Hooray for Patricia Heaton...

For those of you who don't recognize the name, she plays the wife on "Everybody Loves Raymond".

Anyway, this is what she did recently:

<a href="http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/entertainment/1042713711271600.xml"; target="_blank">Walks out of American Music Awards</a>

I think that's pretty cool. You never hear about stuff like that anymore and it just struck me as "wow, there's someone with some standards who doesn't wallow in the muck...".

I'm sure she'll be painted by many as some fuddy-duddy prude, and called less-than-nice names.

But here's the thing: in a place like Hollywood, doing what she did exhibited more conviction and, yes, even courage than ANYTHING I've seen from the likes of Penn, Sarandon, Baldwin, etc. over the years. How daring is it for the typical Hollywood type to be seen as anti-Bush or Republican or whatever?

Exactly. It's pretty much expected at this point.

I just thought it was very cool for someone to do that. Reminds me of something my grandmother or Mom might do.

You hardly ever hear about people - especially Hollywood types - doing something like this. I watched a bit of that particular show and it was embarrassing and totally unwatchable, just from a cheesy, low-class standpoint. I probably would've left too.

Heaton is TOTALLY right: it's one thing when it's on MTV or E! at 10 or 11pm at night. But on ABC at 8pm (network and primetime), in the guise of an "awards show" (that families tend to watch together many times).

What WAS Dick Clark thinking? "Hey let's get the most retarded-acting, foul-mouthed people in existence and have them emcee a live, three hour show...it'll be wonderful! What could possibly go wrong?"

Anyway...what do you think about it? Here's what's cool: she simply got up and left. She didn't make a stink, didn't yell or try and shout down others (ahem...) and she just got in her car and went home.

She just didn't appreciate the tone and left. Classy and no fuss or drama (like many others, no doubt, would've done).

She's a babe too, so that's extra cool.

getting up and leaving was well within her rights...not presenting when she said she would could be viewed poorly though...g

ps. people leaving the osbournes will become quite fashionable soon...so i don't think it was a "conservative" statement....the 20 High School students that stood up and walked out of my daughters play at the UNM campus (it was a two day event for all high schools that choose to participate and learn in college workshops) because her play had a brief kiss by two boys, now that was a conservative statement......g

No, I don't think it was a "conservative statement" AT ALL. I'm saying others (many here, of course) will attach that particular label to it all by themselves.

Kinda in a backhanded way, admitting that decency and class is an exclusively "conservative" trait. It's not, of course, but they won't think of that beforehand.

The only reason I mention Penn, Sarandon and Baldwin is that they seem to be often hailed as "outspoken" and "daring" or whatever in their various political and social stances. But in a town like Hollywood, they don't exactly stand out or rock any boats, you know? Doesn't take any special guts to agree with EVERYONE ELSE in town.

Walking out of a major, televised awards show because you think it's degenerated into a low-rent, tacky and vulgar sideshow...THAT'S showing some moxie, in this day and age.

The show still went off without a hitch (her segment didn't fall through or whatever), so there was no harm done whatsoever.

    Here here.

People confuse a belief in the First Amendment with a belief that anything goes and you can't criticize anyone's opinion or aesthetics. We need more people walking out on crap.

So, you predicted that something would happen, it didn't, but you still draw conclusions from it. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Offtopic (and actually the only reason I replied to this thread in the first place ) - did you see the demo of amplitube live at MWSF? Looks like a must-have!

As for predicting something something "that didn't happen, then drawing conclusions" from it, this is a young thread, Mr. Russell.

Give the usual suspects time to get home, eat dinner and chime in.

At least two people here will deride or chastise her for doing nothing more than bailing on a scene she found distasteful.

I've been here long enough to figure THAT out.

(And if they don't, then they're restraining themselves on purpose, just to make me look wrong <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> )

As for Amplitude Live, I've never heard of it. I'll go check and see what it is I guess.

Yeah, I like what she did. I saw the ads for that monstrosity, and I figured it would end up being a fiasco. I hope her comments don't end up hurting anyone associated with her, though.

As for bailing, she's under no moral obligation to go through with it if the show is obviously offensive. She made an agreement to perform in what she could expect would be a reasonable show, and that agreement was moot when it became unreasonable. I'm sure her contract was worded that way, too. The fact that she had the courage and foresight to word the contract that way shows that this isn't something she treats lightly.

Basically it's a software-based guitar amp with lots of different effects and sounds. Just plug the guitar in the mac and use the mac speakers or regular computer speakers. No need to buy an amp.

Another heated rant. Didn't the last topic that started out like this get locked?

Patricia Heaton had a responsibility to present an award at the show. She walked out on that responsibility when she walked out those doors. That is nothing to cheer about. What is admirable though is that she had the sensibility to stand up to tactless hosts. A better idea would have been to walk out after she presented the award. So while I stand by her principles, I have no kind word for her execution.

Patricia Heaton, you've got the right idea though.

No, Shawn...this is not a "heated rant". I'm not angry at all. Or torqued up. I'm praising her and thinking it's cool. I provided the link that tells the entire story from the paper and I give opinions on why I think what she did was kinda nifty.

And I ask others what their thoughts and feelings are on it. And they've chimed in, most seeing it kinda the way I do: she was offended and uncomfortable and the language and tone of a big, public event, so she scooted out. The show didn't come to a big, ugly crashing halt. It's not as though she was scheduled to host the entire damn thing.

Where in it am I "ranting" or going off? What's different about the above than any number of your posts (an observation, a link to fill in the entire story, some opinions, asking others THEIR thoughts on it, stating a belief, etc.).

I think it's a fairly "by-the-book" thread. It's positive in tone (I'm lauding Ms. Heaton for her actions).

Rants tend to be the OTHER way...

This is ranting overtly. I looked beyond that though to the substance of any message you're trying to say and chimed in to what I thought of Patricia Heaton. You might want to comment on that for a change.

One sentence - based completely in fact - out of the entire opening post? That's what you're basing your "heated rant" thing on?

    Are you serious?

You're reaching. You're really, really reaching.

What WAS Mr. Clark thinking by hiring a family KNOWN for their use of profanity and sassy squabbling amongst themselves to host a LIVE, three hour show during network prime time?

THAT'S what I asked, Shawn. That's how I stated it. And I asked again, above. I even read where others are kinda miffed at Clark because of complaints that were called and e-mailed to ABC about the tone of that show.

Mr. Clark probably was thinking about "hipness factor" and ratings more than anything else, and, without thinking too hard, simply thought "yeah, let's get the Osbournes...they're popular right now", without considering that maybe they're not the best people to host a show like this? I mean, aside from the fact that Ozzy is pretty unintelligible when he speaks (which should be somewhat of a factor if you're being asked to emcee a television event), who wants to see a squabbling, surly family up there, when usually just a lone Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Short, Jay Leno or someone of that sort carry the thing.

Don't be such a baiting smartypants. You know that one sentence/question doesn't make this a "heated rant".

How's that? Does that stick to the topic more and address your concerns?

I spent one line on the fact that the post that started this thread included yet another angry rant from you. You over-reacted again because the thought that you could be called on for ranting is unthinkable to you. You've already had one thread closed for doing it. You've been accused at least twice of over-reacting today. Now if you can get past that fact you would see that I had agreed with you on one front. One major front. My differences are in her execution rather than her principle.

    Angry rant?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

The only one turning this into anything remotely angry is SPJ.

No I'm not. I'm calmer than I should be. If you missed the emotion in Pscates post then Safari's text rendering is not up to par. The capital letters tell a big part.

The sentence was clearly a rant and I cleary spent only one line pointing it out.

Walking out beforehand sends a bit of a message though... good for her.

I think she's hot too, BTW.

I agree. I'm assuming she thought that walking out beforehand would make a stronger, bolder statement that her responsibilty as an awards presenter did not include having to put up with ridiculously tactless hosts all evening long. I think it may have been less prudent career wise but an even stronger statement to present the award while making some kind of suggestion that she was not at all pleased with the hosts. There she had the podium to really convey something.
