Delta, Sheraton, Ticketmaster add support for Passbook in iOS 6

Ahead of next week's launch of iOS 6, three more major companies have officially added their support for Apple's new Passbook feature for iPhone: Delta Airlines, Ticketmaster, and Starwood Hotels, owner of Sheraton.

Passbook 1

The three companies were not shown in previous promotional material for Passbook, but appeared in the application in an onstage demo at Apple's iPhone 5 unveiling on Wednesday. iOS chief Scott Forstall revealed their participation as he demonstrated how the new Passbook application in iOS 6 works.

"Passbook is the best way to collect all of your passes in one place," Forstall said, showing off movie tickets from Fandango, a Delta boarding pass, a coupon for Target, a store card with remaining balance from Starbucks, and a concert ticket from Ticketmaster.

Delta's involvement with Passbook confirms a rumor from last week that suggested the airline company would join American Airlines and United Airlines in supporting the new digital wallet and ticketing service of iOS 6. But Wednesday's presentation was the first word of Ticketmaster and Starwood also participating.

When Passbook was unveiled in June, the application was also shown to support Amtrak, W Hotels, United Airlines, and the Apple Store. A full list of companies that support Passbook has not yet been detailed.

In his demonstration, Forstall accessed a ticket for a baseball game he had already attended. By deleting the ticket, an animation played showing the digital ticket running through a paper shredder, which drew applause from the audience at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

"One of the really cool things about Passbook is it integrates with the lock screen," Forstall explained. So if I have my phone locked and in my pocket and I get to the airport, my boarding pass already appears on the lock screen, I slide across, it brings up my boarding pass, I scan it and get on the plane. It's that simple."

New passes will be available to download through the App Store when Passbook launches with iOS 6 to the public next Wednesday.

This is exactly what I'd like to know.  I really expected more information on this at the presentation.  It sort of makes me think Apple doesn't have many partners yet

I can't wait for the commercials for this feature... I predict some really clever uses.

Is there anyway Apple could provide a POS system using an iPad's camera system or a separate 3D barcode scanner along with the Passbook app on an iPhone, providing current banking information, in place of a credit card or NFC system? There really isn't much difference between scanning a paid ticket and a QR-code representation of my bank account balance.

Of course, Apple could always open up it's own banking system and do away with traditional credit cards (one less thing to carry and lose) but why worry about those hassles.

Delta has had all the features and a lot more in their own Delta App. I've used it for years. Used it on my old dumb phone too actually. The Delta app allows you to change seats while waiting at the gate. It's pretty great. Try it out if you haven't already. I'm assuming the QR code on the Delta app is identical to the QR code on the Passbook. It'd be interesting to see if Apple allows more flexibility like seat changes and real time flight info in Passbook.

Report back. I'd love to know if Delta's support for this is ready to go and if so, how well it performs.

    Yeah, that would be cool.

    NFC vs. Passbook.

Apple can adopt whatever standard, and industries will support it. The Apple Influence.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't considering the Delta app has done it for years now. I haven't printed a paper boarding pass for at least a year now.

Starbucks, Delta, United and AA already supported this in their own respective apps. I want to see a company that doesn't already have barcode scanners in place adopt it. Then you can call it the apple influence. Right now its the exact same thing you can do with an android but in one place, which by itself it nice. But certainly little to no Apple influence.

How does TSA handle your situation going through security? They're really adament at most airports that you offer the physical pass to them for review...

Under what, if any, conditions does Apple adopt NFC?

When Apple sneezes, everyone rushes for a Kleenex.

The last time I used it they scanned the phone and handed me a plastic thingy with a number on it to carry through the rest of the checkpoint

They have you scan it at a barcode scanner next to the TSA agent. It's a 50/50 shot if they check my ID. Kinda scary actually. Clearly they are not accustomed to seeing these yet. That is why it only works at certain airports. Atlanta, Detroit and LGA are the only ones I know 100% to accept them.

What airport was the plastic thingy? I've never gotten one. I like the idea. I have always gotten strange looks from the metal detector guy when I say my boarding pass is electronic and on my phone. I don't travel all that often tho.

While I utterly despise Ticket Master (why do I pay a "convenience fee" when I print my own ticket, using my own printer?), having them integrated into this will be useful, since I attend a lot of sporting events.

It'll be interesting to see how much extra they charge you to use this feature however......

I'm still confused about how passbook works.  When I open it on my phone it shows what it can do with a link to the app store on the bottom.. and when I go to the app store there isn't anything there..
