When did the iPod Touch come out? I'd be claiming the the iPhone was a natural evolution of the iPod touch...
It was announced and released months after during the usually Autumn quarter for new IPods in 2007, month after the iPhone was on the market. I'm sure they could have had it ready before the iPhone because it is less complex but it made sense to keep the iPhone the new hotness.
Looking at this comment thread, I think that Apple supporters are genuinely unaware of how much damage this particular trial is doing to Apple's image - the most important asset the company possesses. On neutral websites, reasonable impartial people seem to be starting to dislike Apple's behaviour.
