They aren't too bad, apart from the minor hiccup with "The Northern Road" which continues on as a main road off the left of the map and doesn't turn right into a small dead end side street.

The time was right. Waiting 9 months would have been pointless.

This what pundits are saying that the maps being an integral part of the OS,  it needs to coincide with the major OS release which is why Apple released it now, but what is to become of the earlier models of iPhones that cannot run iOS 6? Surely Apple is going to continue to pay the license fee to Google to keep those running. That is if they ever paid a fee to begin with which we don't know.

Hey, maybe we'll see 5.1.2, 4.2.2, and 3.1.4 after all. image

Though I wouldn't be surprised at all if I opened my Maps app on my iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad the day after the deal expires and saw something like this…

Yeah but when Steve was there, the word 'flaw' would cause heads to roll.  Apple has set the bar so high for QA that they are now taking it from all sides because of the numerous issues with iPhone 5.   Purple lens flare, Maps, Scratches, Wifi issues, overage charges, and no simultaneous data/voice on CDMA networks in the US.   These are things that people using Apple products are not used to seeing.

When a company projects the image of perfection, people expect it.  If that company fails, well they are going to take a lot of flak for lying.    They are just like every other big company out there except they happen to be the biggest company in the world (not sure with the latest stock adjustments) and they have a boatload of cash.  They make some pretty darn good products but they are not perfect and those on this board who continue to project that image, you are only hurting the brand because you exemplify everything that anti-Apple people believe Apple enthusiasts to be (snotty, arrogant, ignorant and elitist).

I've been reading these boards for a while (and have been pretty quiet) and I see some pretty even keeled comments once in a while but there are some extremely loud people here who are not doing Apple any favours by saying nasty comments.  You think you are better than than the Rimmers, Phandroids and WP 'followers'?  Prove it by being polite, open minded and calling others out for giving this board a bad name.  If you have ever been on an Android forum, you will see that when their company messes up, they hold them accountable and hold their feet to the fire (see the recent updatemymoto campaign for an example) .  We should be peeved at the poor implementation of Maps and pressure Apple to do something about it.  What do we do instead?  Look to other map apps and point out their errors and faults.

    Does any of this resonate?

We are. It's not the end of the pants-crapping world. They provided a means by which to let us help fix the problem. Don't use it if you don't want to. Story's over.

We point out the faults in the other systems because they magically get a pass for failing even more stupendously than Apple has, and that's wrong.

Yeah that works. Just kill the resale market for your phones and tablets that has added considerably to your market share. Everyone needs to upgrade to the latest hardware, no more hand me downs, thats the new law.

From what I am seeing Apple maps seems to be pretty OK for the US, with only the transit information and the shops/businesses information a little lacking. But that should get addressed very soon.

Where apple maps really fall short is outside the US and China. I live in India, and here the maps are no comparison to what was offered with google maps. I wanted to send problem reports to apple from my iPad-2 and did not know where to start. My hometown (a top-30 city in india) has about five named streets on apple maps. Most of the smaller streets are missing. Google maps on the other hand even has ATMs and most stores on it. With apple probably focusing on US and Europe (and even Tim Cook saying India is only of medium term importance to Apple), I don't see how I can recommend any iOS device to anybody here for quite sometime.

Google has always been a more Global company than apple. Apple is only now, over the last 3-4 of years focusing outside the US (and to some extent Europe). I think that is their problem.

Yeah I just downgraded a MBP to SL because I'm not allowed to reformat the HD to a clean copy of Lion to give the computer to my bookkeeper. SL is the the last transferable OS for that machine. It sucks because I was not able to patch it to current without registering it to my Apple ID. I can only pass it to her with instructions on how to upgrade it.

Why do you (AI authors) keep showing the University of Minnesota stadium with these stories? It is actually "TCF Bank Stadium". I checked Google and a Gopher Alum that I work with...

Oh, please shut the **** up. I'm sorry, but your trolling on this subject is what has gotten old, a long time ago. Also, I'm calling you out on your horse-shit. Nobody who actually owns an iPhone 4S would actually call it an 'iPhone 4GS'. Since you do nothing on these boards than bash the hell out of Apple. on any and every subject imaginable, I very much doubt you own an iPhone or give a shit about the company. Who's going to hold them 'accountable'? You? Please, do, and spare us from your future horse-shit. Do you have nothing else happening in your life, than accumulate thousands of posts rambling about a maps app that I doubt you've even used or own? Apple is ADVERTISING alternate maps app in the store, the reason this was pulled was for API violations, related to GOOGLE, not to 'take away your freedom'. Get the **** over yourself. You're a liar and a troll.

Maps by Apple is not as bad as the pundits made it out to be. Try it before commenting.

Comparing the issues with other maps is good and Apple knew the issues and they are doing their best to correct the issues.

So far I have not driven off the cliff yet or into a melted bridge.

Well there's the problem: repeating the same old 'barrage of negative comments' line will bring a boatload of page hits to complain about it.

Hey Apple! If you release a Maps app for OS X you will get more bug reports. Thousands more.

You have found that Google has bad coverage for this particular region in Australia where places are very recent. Wow.

There are houses only on Moffat St and Bond St there. How lame.

edit : and what about the streets that are missing on the left half side of the image? What about bus indications? What about smaller roads?

I just asked for an update on the Google map.

I have to admit, I'm amazed at the speed of their updates!

So now the google map for that area is officially better.

So how did it get past Apple's renowned vetting procedure?

Strange that Google Maps showed me all those street names when I did the search...Maybe Google hates Australians?
