WASHINGTON (AP) - House cafeterias will be serving fries with a side order of patriotism Tuesday with a decision by GOP lawmakers to replace the "French" cuisine with "freedom fries."

now they can finally justify renaming those damn hard-to-pronounce "hors d'ouvres" into a proper americanized "WussySnaks"

Beaujolais Nouveau will become - plonk

Hollandaise Sauce will become - Velveeta

and the next thing you'll do is to blow up the Liberty Statue, because as you know, the French gave it to you.

    <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" /> some americans... would be better dead.

Anybody seen the Hardee's commercial where the fast food chain basically calls France a "big chicken?"

"In the Battle of Waterloo, the French surrendered.

In the Franco-Prussian War, the French surrendered.

In World War II, well, the French surrendered.

Don't be a big chicken, eat one.

The (whatever their fancy chicken sandwich name is)

    Only from Hardee's."

    Ouch. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Leave it to the House to waste the time of Congress on renaming French Fries.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. I'm PAYING THESE FOOLS FOR THIS?

If you read the article, it wasn't an act of Congress, just a writ issued by this committee chair. It was probably written by his aides, and only wasted as much time as it took for him to sign it.

A measured response, I think, to Chirac proclaiming <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,911866,00.html"; target="_blank">"whatever the circumstance, France will vote no".</a>

Gotta love those waskily wepublicans, though. "Freedom Fries"...lol. I guess it'smore alliterative than the Liberty Cabbage we used to heap on our Liberty Steaks. I wonder, though, if general consensus will drop the "French" altogether. We could be watching liguistic evolution at work.

That Hardee's commercial(which I have not seen myself) is just another example of how ignorant of history most Americans are. Of course, it's fashionable these days to bash the French and ridicule them and call them names such as cowards. Ironically, what most of those ignorants don't know is that France helped us defeat the Brits in the War of Indepencence with troops, money, training etc.

    <a href="http://www.ai.mit.edu/people/sfelshin/saintonge/frhist.html"; target="_blank">http://www.ai.mit.edu/people/sfelshin/saintonge/frhist.html</a>;

Maybe the french bashers should stop listening to Rush Limbaugh and his party line fanatics and start thinking for themselves a little. It's not just the French who don't want a war. It's almost every country in the world except for those whose support has come after a "loan package" or "favorable trade status" offer. Even in the UK , our strongest ally by far, the population is by a wide margin( in some polls up to 80% against) against a war. The against the war % is even higher in Spain.

Yes, absolutely. A farcical hamburger commercial is fantastic empirical evidence of the ignorance of History of 300 million people.

I'm sure the team of advertising writers was primarily concerned with providing a robust analysis of the humanities in the proper dour manner that one would expect from Hardee's when they are hawking exquisite beef products. Undoubtedly their attempt to provide a diligent historical portrait of Franco-American relations was well intentioned. But unfortunately the three Americans employed at the Smithsonian who have actually read a historical text in their meager cultureless American lives and are therefore qualified to vet Hardee's commercials and other works of public art for historical accuracy were too busy to inform the people at Hardee's that they were grossly ignorant of the long and storied French tradition of courage and valor in battle as exemplified in the Battle of Yorktown. And thus we are left with this horrible commercial. Hooray for Lafayette and fück Hardee's.

Perhaps once the executioner is done with Mr. Ney he can pay you a visit Gilsch.

Yes, foolish me! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> When the US walks into Iraq, looks at "the books", and sees how truly involved the French are/have been, what a "joke" we will all have, indeed.

    Just.

    Plain.

    Dumb.

These people are starting to undermine the sanity I credit them with, and that's making it hard for me to be taken seriously too.
