I guess winning the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director doesn't make a movie at least good...oh well.
</strong><hr></blockquote>
Oscars have had nothing to do with the quality of a film for many many years
If that is the measure of what a 'good' film is in America then we are missing something very important about the differnce between entertainment and art
I would hope that todays 'filmmaker's would aim higher than that ultra hunk of trite garbage or that glammy shallow excuse for 'top awards'
no seriously, you didn't like rushmore?! definitely in my top 5 or whatever are The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson are hilarious.</strong><hr></blockquote>

i love that movie, but a lot of my friends (movie snobs) didnt like it, saying it had potential, but that they ruined it. bah...they just love to hate my movies...
oh, and one of them hated it before he even saw it just because it got some bad review online. what an ass. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
Basically, with a movie there's the ability to do a lot with complex visuals, much like the way a painter can produce an intriguing image that is difficult to internalize. Books are far superior media for handling complex propsitional themes. So if a movie doesn't have good visuals, in my opininon it can't be great.

i don't agree. the subtleties are what make a movie great. special effects are great and all, but sometimes the little things are what make a movie stand out...as long as it's done right. and a great dialogue. a corny dialogue can ruin even movies with great special effects, ala star wars 2.
You misunderstand. Visuals mean visuals, not necessariy special effects, and good visuals alone do not make a movie reat, but they have to be there for a movie to be great.
For Example, I did not like American Beauty much at all because I was thoroughly unimpressed with the visuals. Most of it was shot in a handful of really boring sets. Furthermore a good actor can make a scene visually interesting, as is the case with Ace Ventura or The Big Lebowski. (Af course, TBL also has great scene visuals)

ahh...gotcha. i did not like american beauty cause it was boring, and i found the artsy attempt about it to be stupid and overdramatic. and i guess watching it on a 10 hour flight doesn't help either...
Comments
Remember: Look at the message and lesson behind the movie. What has really "spoken" to you?
Gotta disagree, but hey, I thought Safe sucked.
Anyway:
1. Multiple Maniacs
2. The Bad Lieutennant
3. American Beauty
4. Requiem for a Dream
5. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Of course this list could change at any time, but those five films all had an impact on me that as more than just entertainment.
2. MST3K
3. MST3K
5. Any of the MST3K episodes
Need I say more?
