Rumor: iPhoto '12 for Mac coming this summer with features from iOS

A new rumor claims Apple is planning to release iPhoto '12 on the Mac App Store this summer, with the new software bringing some of the features of iPhoto for iOS to the Mac.

The rumor comes from anonymous sources who spoke with the Dutch website Apple Weetjes, which does not have an extensive track record with respect to Apple rumors. It said the new version the photo editing software will be "largely inspired" by the newly released iPhoto for iOS.

The new iPhoto '12 will reportedly allow users to create a photo album and share it via iCloud. This would replace the MobileMe gallery function currently found in iPhoto.

In addition, iPhoto '12 is also rumored to allow users to easily transfer pictures from iOS devices with iPhoto installed. In this way, users could quickly edit and share photos between their Mac and iOS devices.

The report also said that photo retouching in iPhoto '12 for Mac will be "inspired by iOS." It said the new version will be available on OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, but will not run on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

iPhoto for iOS was launched on the App Store in March, and was introduced alongside the third-generation iPad. It was dubbed by Apple as a "reinvention" of the preexisting iPhoto for Mac.

iLife 11

Apple revealed last month that it had sold more than a million copies of iPhoto for iOS in less than 10 days of availability. It is available for $4.99 on the iOS App Store, and is compatible with both the iPhone and iPad.

On the Mac, iPhoto was last updated in October of 2010 along with iMovie and GarageBand in the iLife '11 software suite. All three applications come free with every new Mac, while existing users can purchase the latest versions from the Mac App Store for $14.99 each.

The features they are talking about, I think, are a given for an update. I even think we might find updates to both versions that would allow you to use your iPad or iPhone as a kind of touchscreen for the computer version. So if I want to 'paint' an effect on a photo I could do it on my iPad but it's the photo on the computer being changed. And so on. The only one that I question from their list is the notion of beaming photos from iOS to Mac. We can in effect do that via iCloud already so I'm not certain that Apple will be in a rush to add direct access in a 'wifi sync' kind of way.

What I also question is if this will be a new version of the software. I ask this because it would then require users to buy all over again and I'm not sure that Apple will do that. Especially since they have to buy again just to get the iOS version. There has always been a school of thought that Apple really makes their money on the hardware not the software so I could see them just dropping the numbers and simply having iPhoto for Mac and this is another point release you get for free

Why not just kill OSX all at once?  Why this slow and painful transition to iOS on the desktop?

Hope something here is true. I don't want to have to move to Flickr.

Just to clarify for the people who don't know who you are, that's not what Apple's doing. For heaven's sake.

Why?  Every single version of iLife has always been a paid upgrade for users.  The initial version you get comes included with the hardware, but upgrades to the software, like the OS pretty much have always been paid.

Yes please to this - I also hope that the new iPhoto will be able to less clumsily manage multiple libraries - I'd love to be able to see all my libraries and switch from one to the other without having to restart.

I hope they loose the graphic display of phoney 'albums' as per IOS.

Dead on. The "wifi sync" already exists. And has a name. PhotoStream. Then again, they could pull the beam function to allow users to share that easy too.

I am torn on the paid upgrade. In the MAS, I believe it is just iPhoto - though I could be wrong. That would imply a free upgrade. As you said, not their cash lifeline. Though this could be the first MAS exclusive version, and therefore, be a paid upgrade for everyone, then be free updates in the future.

infraction given.  This post serves nothing but to be an incendiary target.   We value insightful commentary here even if it runs

counter to what Apple fans like but look at your post here and ask yourself "what value did I bring"

I think you'll find the answer too close to zero.

I'm still hoping we'll see new versions of iLife and iWork alongside the new MacBooks, which hopefully won't be too long now.

Yeah, God forbid Apple create some consistency and high level of integration between their OSes. And apprently, this to you and other mindless trolls is called 'killing OSX' even when OSX is getting ADDED features with each release, and is getting more powerful and not less.

Just out of curiosity, are you aware of what Microsoft is doing with Windows 8? You know, the whole massive tiles on a desktop thing?

Presumably Aperture would get similar iCloud based galleries, hopefully with pro templates for business use rather than home style ones. I'd be happy to pay for this if it were reasonable.

I agree with you ... But off topic somewhat ... I'm disappointed the new AI still shows replies to those one has chosen to ignore such as the person in your quote here in my case. It would have been so nice if they had taken what would be a simple step to remove any trace of those you ignore, both their replies and and quotes.

So far, I'm not a fan of Windows 8.  I'll try to keep an open mind, but so far, I think that I will hate it.

IMO, what M$ is doing with the integration of the desktop with their mobile OS is similar to what Apple is doing.  I don't like it in either case, as I am not a fan of either iOS or WinMobile.

ISTM that OSX is an extremely better OS than iOS, and I see no reason to merge the two in any manner.

ISTM that M$ is trying to bolster thier mobile OS by merging the two.  I see no reason for Apple to follow this route, given the success of iOS.

Dumbing down the desktop is no way for 'Apple to proceed, IMO.  Leave good enough alone.

I want to see Apple get away from the mother ship approach with Photos like it did with iTunes Match and work everything out of iCloud.  I should be able to assign photos from various devices to folders that would sync everywhere.

You may not like that the two are becoming closer aligned but I don't see it as 'dumbing down'. IOS is less fully featured, but I don't see that happening with OSX. If the new iPhoto was to become like the IOS version it would in fact become more fully featured.

Seems like they could maybe even take a cue or to from (almost pains me to say)... Adobe.  Would there be a use for using an iPad to control or manipulate photos in the OSX version of iPhoto?

Another idea... a lot of people are taking pictures.  Many of those are bad pictures.  What about integrating lessons into iPhoto much like Garage Band?  How hard would smart technology be that could assess a photo that is imported and give tips to the user on how they could improve the photo?

Finally, not directly related... but I think it is high time that Apple consider including GarageBand, iPhoto, and iMovie with every iPad purchased.  A killer trifecta of content creation apps.

That would be brilliant.  There's many things that could be detected via software and suggestions could be made.

Things like "The backlighting is so strong that the faces are shadowed.  Try retaking with a darker background so the subjects are brighter."  or "you have centered the subject.  Try putting the subject 1/3 of the way into the frame instead for a stronger composition."

I don't know if AI is good enough yet to be of a lot of help, but maybe some basic stuff could be done.

How about "The whole scene is beige.  A brighly colored object could be a focal point"?  or "everything is small.  Try zooming in on some objets, in order to provide a stronger subject and less visual clutter"?  Is that stuff possible yet?

How about the simple ability to email an address book group a MobileMe Gallery???

(or how about a long term replacement for MobileMe Gallery???)

(older people I know love MobileMe Gallery but hate Facebook and the alternatives Apple is pushing.)
