What do you think are "good" movies?

I'm wondering what you all think are "good" movies; meaning they have a good message, teach a good lesson, or they have something interesting for you to think about.

Here are some of mine:
  • Shawshank Redemption -- Wow! What a story of hope!

  • Truman Show -- This is a thinker. Ethically, how far can you go in the name of reality television?

  • Pleasantville -- A meaningful lesson in what is true, what is right, and how skin color can affect society.

  • Moulin Rouge -- What is love, and how far will you go in the name of it?

  • Groundhog Day -- What a cool concept! What if you could live the exact same day over and over again? What would you do?

  • What About Bob? -- A lesson in tolerance, acceptance of those different from you...and it's another Bill Murray movie.

  • Frisco Kid -- A funny lesson in acceptance of other cultures, what we learn from each other, and how special friendship can be.

  • Field of Dreams -- "Heal his pain"...what a magnificent story.

  • Cast Away -- A touching story on perseverance. The final monologue is great.

  • Pay It Forward -- Makes you think about how different this world could be if we just do a couple of good deeds.

  • Mary Poppins -- A reminder to remember how important it is to love, appreciate, and understand those around us.

What are some of yours? Don't pick them just because they're your all-time favorites, or because they might have great special effects. Pick them because they REALLY speak to you.

5 Least Favorite (I know you didn't ask, oh well, here they are anyway.)

    1. Cast Away - (I mean really, a guy on an island for a 2 hour movie?! At least Island of the Blue Dolphins had a point.)

    2. Star Wars Episode I - was George Lucas really so far out of ideas that he had to make this movie?

    3. Waterworld - come on, do I have to say anything? Plus, it has Kevin Costner in it.

    4. Anything with Bill Murray (except Ghostbusters)

    5. Anything with Kevin Costner (except maybe Field of Dreams)

I was just showing up to reccomend the 5 films (6 if you include the incredible documentary) Kinski & Herzog made. These are tough films though.

Everything Kubrick made is worth watching, and his highlights are some of the best films ever made.

    SatanTango by Bella Tarr

    Safe by Todd Haynes

    Fanny and Alexander by Bergman

Thin Red Line by Mallick (good for the gung ho war lovers)

    Koyaanaasquatsi by Regio

    Heart of Glass by Herzog

    Brazil by Gilliam

    Mephisto

    Medea by Pasollini

    L'Histoire Du Cinema by Godard

    Harold and Maude

    Shoah by Lanzmann

    Any Python film

    Andre Rublev by Tarkovsky

My Dinner with Andre . . . yes its actually pretty great!!

The Red Tapes by Vitto Acconci

    but these are all MASTERPIECES!!!

And I would say that something that makes a great movie is that it stays with you, will challenge you, will make you confront what it is to BE right NOW!! and I mean to MAKE YOU confront it

as well as entertain you by doing so.

    1.The Producers.

LMAO every time. Wilder's never been funnier and Zero Mostel is a treat. BTW how is it Mel Brooks can make films so good (Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles) and then so bad (Spaceballs)?

    2.GoodFellas.

The scene where Liotta leads his date into the club for the first time is masterful. How many wannabe wise guys is this film responsible for?

    3. Wizard of Oz.

This is a magical film which manages to create its alternative world far more successfully than most modern films, even with their special effects.

    4, American Beauty.

    Great acting. Great script.

    5.Gladiator.

Okay im a sucker for sword 'n' sandals.

    6.The Killing Fields.

Moving portrayal of the growth of oppression under the Khymer Rhouge.

Braveheart - yes even though it's not historically correct and too hollywood.. it's still good imo

    more later...

JFK...this movie may be totally inaccurate but it is a movie that inspires people to want to find the truth.

Good Will Hunting...I just thought this movie was an amazing coming of age, acceptance of self movie.

The Exorcist...Scary as hell and it really causes one to question your faith.

Apollo 13...A movie that keeps you on edge even though you know the ending! A terrific story about how man can overcome man.

Jurrassic Park...This movie makes you become a little kid again.

A.I....Not this website, but the one with that little robot kid. I think this movie asks us how far are we going to go with technology, questions morals.[

</strong><hr></blockquote>It's is impossible to describe just what a hunkaCRAP braveheart is: manipulative, innacurate, cliched through-and-through, terrible dialogue, terrible acting, pathetic storyline, bad editing,corn-ball camera work, and worst of all immature in its sentimentalization of heroism . . . . sunsets and somber fanfare garbage

but hey, if you enjoyed it then it does the trick . . . I think it misses out on masterful filmmaking by a galaxy or so . . . so I sure wouldn't call it 'good'

I thought this thread would be about what it is that makes a movie 'good' not just a list of what people think are good movies . . .
