Apple sells 1.7 million iPads in China during Q2 to capture 72% of market

Apple dominated the Chinese tablet market during the three-month period ending July, capturing nearly 3 out of every 4 purchases despite not being able to sell its latest iPad in the mainland until the final week of the quarter.

The Cupertino-based iPad maker has never broken down sales of its iOS devices by region due to competitive concerns, leaving analysts and industry watchers to estimate sales on a per-country basis through anecdotal evidence and market research reports published by third parties.

One such firm, China-based Analysys International, reported Wednesday that Chinese consumers combined to purchase 2.34 million tablets during the second quarter, a more than 63% increase from the previous year.

Apple emerged as the dominate force by snagging a whopping 72.66% of those sales, the firm added. Extrapolating that data would bring Apple's total estimated unit sales in the region to roughly 1.7 million, or more than eight times greater than its closest competitor Lenovo, who came in a distant second with a 8.38% share, or approximately 196,000 units.

Rival Samsung fared much worse, coming in fourth with a 3.59% share amounting to just 84,000 tablets. It was edged out by Eben, who took third place with a 3.63% share, or 84,942 units.

Apple's success in the region comes despite not being able to sell its third-generation iPad in mainland China until July 20th -- just days before the end of the second quarter. The launch of the device was held up by a trademark dispute with a local firm called Proview, which ultimately accepted a $60 million settlement to resolve the issue and allow Apple to move forward with the launch.

With its commanding lead in the emerging Chinese tablet market remaining largely unchecked, Apple stands to benefit tremendously from the market opportunity moving forward. Mainland China -- the world's largest country -- is comprised of more than 1.3 billion people, providing ample space for the iPad maker to grow its tablet sales exponentially over the next several years.

Great news! :) Apple is not a company that will stagnate. They are always innovating and improving their product lines. I think back to the overwhelming success of the iPod line and every year they came out with new designs and features. Some mis-steps, to be sure. But overall, can you think of another company that has a 75% market share and doesn't become complacent? Only one, Apple!

The end result is Apple has more money and resources to make even better products for us to enjoy.

The tablet space is China is barely just getting started. 1.7m out of 1.3b population is nothing, but it's great to see Apple dominate out of the gate. To your snarky quote, it's funny the latest IDC numbers aren't on AI this morning....

Interesting. I’d have expected a much higher market share for Fake Apple, Fake Acer, Fake Asus, Fake Lenovo, Fake Samsung, and Fake Motorola.

Hmmm ... the calendar 2Q is from the beginning of April to the end of June not July.  April 1 to June 30 is actually Apple's fiscal 3Q but in any event neither end in July.  July marks the beginning of calender 3Q and Apple's fiscal 4Q.

This should be the adjective dominant  instead of the verb dominate.

1.7 million in a week? With the new iPhone, possibly a 7" iPad, and sales going bonkers in China, Apple is going to have a historic quarter at the end of the year

I have no knowledge of the Chinese market for computers for business and personal use... but I suspect there is much less penetration of Wintel PCs in the consumer space than many other countries.  If true, there will, likely, be a much higher percentage of Chinese consumers who can satisfy their computing needs with a tablet...

I would expect a much higher ration of tablets to traditional pcs in China, than elsewhere...

It really looks good for the iPad in China!

You obviously don't understand the chinese. Though the average chinese don't have the income of average americans, they are much more inclined to spend a higher percentage on the 'best in class' items. If an average person in China wants a tablet they would rather pay a higher price for the best product than buy the cheap knockoff (as long as it is possible).

Which explains why knockoffs and pirated content thrive there more than anywhere else on the face of the planet, of course.

The first half of your post made me think of how much better adapted to the Asian market the iPad is, compared to a keyboard computer. Additionally it is priced much lower than a computer, consumes far less power (in a country that has areas of power outages), Takes up lass space, is far more portable and can take mandarin input easier than a keyboard.

It's as if it were more perfect for Asia than the West.

Ahh, but the counterfeit products are for the export market...

To those who are confused -- there is a thing called the iPad2, you know.

In other news.... the global domination of the iPad seems consistent with the view that Android's lead in "smartphones" might be due to an overly broad definition of the term "smartphone". If we were to break smartphones into "mobile computers with a phone app" vs "enriched feature phones", we might find that Android's marketshare advantage is driven by the second category.

Are you claiming he's joking and that I missed something? The counterfeits stay within the country because they'd be sued into bankruptcy if they left the country.
