Things we should do in the War on Terror

My grade for the adminstration so far on this issue? B+.

I support many of their actions, especially given the unprecedented nature of what they are doing. I do think there is more that need to be done.

1. At all costs, capture or kill UBL. If it means US ground troop casualties, then so be it. It has to be done. If that wouldn't be giving one's life for one's country, what would be?

2. Demand, absolutely demand that Israel finds a lasting solution to the Palestinian conflict. Set up a Palestinian state...now. Tell Israel..."go to war or don't". Either have a full-out military campaign or withdraw completely. This "in and out" approach with their military is ridiculous. The situation causes anti-Americanism more than people realize.

3. Begin the systematic ending of Islamic schools that preach anti-Americansim...no, anti-Westernsim. Time to cash in some chips with Pakisan and Saudi Arabia. These schools are centers of hatred. End them.

4. Racially profile Arabs. Period. That doesn't mean that we have a WWII Japanese American scare all over again. It means that while all Arabs are NOT terrorists, many terrorists ARE Arabs....in fact, the vast majority are. Many Arab Americans SUPPORT profiling. It must be done. The people out to destroy western civilization as we know it generally look a certain way. It's a fact. That fact has to be used at airports, ports of entry, etc. Time to stop strip searching the new moms with babies and 80 year old grandmothers.

5. End illegal immigration by making border security the military's job. What good is a $400 billion defense budget if we can't secure our borders? This would also help with the war on drugs.

6. Saudi Arabia: After Iraq, it's time for them to pay the piper. It's time to for them to have major human rights reform and make the transition to a democratic government that does not support terror. If they can't, sorry folks, time to leave. The majority of 9/11 hijackers were Saudis. It's time for their government to TOTALLY and COMPLETELY cooperate. They must actively seek to destroy, not contain, terrorists.

7. End all trade and aid to any country caught supporting terrorism in any intentional way. Iran? See ya. Sudan? buh-bye.

8. Organize US muslim leaders. We need public statements by high profile muslim leaders condeming terror.

9. Completely reform the INS. Adopt extremely tough immigration standards. Sadly, it does not seem that much has changed on that front.

10. Increase, yet further, the number of CIA and military operations around the world to hunt and kill terrorists in every corner of the globe.

Other thoughts?

You lost me there. Israel can't have peace when most of the arab world is determined to push the jews into the ocean. You need to "demand" that the arab muslims make peace with the jews.

    please add:

end all militias in the United States.

    profile all ex-service personnel...

ie: timothy mcvie, that maryland/virginia sniper

    federal tracking/registration/fingerprinting of all firearms....

profile all right to life people...they tend to bomb clinics and shoot doctors and bomb gay clubs and such

Wow. Just, wow. The fact that what I posted could cause these types of responses just amazes me. Interesting that few of you seem to have your own ideas, or are able to point out the specific flaws in what I posted. That is except for Scott...I see his point though I'm not sure what else can be done other than setting up statehood.

Please tell me what in my post is unreasonable or extremeist. I knew the profiling thing would be unpopular here...but it is already happening as we speak...just not as a matter of public policy.

    Seriously, what are YOUR thoughts?

I agree with your ideas. People dont seem to be able to differentiate idealism and realism.
  • Reply 11 of 36
simple...if we profile, we do it right...include pro life and ex military...they are the most likely to cause domestic terror if recent history is to be used as an example....you can also target extreme left and right groups and muslims...and forcibly shut down all militias....that would be a realistic start if you want to "win the war on terror"....g

i'm +1 with satchmo's point up there but to shed a bit of light on your second point about isreal...

UN resoultions clearly aren't working so i guess it's up to you no nonsense, hard nosed, democratic(!) supporters of invasion to send your troops to sort out the rest of us that don't live inside your glass house of america. i mean you really have worked out the finer details of a fair and just society with your internal affairs and i agree completely that the world is destined to be a better place to live once bush and his lackeys plans have fully transpired.

the us doesn't have the right to go fuking around with the whole world. we, americans, may not be right about everything relating to world policy. going in and changin their schools would end up slanting their education in our favor, which isn't right. they are sovereign and have the right over their own education systems. i'm more of an isolationist; leave them to their own devices. its those peoples' right, if they so choose, to be antiAmerica (or antiWest). the only bad part is acting on that. crimes should be illegal, not ideas.

It would help if all terrorists and terrorist groups were included in our currently selective "war of terror".

    A sampling:

The Provisional IRA is responsible for more deaths and injuries (in the UK and Europe) than many of the feared Muslim groups. Their fundraising HQ, "NORAID", is ironically in Manhattan, and very much in operation.

The "School of the Americas" recently renamed "The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security

Cooperation" of Fort Benning, Georgia has been training terrorists and Central Anerican death squads for decades. The graduate list reads like a who's who of Central American terrorism, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. And we the US taxpayers shell out some $20 million annually for this abomination.

    <a href="http://www.counterpunch.org/booker0617.html"; target="_blank">http://www.counterpunch.org/booker0617.html</a>;

It would help our credibility if we didn't appoint people with links to terrorist groups to positions of power and authority:

John Negroponte (US Ambassador to the UN) for starters: He was confirmed by the Senate shortly after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, had been the U.S. ambassador in Honduras during the time of the dirty wars in Central America in the 1980s. He was intimately linked with the terrorist activities of Contra guerillas fighting to overthrow the Nicaraguan government and death squads operating within the Honduran military.

Then there's Otto Reich, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs. Reich, a Cuban American, had a key role in the Reagan administration's Iran-Contra scandal. Reich is also accused of helping anti-Castro Cuban Orlando Bosch to come to the U.S. Bosch had been imprisoned in Venezuela for 11 years for his part in the 1976 bombing of a Cuban civilian airliner that killed 73. After arriving in the U.S., Bosch received a presidential pardon from former President George Bush. Jeez....Mr Bush does pick 'em.

Its good for the world to clean its act up. There's everything right in cleaning ours up too....and abandon the godawful duplicity that makes us look like a bunch of jerks.

Wait, you make a list of 10 radical things the government should do in the War on Terror to make sure the world is a safer place but you give a B+ to the current administration?

I agree that we need to capture or kill UBL. I've been hoping they would get him ever since this War on Terror began.

But the thing that concerns me is that they haven't even captured Mullah Omar and they think they can get Hussein within 48 hours of an invasion of Iraq?

Other than that, though, I think that some of the things on the list could actually make things worse.

Trying to force peace between the Palestinians and Israelis isn't going to work unless both sides want to work for it. There are still going to be many problems (and deaths from terrorists) even if the majority of both sides and their governments come to an agreement.

Ending trade to governments suspected of supporting terror could lead to more situations like North Korea and could force us into a military conflict like the one that is going to be coming against Iraq. After all, isn't it a bad idea to impose sanctions on a country to make them your friend?

It's like trying to make an enemy a friend by saying, "If you don't start liking me, I won't give you a cookie."

Ending Islamic schools probably isn't going to work no matter what we do. After all, there are people that hate the West and will preach it until the end of time. It probably won't help matters if we close these schools down without providing some other means of education for these kids. This will most likely be seen as us meddling in affairs of their religion and not help us improve our image/relations.

As for Saudi Arabia, they are never going to pay the piper as long as they are an ally who will sell us oil. It's pretty simple actually. We get oil, we leave them alone. I don't see the current administration doing any thing to the Saudis any time soon.

As for our borders, unless we are going to build walls at our borders, people are going to cross into the US. We can try and increase security but people will get in.

The INS is a joke right now and an embarassment to the country. The problem is that a new organization with equal funding will probably be just as bad, especially in having to keep track of people who are already here. Imagine the nightmares in transitioning the information they have on people here now to an entirely new organization. If anything, we'll see an INS+ but not a new organization, especially now.

Finally, you talk about the US Muslim leaders and how they need to be more vocal in condemning terror. But the truth is, last time I checked there weren't any terrorist attacks coming from American Muslims. Plus how do we know that the US Muslim leaders aren't already saying enough about the subject at religious services? Take the Catholic Church here in New England for example. The leaders of the churches weren't very vocal to the national media about the child abuse scandals, but Priests spoke on the subject during Mass to their own parishes.

I appreciate the fact that you are trying to come up with ways we can win the WOT as quickly and painlessly as possible, but I think that we are walking a very fine line right now as it is, and upsetting the wrong people at the wrong time can only make things worse.
