Why is the Apple Cinema Display sooo thick?

Hello guys!

Passing by an Apple store, I was just wondering why is the Apple cinema display almost as thick as an Imac. I mean, It's just a screen! Why it cannot be as thin as the screen of any Mac book? Even some enormous LED tv are like 1-2 cm thin.

Seriously, what's inside that can justify such a thick stuff? My brain just cannot compute the fact that a screen and a complete all in one desktop (the imac) got almost the same.

Because it isn't just a screen. Also, cooling.

Basically an entire computer minus the CPU, GPU, HDD, and RAM.

Thanks for the quick answer! Still, could you develop a bit more? A computer whithout HDD, CPU, GPU, RAM, it doesn't really sound to me as a computer... What is it that make it as an entire computer then? The ports?

Here is what I found on the apple store:
You get 27 inches of high-resolution screen space, high-quality audio, a FaceTime HD camera, three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 800, and Gigabit Ethernet. All through a single connection. The Thunderbolt Display includes a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter and a MagSafe connector that powers and charges your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.
So it's a screen with audio, camera and ports. Why would it need big fan for cooling? I don't think that any port, even a thunderbolt can reach temperatures like 60-70°C like any gpu, yet the mac book pro manage to have a coolling system with powerful gpu and cpu. There is no fan in tv, so why is the need there?

Also, thanks for your picture. But what I see is that there is a tremendous amount of free space in there. Apple is boasting for his smart use any single inch of space for their laptop, so why not spread all the component on all the surface so that it can be at least as thick as a macbook?

It really looks like apple is just too lazy to make a new design as thin as it should be, so they are basically just selling an Imac without hdd/cpu/gpu/ram in there.

Really, I don't get why it cannot manage to be (at least! ) as thin as mac book.

Because the hardware inside it isn't that thin. Circuit boards can't be made that thin. The depth of the ports isn't that thin. The depth of the plugs isn't that thin. The PSU can't be made that thin.

A laptop display is as thin as it is because it is ONLY the LCD panel and the backlights (on the sides). The Thunderbolt Display can't be that.

Wait, I didn't wrote my sentence correctly.

I didn't mean why it cannot be as thin as the screen panel of the mac book, obviously just because of the ports it can't be... But why it can't be at least as thin as a closed mac book! How can it be justified?

The 2011 mac book pro is 2.41cm (0.95 inch) thick, the retina is 1.8cm (0.71 inch), and the air is 1.7cm (0.68 inch) at his thickest point. They got a screen, many ports, circuit board, plus all the stuff that the Apple display doesn't have. Yet, it is thicker.

Apparently the cinema display is about 1.25 inch, 3 cm (Apple only give the depth size with the stand, which of course should not be considered). The thickest apple laptop is about 30% thinner, the air being almost 50% thinner... including all the stuff that a computer have and that I screen doesn't.
