I have a video clip shot in .avi format but imovie doesn't seem to import that type of clip. I was wondering what the easiest way was to convert a .avi clip to something else that is compatible with imovie. thanks

If you still have QT 4 PRO you are in luck as the indeo 5 codec will let you play the movie/save it as a qT file. if you run OS X and QT %Pro like me then you are just out of luck.......

not to mention no support for MPEG2, .vob, etc etc

    cheers

If your using X you can go to apple.com then the OSX tab, then downloads, then video. There you'll see a Divix for OS X 1163, or something like that, and with that comes AVI2MOV which will convert your avi into a QT movie. That should do it. If there are any codecs or anything try Divix Digest, and you'll find some cool stuff hyperlinking out from there. If you can't yet watch an AVI in QT you'll need some codecs for sure, but you will be able to export an AVI to DV with that, Also I suggest using AVI2MOV and exportingto DV twice. once from MOV, and once from AVI. I've done it, and there is a quality difference, I just can't remember which turned out better.

i dunno. its off a digital camera that i recieved for christmas. I download the clip using image capture and it is in avi format. and I checked the camera booklet and .avi is the only format that the camera will shoot in. Does anybody else have any ideas on how to convert these files?

Ok there is something very wrong going on with my camera. Even the .jpg files refuse to be opened in imovie. WTF? is my camera lying about the format or is imovie just being a bitch? Both my .avi movies and my .jpg pictures open in quicktime.

iMovie only opens DV formated movies. You can't even open a QuickTime movie in iMovie. You will need to pulldown the file menu in Quicktime, and use import for your avi, and then export it to DV format. As for your JPEG. I've never opened an image in iMovie, but I imagine it's the same. You'll probably need to convert it to pict, or tiff. Open the Help menu in iMovie and ask about importing still images it should tell you.
