In June I broke my phone screen (an Evo 4G I was given when my brother got the iPhone 4S) and despite a 70% chance I won't be able to afford an iPhone 5 I still have held out with a substantially broken screen (the cracks make it so you cannot tell what some letters are) I am still waiting it out for the hope of getting an iPhone 5.
Really though, it isn't a fair fight, Apple has only one phone that is on iOS that is a current model at the time while Samsung has several models on several carriers and has other companies making phones with the same OS as them. I'm not saying comparing them Samsung total sales vs. Apple total sales is fair either...I'm just saying either way it isn't a true reflection of the rivalry. Probably the best way to determine the "winner" would be to compare the profits, since at the end of the day that's who is more successful.
FWIW Gents - you have to keep in mind that not EVERYONE who buys an Apple product is necessarily a fan-user.
For instance, I am sure you guys all like pizza - but you have eaten pizza at Round Table, Little Caesars, etc. You probably have your GO TO pizza place, but are willing to try others.
A hardcore pizza fan would eat at only one place, but casual pizza eaters, will go wherever there is a decent pizza.
Phone users are similar. With the iPhone 3G/S... there really WASN'T any decent alternatives out there. So people bought in. After all, $199+ is a decent price point...
But fast forward a few years, there are A LOT of smartphones out there.
I'm not saying the iPhone 5 will or will not sell, but it's pretty hard to say HOW successful it is.
But from my standpoint, I owned all the iPhones since the original (and paid full price for that one)... iOS is the weakest feature of the iPhone because it still essentially looks the same... and will continue to be that way for years more. That's where I *think* Android's customization may have the upper hand...
The iPhone 5 WILL SELL WELL... but I question, just how well.
2-cents.
that tends to happen when they get it right the first time.
And no Android interface comes close. That's why Samsung previously tried to copy the grid layout with dock verbatim.
Ah, gotta love the "..but iPhone 5 will smash these sIII sales, and samsung will have to stop selling all their phones, and Android is poop, and and and"
Most Deservedly .. . Samsung Galaxy SIII = Easily the best smartphone existent.
... and that's not likely to change anytime soon.

Question, why should this bother anyone other than analysts? So what if the Galaxy S III outsells the iPhone 4S. People like different things. Choice is good.
If I own a BMW 5-Series, why should I care if the Mercedes E-Class outsells it? I already have my car, I'm happy, and it's of no consequence to me.
I was curious why there were no iPhones on display at my local AT&T store and was told they had been removed because they kept getting stolen. When I pointed out that the implication was that the phones actually on display were not worth stealing, the sales guy was not amused.
The S III is a really nice phone. Fantastic screen, very fast and smooth to use, and Ice Cream Sandwich is a huge improvement over the 2.x Android releases. I have an iPhone 4S and I am pretty happy with it. My biggest 2 complaints (small screen and no LTE) will be addressed with the iPhone 5.
The new iPhone will definitely sell like hotcakes and break all previous records. I have to wonder how well the tall and narrow 4" will be received though. Assuming the rumors are true. Apple is very slow to change so I would expect this size screen to be around for a few years. I was definitely hoping for a wider and taller screen at about 4.3" since I think that is the real sweet spot.
I was also hoping we would see a lot more out of iOS 6. Not a whole like to really get excited about. At the very least I was hoping for the ability to change wallpaper for each screen, more info available on the lock screen, Apple inspired widgets(think dashboard), a new app on the homescreen or under the search bar screen called Finder that takes inspiration from OS X for a change. Click that icon and it gives the ability to sort your apps, alphabetically, by size, by date, by kind, and maybe even by label to differentiate games/utilities/music/Video etc... The current GUI works well when you only have about 4 screens with icons but I have 10 screen all occupied and many folders as well. iOS 6 really doesn't help me manage those 10 screens with 160 app icons and folders any better than iOS 3. Or what about an option to enable rearranging apps based on frequent usage. All apps frequently used get moved closer to your homescreen and less used apps get moved further away. iOS is getting a little stale and they need more than an updated Siri, maps, photo stream, and call intercept features to stay current.

It's all fun and games until the next iPhone.
And the Galaxy Series . . . enjoy it while you can in its current form. Apple's court results point to some necessary redesigns Samsung will need to perform.
Apple needs to sue AT&T for gross, willful slander. This is unac-effing-ceptable.
I want to work at Apple Corporate. I so want to work at Apple Corporate. Preferably medium-high up. Walk into an AT&T store, hear this tripe, and then just explode at the guy from across the room, walking ever closer.
Manager comes out, "sir, you're going to have to leave," whip out my Apple Corporate ID, watch his face go white as a sheet.
"We're not done here," I'll say, even if I've no authority to say so, "you won't get away with these lies." Walk out, leaving all other customers wondering what they were lied to about the iPhone, leading them to do research on their own.
Testosterone heavy, angry, vainglorious fantasy. Do you really think Apple would have an exec like this?

The thing is the SIII just launch and the 4s sales have dried down in anticipation of the next iphone. Seriously the SIII better sell more than the 4s at this point. I agreed the SIII is a great phone, I just have too many movies, TV, music and apps invested in itunes to change ecosystem. This is why the next battle will be about ecosystems.

Why are you even on this website?
if that's the case, Sammy should be bragging with actual numbers! what? no actual numbers, just percentage ranges based on previous percentage ranges?

Samsung is bragging because they finally found a copy that works.

On the Apple invites, the shadow of the 12 is a 5...
speculate...

That's probably why I didn't say executive… also, yes. Steve Jobs.
