A USB cable is a very good idea. You know, printing etc.
How is that better then air print??? This IS a portable device. Why tie it down with cables? Why have to go to the room where the printer is located and plug it in?
Looks great actually. Not sure why some people here are bashing it. Does it look similar to an iPad? Sure. But it's a very different machine software-wise, and from the looks of it, it'll be much more capable as a laptop replacement with the versatility of a tablet. That sounds good from where I'm at.
"From the looks of it..."
Exactly... so far all we have are looks.
If I was a betting man I'd put odds that this thing will only be, at best, half of what Ballmer is promising. Maybe one day it will be as promised but by then the rest of the crowd will have surpassed it.
Ballmer is promising the moon in order to delay some of the iPad orders. I'd venture to say that those who wait will be sadly disappointed.
Depending on the specs such as RAM and video chipset, I might have to get this for my wife.
This is closer to what I want from a tablet -- a true replacement for the laptop for my professional needs with an optional keyboard, plus I can use it casually in tablet form for web surfing and movies. I would love to see Apple release a tablet-based Mac that I can throw Xcode on. A thinner laptop (e.g. next-generation MacBook Pro) is not exactly what I am looking for. I want to see a tablet that can serve as a true replacement for the laptop.
Hmmm... USB 2.0, certainly not the latest in tech. That is so like MS to do it only partially right. "VaporMag," is this a hint of something that will also not ever make it to market? The product only weights 1.5 pounds... it that before the batteries are included, or is this a desk unit?
This is the "Pro" model with the tactile keyboard. Easily a replacement for my MacBook Air. It has an i5 Processor and runs both metro and desktop apps, so I can use it as both a laptop and tablet. Best part is, no syncing, ever.
I guess it depends on your requirements but I don't get why anyone would do that? You can buy similar portable keyboards for the iPad. If you want to go Windows wouldn't an Ultrabook be a better option.
I just don't buy into the argument that millions of people will replace their laptop with a tablet. I think they have different uses. I use my iPad primarily as an entertainment device whereas my laptop is for work. If I had to chose one or the other I would stick with the laptop but I think most Apple fans will probably buy both.
The keyboard is slick, but nothing we can't get on an iPad
I think overall it's a nice package...at $500 tops.
Also, this seems to be the very definition of Tim Cook's explanation of compromise when you try to merge a tablet and "PC". Not a negative, but certainly a fact.
I really would rather see MSFT do a proper mobile ecosystem between phone and tablet, and not worry so much about windows desktop integration.
I don't get these events where you show something off with no price or release date. And what about all the Windows tablets/Ultrabooks Intel showed off a couple weeks ago? With this announcement it's like MS is giving a vote of no confidence to all the OEM's.
Not the most flattering photo I bet. Honestly you would think they would get some professional photos done to show on the presentation. I hope it looks better in the flesh.
Sounds awesome here. Barring poor reviews, I'd easily consider this over the new iPads and MacBooks.
Remember, this is a Windows Machine. It doesn't run stable UNIX (Darwin) like iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads, and every Mac. iOS and OS X really do have good reviews.
Windows, somehow, doesn't crash very often, but they're not very many Applications for it. (I'm obviously referring to the new Window 8 ARM version, and I don't think there are very many apps for Windows 8 x86 tablets either.)
I like the fact that thousands of Apps are created everyday for my devices, and a new OS comes every year.
This is the "Pro" model with the tactile keyboard. Easily a replacement for my MacBook Air. It has an i5 Processor and runs both metro and desktop apps, so I can use it as both a laptop and tablet. Best part is, no syncing, ever.
same price, less battery, less memory, more fragile, worse keyboard, worse mouse, worse ecosystem (so far), more heat, smaller screen, no OSX and i could go on and on. so the air is better.
and the iPad is also better as a tablet.
this is the galaxy note of the tablets (compromises). it's up to you to choose, but it will sell.

No, I'm actually typing this on a Macbook Pro. A 2006 one but a Pro nonetheless. My 4S is inches away.

They aren't competing with Apple so much as their very own OEMs.
*confused*

What level of USB does the new iPad have?

Hey, Jay... I bet you work for Microsoft and are trying to balance the negative comments on this this lame. non-existent, product!
I'm grateful for Balmer as CEO... He's done more harm to Microsoft than Apple could ever overtly or covertly produce. Love him!
Price is going to be critical.

can anyone tell me what this does better then an ipad or android tablet, or even the BB playbook, MS late to the dance with nothing new to offer.
Really I there goes 20 minutes of my life ill never get-back.. Ha Ha Ha,
Some press conference, no idea of cost, no idea of when you can buy, no battery life, any 3g or lte

Just think it's getting a raw deal from fanboys. But this is APPLEinsider so it's to be expected.
