Ton's of applications "unexpectly quit" all the time

Just today this started happening. Several applications have started consistantly quitting whenever I try to open a file with them. DiskCopy does, TextEdit does, Okita Composer does, and Preview does. All of them open themselves up fine, but as soon as I tell them to open a document they just die. I've tried logging in as root and open documents with them, but the same thing happens. It's really frustrating and inconinient. I've tried trashing the preference files for all of these, but that didn't do any good. Does anyone have any other clues as to what to do? I don't even know how to begin to troubleshoot this OS.

You may need to reboot and fsck your system. "fsck" is the unix command that repairs your filesystem if it gets damaged. Here's the process:
    • reboot into single-user mode by holding apple-s while booting

    • at the prompt, enter the command /sbin/fsck -y

    • if you get message that says **** FILESYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ****, fsck it again. Keep fscking until it says the disk is okay.

    • Once the disk is okay, enter the command exit.

Let us know if that doesn't help.
