1992 My Bloody Valentine, audience @ 2000. Noise, pop and psycadelic light show that made drugs unnecessary.

1993 or 1994: Verve and Smashing Pumpkins, audience @ 150: So intense.

1992: Pearl Jam, @ 500. Great positive show. When it still was a great live band. Stage diving. Wrestled the microphone from Eddie Vedder who laughed at it. One moment pogo and the next joint circle dance for half of the audience. A magic evening b/c of a great audience.

1992 or 1993: God Machine at Roskilde Festival. Delivered the tightest show ever.

Jimmy Buffet outdoors on Biscayne Bay in Miami.

Saw it from my dad's boat .... (along with several hundred other boats.)

This was several years ago (late 80's -ish), but I still try to make one of his shows every year or two.

So many great shows, it's hard to narrow it down and Artman, I'm totally jealous.

U2 Madison Square Garden on the Unforgettable Fire Tour. People were still singing "Forty" in Penn Station.

Ramones at Rumrunners on Long Island 1987. My first of about thirteen Ramones shows and you can see me in the video they filmed for "I Wanna Live"

Deborah Harry three nights in a row at the World on Ave. C in Manhattan circa '89. Simply amazing shows and Debbie and Chris invited me and my two best friends, total Blondie fans since we were eight back stage and to the end of tour party. Got to smoke up with Chris. Heaven

Hole The Acadamey NYC. Forget what year it was, but it was the second or third show Hole played after Kurt killed himself. One of the most intense experiences I've ever had. There were people in that crowd that I think wanted to kill Courtney and she had the balls to go through the whole crowd. Francis Bean also made an appearance.

The Smiths 1984 at the Beacon theatre in Manhattan, Meat is Murder Tour. They came out three times for encores and after the house lights finally came on we made them come out once more, the crowd just wouldn't let them leave.

Happy Mondays/Pixies New Ritz Manhattan. Never heard the Happy Mondays before and they wiped the stage with the Pixies. Totally different, mind blowingly good, Pixies were kind of boring.

I'm sure I could go on, but I'll sum up with some recent greats and an honorable mention. Last summer was the best summer for shows since forever. Got to see: The Hives, Queens of The Stone Age (with Dave Grohl), The Who and Reverend Horton Heat with Nashville Pussy.

Oh, and for Anders My Bloody Valentine at the New Ritz Manhattan around '92 or so. I forget the name of the song, hmm...maybe "You Made Me Realise", anyway whatever song it was it had a noise improv in the middle that at the beginning of the tour supposedly lasted for a minute or so. Anyway I saw them last show of the tour and they jammed on the feedback for over a half hour, I actually checked cause I had read before the show that it kept getting longer and longer, I think I actually started hallucinating it was so loud.

That Butthole Surfers show wouldn't have happened to be in San Francisco in 87ish 86-ish (mabuhay gardens I believe) would it? cause that truly was one of the best shows ever!!!!

some of the worst shows ever ... and I mean EVER:

Rush - 83-4ish -boring by the book note for note playing...they suck . . not a spontaneous bone in their bodies . . . are they actually decent musicians?!?! who can tell they might as well have had a tape player on stage . .

the Who - awful boring allday nightmare of a show

Rolling Stones --also the same thing... and expensive too

wow, so many great shows that I cant pick....

    um....

Bob Dylan has always been an amazing show.

U2 in October after September 11 at MSG was perhaps the most moving musical performance I have ever been to. Was pretty powerful, weird being at a rock concert and there not being a dry eye in the place for a 10 minute or so span of time.

The Band at Carnegie Hall. I was very young but I still remember it vaguely.... and just to have seen The Band makes me proud.

The Who at MSG performing Quadrophenia in its entirety. That was awesome

Eric Clapton, lots of shows ( i was named after him, my dad is a clapton freak) but his blues tour after unplugged was reallly good

Gov't Mule at Roseland a couple years ago. Played the most amazing version of Lowspark of the High Heeled Boys.

Stevie Ray Vaughan.... cant remember it at all but my parents took me to a couple of his shows when i was a baby.... damn, wish i could remember :-(

Woodstock '94...... not the main one at Saugerties, NY but at Bethel.... they had a smaller event at the original site. My family used to go up every august for the anniversary weekend and see bands perform but that year was the best.

    Pic of me at Woodstock '94 : <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/applenut/.Pictures/littleeric/littleericwoodstock.jpg"; target="_blank">http://homepage.mac.com/applenut/.Pictures/littleeric/littleericwoodstock.jpg</a>;

    blond kid ;-)

Jonny Lang in 1999 at hammerstein ballroom.... damn, why the hell did he **** up by not releasing an album or toruing extensively in the last 4 years....

Guinness Fleah.... short lived irish music festival..... went a few summers ago to the NYC one... hot as hell....but awesome show with eileen ivers playing the most amazing fiddle I have ever heard

couple shows at BB King's...... BB King, peter frampton, the smithereens.... nice place to see a show

Pearl Jam... 3 shows in a row in 2000 at Jones beach....always great.

Dave Matthews...seen them 12 times but havent gone to a show in a year or two because they just are not the same.... remember seeing them back in 1996..... they were great....ruined now... bleh

Phil Lesh and Friends...... Warren haynes and Derek Trucks....cant beat it.... ironically they both play(ed) with the Allman Brothers when I saw them too...

The Who up at the colliseum up in Portland. 1976 ( still with Keith Moon ). Or Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock ( just two pianos on stage ) at what used to be the Paramount up in portland in 1978. Maybe Yes that same year. It's a toss up.

Super karate etc- thanks - yours is my favorite name ever !

Artman -wow CBGB's, Ramones,1976- you win

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

i agree! (on both counts) no one can beat ramones in 76 @ cbgb's unless someone saw the british shows they did in england that inspired johnny rotten, joe strummer et al.

I really should thank my sisiter. She and her boyfriend then invited me (CBGB's allowed teens if they were with adults...ah, the seventies). From about 12-16 I was a total classic rock freak. But after that show it all changed.

After posting this topic I pulled out my ticket collection. Have most of the shows...

    Kiss - 1976

    Black Sabbath - 1976

    The Ramones - 1979

(Rock & Roll High Shcool & the Ramones!)

    Blondie - 1979

    The Police - 1979

    The Clash - 1980

    Iggy Pop - 1980

    Adam & the Ants - 1981

    David Bowie - 1983

    Serious Moonlight Tour...

that was a great date concert...

Plus many others that were just a rubber stamp on the fist or lost tickets...Bruce Springstein, B-52's, Dead Boys, Lene Lovich, Elvis Costello, The Cramps, Stray Cats, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Echo & the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Fear, Black Flag, Plasmatics, Minutemen, Husker Du, Johnny Thunders, Lou Reed and all the numerous local bands that rose or fell...lots of great memories.

I couldn't really pin many down as the best...they all have that electricity of a live show. We all need that mass excitement/acceptance together with other people.

And there are a lot of ones mentioned here that I wish I have seen. Maybe sometime... <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

Dude, I saw Social D and No Doubt at USC Spring Fest in about 1993 and while ND were fine (it was before the release of Tragic Kingdom) Social D were so bad. They were absolute crap. Could never stand their records, either.

Must have been awesome to have seen the Kinks and Echo!</strong><hr></blockquote>

to each their own, just like you couldn't pay me to see no doubt. i saw social d for first time in like 10 years, around 3-5 months ago. they sounded great to me, but then again i'm really into johny cash and rockabilie.

The best show I've ever seen was the Deftones (2000) in Sacramento (their hometown). After putting up an absolutely amazing show, everyone in the crowd started chanting "deftones! deftones! deftones!" and they came back out and played another 5 or 6 songs or so.

Same tour I think, but I saw them at the Vic in Chicago. Absolutely the best band of the 80's, and live they proved it. Paul Leary is such an underrated guitarist, and Gibby isn't human. By the end of the show he was pouring lighter fluid all over a symbol he'd taken from the drum kit, lighting it on fire and smashing it with a stick. I was almost getting burned in the front row.

At the time I saw Slayer (embarassed to admit it) when I was in high school, I had never seen anything like it. It was at a place with metal folding chairs and by the end of the show there were about a half dozen areas in the crowd at least 20 feet in diameter that were trampled mosh pits. People were moshing on broken, smashed metal chairs. Oh, and throwing them everywhere. Insane.

Another actual musical highlight for my concert career was actually seeing Tom Waits live. That guy never tours and the show was absolutely incredible.

Current touring artists: Johnny Dowd. If he passes through your town (it'll be in a little honky tonk whiskey joint) see the show. There still is life in the modern music scene.

like: the Minutement . . (I had a chance to see them with Husker Du and the Meatpuppets . . but got caught in a stupid ciggarettes and coffee conversation unstead (back then it was all berets and smoky cafes)) DBoone died a year later and the whole scene changed.

Also especially jealous of seeing Ozzy era BSabbath . . . I saw them with Ronnie James Dio and it was pretty lame . .

did see teh DKs adn Black Flag and the Circle Jerks and others though . . . but they were just ok...

Hey did you by any chance see (or hear) the Dream Syndicate? or RainParade?

    great bands from that era

and what about the Birthday Party? anybody ever see them live?

i have all my stubs somewhere, i wish you hadn't brought stubs up cause now i'm going to tear this place apart looking......

my first show ever was clapton (461 ocean blvd. 1974?) at the scott county fairgrounds in davenport iowa. (foghat! opened.) back then you got really weird combinations as acts weren't "packaged" like they are now. promoters just got bands that were available and hopefully shared a similar fan base, but it lead to some interesting match-ups.)

anyway there were drugs everywhere and girls would just come up to guys and start making out, and cops everywhere arresting and beating up everyone that looked at 'em sideways.

my second was that huge leon russell review that toured the same year, dig this line-up: (it WAS a package as it was all groups from leon's label) j.j. cale (the guy who wrote after midnight and cocaine) THE GAP BAND, freddie king, (who was awesome!) and leon. leons rhythm section was the guys who were in derek & the dominoes, carl radle and jim gordon.

now, i have stubs to find....

How the hell did this thread slip under my radar. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised by the impeccable musical taste of the Mac crowd.

best gigs, in no particular blah, blah, blah

BBC music city, in a split venue got to hear but not see Oasis playing third on a bill just before their first single came out, then went to see Pulp supporting The Inspiral Carpets.

Saw Oasis play 2 gigs 2 nights in a row with less than 100 people at each just after Supersonic was released. Still got a bottle of becks signed by Noel somewhere (bit embarrasing <img src="embarrassed.gif" border="0"> )

Lambchop quartet playing in a tiny converted church with most of the audience sitting in pews.

The Flaming lips are always good.

Belle & Sebastian at Glasgow Uni union, they played a cover of Witchita Lineman (my favourite song ever) after I shouted it out as a joke request because the japanese tourist girls next to me *did not stop* shouting for their favourite songs. Supported by Eugene Kelly on solo guitar.

Super Furry Animals, both times that they toured with the Quadraphonic Sound System they borrowed from Pink Floyd.

Brian Wilson last year at the armadillo.

Helped out at a gig by Bernard "pretty" Purdie, the most recorded drummer in the world(!). He made sounds that you just wouldn't believe possible.

Did anybody see Brian Wilson in the queen's concert?

He looked absolutely, and I mean absolutely freaky: like a wax-museum version of Al Gore on Saturday Night Live!!!!!!!

I couldn't help but laugh everytime the camera showed him!!!!
