HD in optical drive bay not recognised

Hi all, this is my first time posting here and I was wondering if anyone could help with a problem I'm having with my early 2008 MacBook Pro. I just upgraded the hard drive to a 128gb SSD and popped the old 250gb SATA hard drive in an optical drive bay caddy. The problem seems to be that the old hard drive isn't recognised - doesn't show up in Finder, Disk Utility or Terminal. Doesn't even show up in System Info. The drive spins up fine (I can hear it). Do I have to do anything to make it show up? I reset the PRAM and that had no effect.

Help!

What optical bay adaptor did you use and did you use the MBP ribbon cables to attach everything? Also, which OS are you running?
