Apple announces 3M sales of iPad mini, fourth-gen iPad

Sales of the new iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad reached 3 million total units over their launch weekend, Apple announced on Monday.

Unlike the third-generation iPad launch earlier this year, Apple just sold Wi-Fi-only models of its latest iPads, and none with cellular connectivity. The company said this weekend's sales doubled the 1.5 million Wi-Fi-only third-generation iPads sold at launch earlier this year.

Models of the new fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini with cellular connectivity are set to ship in "a few weeks." Apple did not detail separate sales figures for the iPad or iPad mini, but noted that sales of the iPad mini exceeded initial supply.

"Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad," said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We're working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand."

The company also said that while many iPad mini preorders shipped to customers, some are scheduled to be shipped later this month.

The iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad debuted in 34 countries last Friday, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and the UK, and will be available in many more countries later this year, including mainland China.

One report from last week estimated that Apple shipped 850,000 iPad mini units for the first week of sales. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities said that the iPad mini was in short supply, as Apple allegedly manufactured about 950000 units prior to launch.

Apple's online store quickly sold out of all models of the iPad mini. The company's most popular model over the launch weekend was the 16-gigabyte white and silver model.

In addition to direct sales through Apple, the new iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad are also available through AppleInsider sponsor MacMall by calling 888-338-6102.

Readers looking to buy a new iPad can offset the cost of the device by trading in their old model, and AppleInsider has put together a comparison of the best trade-in values from around the web, which can be found here.

I'm trying to imagine how analysts can put a negative spin on this.

They beat the projected Nexus 7 quarter in a weekend, I am sure we will find out how disappointing that is.

IMHO Apple declining to state weekend sales for the Mini is probably an indication there just weren't very many to sell (rather than no one wanted them). Not Apple-like to avoid announcing product launch figures if they're good. My completely uneducated guess is that fewer than 1M Mini's went home with new owners.

Tried one out this weekend, nice build quality but didn't like the scrolling book reader.

That's not what Apple announced. Read the article more carefully.

Based on what evidence? When I was at the Apple Store over the weekend, the place was packed and its like this every week end and during the week, they range from spurts of quiet times, shrouded by crowds.

No matter what, apple is selling product.

I just got my iPad 4 and love it. I can't wait for the next generation of apps to take advantage of the smoking fast processor.

sI think the sales are well spread between the ipad mini, ipad 2 and ipad 4.  worst case they are trying to hide there ipad 4 sales, those are still in stock. I went to the Apple stores and everyone were all over the mini's with poeple constantly asking the staff if they had it. I saw some ipad 2 being sold because of the mini shortage.

Imagine, they sold almost as many ipads wifi only as iphone 5.  Demand is very strong.

What do you mean "declining to state"?

edit: Ah, you mean for the specific product within that product category. Have they ever done that?

The media tends to set unrealistic expectations to Apple and then when they don't hit these unrealistic expectations instead of admitting the journalist is an idiot, they blame Apple.

Then when an Android product sells, they make it sound like android is taking over.

The T Mobile reps STILL manage to practically molest me to walk in their stores because I always refuse them. One of these days, they'll get the hint.

Of course I misread the headline :) This is actually more surprising.

For a new product, which the Mini is they normally do don't they? Seems I read figures for the recent iPhone 5 launch weekend, and that category isn't new.

It's funny how certain people (who shall remain unnamed, in order to protect the innocent and the ignorant) are attempting to downplay this into some sort of negative for Apple.image

Apple just sold 3 million iPads in 3 days! Who gives a shit about which models it was? Apple profits, regardless of which iPads people buy!image

And AAPL is up in the premarket now! 3 million is double the amount that the iPad 3 sold!

How many Nexus tablets do they move again? Oh, approaching ALMOST a million in a month? I see.........Hahahahaha..........Get lost suckers.image

Well, that's half a million more tablets than Amazon sold in all of last quarter. Instant 10.8% of the market.

Nothing negative about 3M  iPads sold in a single weekend. If you were referring to what I posted it was only to note that Apple declining to be specific with iPad Mini sales figures is likely an indication they're weren't many available for sale in my opinion, not that there wasn't any demand for them.

And the Mini is practically sold out.

But wait a sec. Some real smart geniuses clueless whiners and ignoramuses claimed that it was too expensive? image

Besides people like Donald Trump and Bill Gates, who can even afford such extravagent devices? image

I don't recall that. For the iPhone and iPad it's been a single new model but I don't recall them breaking out units for the older iPhones.

Even if they are trying to hide something I would think it's the lack of sales from the iPad (4) not the iPad mini as everything points to the iPad mini being a huge success. In fact, when I was in the Apple Store (twice) this past weekend to check out the iPad mini I never once looked at the iPad (4). I had completely forgotten it was updated. Note that the iPad (4) WiFi is available in 3-5 days and the Cellular version isn't available at all.

They will take a page from the Baghdad Bob play book: "Nexus continues to rule the world and the infidels' tablets are burning in the streets."
