Think back to the summer of 1999...

Apple's Blue and White G3 towers were six months old, raging at 400MHz. Then suddenly, out of the blue, Apple speed bumped the towers by 50MHz on June 1, 1999 by a simple press release.

Then, Seybold SF came in August. Less than 3 months after the speed bump, viola, we had G4's!

Well, if this is true, then it could be setting the stage for the release of the G5. The reason I say this is because the G5 is much more powerful than the G4 at the same clock speed (according to rumor sites) and it'll clock much higher. If Apple were to release G5's at 1.2 to 1.6 GHz, the people who recently bought high-end G4's might get a little torqued. So, its possible Apple is going to bump the current line, add in DDR and some goodies and sell these until the G5's come out. Then, the performance gap between these updated G4 PM's and the new G5's won't be so big.

    Could happen. We'll see...

Crap, but what do I do? I need a new machine, and have the money, but I don't want to buy something when a VASTLY better machine is 3 MONTHS away.

If it's a DDR dual 1 GHz or better, I'll suck it up and get one. If not, I'm gonna be pissed because I don't know what to do.

    Arrgh.

yea I'm in the same boat as you, sucks huh. But i found a lucky solution for me, I'm gonna buy a my freinds pismo(could use a laptop anyway)and then wait for the G5. See I have a pc as my main comp and i despratly need a new mac (old one is a PowerComputing PowerCenterPro). So thats my solution, wait for the G5 if you can bare it, but i think their not gonna come out till MWNY, so concider a dual 1ghz if that comes out. That will last you a long time G5 or not

That's a very good point, but I still can't help feeling that 133MHz SDR is a little, well, obsolete. C'mon Apple, decent motherboard!

Wow, I didn't know that! Very interesting. MWNY could be the time for G5s. It's been long enough already...1.8 GHz isn't out of the question.

True, but Apple cannot let this govern their update schedule. It's more important to close the GHz gap than to appease recent Powermac buyers who have a childish "sour grapes" reaction to new hardware. Fact of life: buy a computer, in a few weeks it's outdated.

That said, I think your point makes lots of sense. If Apple boosts the current Powermacs up to 1 GHz, then when the low end G5 Powermacs are at 1.2 GHz or so, it won't appear to be such a shock.

In reality, a G5 running on a new mobo will obliterate any G4 powermac in existence. Even a 1.2 GHz G5 with DDR RAM, 400 MHz bus...it would kill a 1 GHz G4 powermac. But the appearance is that they aren't too far apart.

If I were in need of a new Powermac, then I would most definitely wait until MWNY, no matter if a speed bump comes next week or not. A G5 is imminent, and buying anything else is akin to begging that your $4000 Powermac will be totally obsolete and worth about $999 in a few months.

Actually I'd buy an iMac now. That high end iMac will have killer resale value! Just use the iMac for a few months, then when the G5s arrive, sell the iMac...you won't lose much $$ at all. Buy a superdrive iMac, slip in a 256 MB stick of RAM for 512 total, and I bet you could sell it around MWNY for $1700 or so.

Currently, there is a 5 week wait on new iMacs! Apple cannot build enough to meet demand..looks like the new iMac is going to be a hit like no other mac. I bet the G4 iMac is even bigger than the original iMac--all in the midsts of a recession! What an achievment, just imagine what Apple could do without their ball and chain named Motorola.

Hey you're in Palo Alto...it can't be hard to find out where Mr. Jobs lives...

Threten him with this: "Ok, Mr. Jobs - G5 or DDR Ram on your MoBo, or your garden gets it!"

He'll give you both a G6 and the successor of DDR...and then he'll tell you that he was confused cause he thought for the longest time that DDR meant, "Dance Dance Revolution" and he couldn't figure out why all these nerds were so much into a dancing video game.

Ball and chain named Motorola and Gardes getting crushed! LOL!

The G4 is a good chip and Motorola manufactures it. Dont be fooled by the megahertz myth.

The only question to ask yourself is: Do you need a new machine now? If you do, and Apple comes out with a new machine next week, then why not buy it?

Is a dual 1 GHz machine going to be too slow for you? Please. If you really need to, buy the machine now, and if it really looks like a better machine is coming, then offload your new machine on eBay before the new model comes out. It's as simple as that.

The problem is. Dual 1Ghz is still very lame compare to AMD and INTEL's offerings. Athlon and P4 can too go MP. That will make the purpose of Dual Ghz G4 look even more stupid.

Also prepare to see Apple to charge at the same $3499 or maybe even higher price for this model. That leads to another problem - Price to Performance. Which always isnt' Apple's strength, will turn even worse.

The problem really is that in many ways Yikes=crap, and I really don't want to be stuck with Yikes, as it were.

I actually know where he lives already. I have a friend that lives near him and sees him on the street all the time.

And two weeks after we got G4s, we got 50 MHz slower G4s.

If we do get a minor speed bump next week, it bodes well for the introduction of the G5 in the next few months.

Apple's World Wide Developers' Conference (WWDC) is in early May of this year. Pro products have been introduced at that event in the past.

And what a better place to tout the G5's new 64bit architecture than a developers conference?

    Right, my point exactly.

Wait for the "real ones" if you can afford to wait.

If you cannot afford NOT not wait.

However, if you need the thing, get the thing.

Please don't take us back to the summer of 1999.

    Since then -

Apple's CPU speed increase: 367 Mhz.

Intel's CPU increase speed increase: 1.5 Ghz.

We don't want a repeat performance of that.

If there is a small speed bump, dont look for DDR or a faster bus speed, those will be held out for the next major rev to the mother board...
