How does it work on the iPad when there's no GPS?

Lack of bus routes could be a major buzzkill. I recently moved to a big city and having Google Maps tell me how the bus works is a life saver.

Google Maps leaves some big shoes to be filled, hopefully Apple can pull it off.

It would seem that IF they can do that, they would have shown it, clearly it's something a lot of folks actually use.

Well its not apple is gonna ban google maps from the app store (I HOPE NOT!!!!)

So it will STILL be up to google to update their iOS app to have all teh features. Lets not act like its apple's fault features in google maps are missing.

So any how you take it, you get the best of both worlds on iOS. Apple maps if you just must use apple products. And Google maps if you just must have street view, bus schedules, offers and all that other stuff google have in their maps.

Hey, can you think of something negative to respond to this now?  :)

I want to see how many levels down we can go with you always finding some crappy thing to say.  It is a game right?

I bet it's plus a thousand points for the person that can find that post of yours where you said something nice, right?

The thing that will go away if we switch to Apple's solution from Google's is street view and if the 3D map can't replace it that's a serious deficit.

Street view is extremely popular and very, very, useful.  All the other features are either replicated or one-upped in Apple's solution but street view is still an unknown or possibly missing entirely.

I'm probably alone, or I'd like to see the data but I never use the street view function on my phone, however I concur it is a very cool function, and would be useful under certain situations, i.e. if I want to know what a place looks like before I get there.  Given that Apple like cool ideas I would be surprised if they didn't have something as good or comparable up their sleeves and they definitely need something to compete with the feature, I just don't think it needs to be another street view.  To be honest I'd value a cool well done 3D view ahead of a photographed street view.  I recognise that Google are always extending street view, even as far as going into museums and into national parks, but to me it seems like a lot of effort being expended into a function that just isn't used all that often, unlike something important like turn-by-turn navigation.

All I am missing for a perfect event is an Apple TV app store and SDK.

I'll bet this will all come about in due course, and can't wait.  I may even buy an Apple TV if they do!

As do I. I can't imagine Apple doing something like that.

I've no idea what you're saying, but if you're insulting me, kindly do it in PMs where it's not off topic.

Agreed: just another icon on the home screen waiting for when I need it's features....

Street View is very nice, but for the times I use it (maybe < 10% of my total mapping time) I know I can still just go to the browser and pull up google maps to check something out - and I will add that it may take awhile, but I suspect street view is a pet project for Apple that will be unveiled in a later release. What we received today was a GREAT transition away from a google dependency....

erm, the cellular iPads have proper GPS chip in them.  Other iPads use WiFi for location (obviously not much good for turn by turn).

Yes I used that feature quite a bit too. If I'm running late I really need to know the bus schedule. Looking on the bright side, Apple can't logically ban Google Maps due to replicating core iOS functionality now can they?

actually i didn't think of that.

They may do what they do to browsers. You can have a maps app, but it MUST use apple maps and just be a skin. If that's the case, google maps is out along with all of its features.

I guess I'm just old school and "2nd house on the right" works for me as opposed to telling people "Hey, bring up google maps" {pause} "Ok, now go to street view" {pause} "Ok, now see that red house on the right that's got that weird flamingo in the front yard?  Yeah, we're the next house after that."

Yes, I added comedic elements there but honestly with GPS being absurdly accurate I really have no need for street view when the GPS can tell me where I am to a few yards.  But, I guess if street view is your navigation of choice hopefully you'll have that option but I'll be really looking forward to apple's solution.

Still an odd question?  Apple to customer, "buy a cellular iPad or use your cellular ready iPhone".

They don't specify that on their website. My question stands until they fix that.
