carrier, and for various reasons couldn't switch. As we see, as iPhones become more easily obtainable, their marketshare rises.

There will be some new big screen 4-core Android phones. Apple needs to improve its specifications in order to compete.
