Looking outside, and seeing that you're within 20 miles of me...

    i'd say no.

I, however, am obliged to study, because we don't close for anything short of an act of God.

    Caselaw don't study itself.

    it's snowing... a lot

but is 4-7 inches enough to close school? In Michigan, we had 17" of snow fall in one night 2 years ago, and the next morning all the roads were plowed and life went on as normal.

last time they cancelled school for snow here in MN it snowed over 36" in a night in October.

i think they closed it once by accident a few years later when they believed the weathermen that it was going to be the biggest storm of the decade. instead it snowed 3" and was 34 degrees out.

they were so pissed about that they didn't close it when it was -70 below a few days later. jerks. a mile long walk to class at -70? don't think so.

In Texas if it gets to 30 they declare a state emergency and everyone runs inside, cranks up the heaters and puts on every article of clothing they own.

If there's more than 4" then God help us, we may be declaring it one big disaster area.

A lot of small schools in my area (this is rural Iowa, I'm talking around 200 high school students) are closing because half the kids have the flu.

A ton of basketball games and wrestling meets are getting canceled, too.

Alcimedes is exaggerating. It's never gotten to -70 in recent history here in Minnesota, the worst was -60 in Tower, which is quite far north. That same night, the town of Embarrass hit -58. Down in the Twin Cities, though, it only got to something like -30 or maybe -40. Still cold as ass though.

That is, unless he's referring to something that happened before 1990... that's about as far back as my clear memories go.

I can remember three days when school was closed other than the time in 1991. Once in 1994 I think when it got very very cold and windy, once a bit later where they mis-predicted that major storm, and one last year at my school - it snowed really bad one day and schools weren't closed but they probably should have been, so for some reason they closed school the next day even though it wasn't very bad.

What is this snow thing you speak of?

sorry, i've gotten so used to windchill temps that i forget those aren't the real ones.

it should have read -70 windchill. it was probably only -50 real temp.

No school in northern MD. Carroll County is swamped with 6-8 inches The interesting thing is that we haven't had a full week (5 days) of school since before Thanksgiving.
