Ever see an image that your brain just can't parse into meaningful content, yet you suspect from context it's supposed to be something obvious?
I saw this image at the bottom of an MSN Messenger window this morning. (Evil, I know, but it's the only way to talk to my sister who uses MSN, and has her phone line tied up all of the time on the internet.)
I kept looking at it, but can't make any sense of it.
I figure if I get enough eyes looking at this, it's going to be obviously recognizable to someone.
Oh, yeah! I zoomed in on it too, but it didn't help. I had somebody else look at the picture first too, just to verify that another person would be confused, and it wasn't just me.
The problem with that image is that the color is not real. If it were a medical image it would be B&W. The flesh tone and the red cord were painted in some how.

When I zoomed in I could make it out ok. What's funny, though, is how our brains must be conditioned to find human faces in everything we see. Even after recognizing it as a fetus, my eyes would switch back and forth to seeing half a face. Like those vase-face drawings. The fetus's head and back outline the face, the chin cleft is an eye, there's a bit of fuzziness behind the back that looks like an ear, the stomach outlines a nose, the thigh cleft is half a mouth, and the back of the hip is a chin.

... Must have been hard getting that camera in there.
