The iPad has always received the new line of chips first. The iPhone gets the iPad's chip from earlier in the year.
The A5 was in the iPad 2, was it not? The "X" was a 2x doubling of the RAM and GPU cores because of adding 4x the pixels. The best bet for the this iPhone is the 32nm lithography with dual core GPU unless you can argue as to why it need a 4 core GPU, 45nm build, and where it will get the battery power to last as long or longer than the current iPhone..
I hope these rumors are false cause that looks like the iPhone 4 from a few years ago. I just can't believe Apple spend 2 1/2 years working on something that looks like a stretch out version of the previous model.
Did Tim say that he was doubling down on secrecy or halving it?
I don't recall seeing so much information about a product before a launch without Gizmodo being involved...
He also, curiously, said he would not be cracking down on rumor sites--not that you could win at that. So one would have to assume he meant doubling down on supply chain leaks. Doesn't seem to have much effect. In any case, I'm sure Apple builds plenty of one-off design studies or prototypes and sometimes the rumored parts are from those. I remember the rumor mill saying all through 2011 that Apple was changing the iPhone's size and shape last year and Hard Candy went off and made a batch of cases based on the leaked specs, and got burned when the iPhone 4S was announced. I take all rumors with a grain of salt.
…and Hard Candy went off and made a batch of cases based on the leaked specs, and got burned when the iPhone 4S was announced.
And because of that, I'll feel a little better when we start seeing cases for a 7" iPad show up.
How far in advance of the actual announcement was that, does anyone remember? Because we saw leaked cases for the MacBook Air about a day before its launch that were legitimate.
I don't see an A5X in the iPhone. It doesn't need the graphical HP of the quad cores.
The good thing about the A5 is it's an excellent design with a very good GPU that's only been surpassed by the very latest quad cores (and not by very much to boot). That's also the bad thing about the A5. Since it's so good, Apple can get more mileage out of it and keep using it for another generation of iPhone, which means no new "surprise processor" like the A6.
Apple already has the 32nm A5 in the Apple TV and "new" iPad 2. Smart move to put it into lower volume product while they ramp up production and weed out problems. The iPad 2 with the new A5 already gets anywhere from 15-28% better battery life (depending on task). In the iPad the screen/backlight and processor are the two biggest power users. In an iPhone the processor is the single largest power user. This means the power savings in an iPhone would be even more significant than they are in the iPad 2.
I'm convinced the iPhone will get the 32nm A5, and they will ramp up the clock speed to give you the performance boost. So we'll get both a faster phone and one with a longer battery life.
You could be right, the iPhone doesn't need more power than the iPad has, but it does need better battery capacity. If Apple were to change the processor, it would be for that reason.
And someone here got ridiculed quite a while ago for saying the operating system on the iPad would need to delineate from the phone and iPod at some point...
I'm not saying I completely agree, but if the iPad is going jump ahead consistently because "battery is not as much of an issue", it certainly should evolve faster. So far we have seen faster evolution on the iPad...
My thought is based only on Darwin's Theory so chill out boys!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but there were leaked cases of the iPhone 5 with the tear drop design 1 month and 23 days before the iPhone 4S was announced.

It won't be 45nm, it'll be either 32 or 22. They wuldn't make it have a larger lithography.
I suppose the previous worst kept secret was the iPhone 5 that Apple didn't release last year despite all the similar rumors, blurry pictures, 3D renderings, 3rd party cases, and component shots.
I'll wait until Apple officially announces the new iPhone before making any judgments.

Yep.
iPad: A4
iPhone 4: A4
iPad 2: A5
iPhone 4S: A5.
3rd iPad: A5X
6th iPhone: ___?
I'd imagine A5X unless there's reason to believe a smaller-process, lower power draw A6 is, in fact, possible.
And if the latter, that's just one MORE reason to re-add to our "why it's not the iPhone 5" list.

Good to see the iPhone 5 is still more portable.

I don't see an A6 until the next iPad.
fwiw-
If you are talking about increase of the "area" in term of pixel percentage, then the calculation is:
[(1136*640)/(960*640)]/100 = (1136/960)/100 = 18.33%

That also relied on the June/July release schedule. With the September release, this might change.

But the iPhone 4S came out in October and still got a A5 from the iPad 2.
