So far this is frustrating...( PLEASE HELP!)

So I got a dual GHz G4 here, trouble is it is not connecting to the internet. First what I did was go into X and put in my info in the network stuff in OS X. With my G3 I connect to the internet using FreePPP software. I put in all the stuff that I could exactly how it is when I connect but it doesn't seem to be communicating with the network. Basically it is dialing normally and then seems as if it is connecting. Then it will just say "Disconnected".

Also I agree that X is harder than 9. I was trying the then reboot into classic (9.2.2) and it kept giving me errors. So then after a while I got it switched so I am now booting into 9.2.2 exclusively. I thought for the time being I could get on through 9 but I was dead wrong. I had all the FreePPP as is on my G3 (that Im using right now at 600x something resolution on an old monitor! ) and it says cannot connect no dial tone. WTF! I am not dumb here and was to assume that if I put all my ish into the OS X network ish then I could connect fine. This is really frustrating......

I ran a couple tests and assure you I will run a full series once I can get on the internet. Here are two:

Altivec Fractal Carbon Test- 7753.9 Mflops

iTunes 2 Convert to MP3- 19.7 @192Kbps

that seems low....

I don't have any games right now to test out (i.e. the infamous Quake III benchmark). If anyone can tell me where to get an X demo I will run that.

P.S. Now that I've made it boot into OS 9, how do I change it back to X? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    1. Congrats on the dual ghz! I'm jealous!

    2. If you can't connect, how are you posting here? Different mac I am assuming. Can you call your ISP and ask them?

    3. Quake3.....you need the full version to run it on OSX. You can get the X beta here: <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=8961&db=macosx"; target="_blank">http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=8961&db=macosx;

    4. To boot back into OSX, go under your Apple Menu items/Control panels/start up disk

I'm on my G3 (albeit using the IIci's monitor!) so luckily I can still get on here. I think the problem could be that my ISP needs some software for X. That's what my dad said and he will check it out tomorrow.

Another problem. Using Sherlock I cant search for anything! WTF! it gives me an error. I think it says something about indexing the hard drive. how do I index the hard drive? I wanted to get to the Terminal so I could change the GUI but can't cause I can't find it.... hmmm......

    I just hope I don't have a repeat here...

BTW this machine is fast. I thought the 933 in the store was a dual GHz seriously.

    The terminal is in Applications/Utilities.

indexing the hard drive is done automatically when you open Sherlock. It analyzes each file so that you can do the search by content which allows you to search for words within documents

Are you familiar with 'Startup Disk' in the control panel?

Ok check out the message I get when trying to search in Sherlock:

"Please finish entering search information. Enter the text to search for and select a hard disk or folder to search. If you're doing a custom search, select custom search settings by clicking edit"

i've done all that, I'm not a complete idiot. So what the f*ck is wrong with it?

Plus I cant find anything on the desktop.....

You have to select where you want to search..for example which partition/hard drive..just check where you want Sherlock to search.

Oh, by the way, you are welcome for the above information

Umm I realize that that's exactly what I did. Hence the "I'm not an idiot I already did that stuff" part of my post. That's the point, I did that and it still gives that same message.

Sorry if the above sounds rude or attacking, just maybe the mood I'm in right now. I didn't mean for it to.

As for indexing the hard drive, it states next to it "Cannot index".

In OS X you can't index the entire volume, because (the OS assumes) that it isn't all yours. You can only index your home directory.

You need to 'check off' the box next to the name of the Hard Drive(s) you want to search - in the sherlock window.

As for the internet connection problem.

Go to "network" system preference and make a new location. Make sure you've got Built In Ethernet selected, and try entering the settings again. Might help. I don't use DSL so I don't know for certain.

Did you check Apple's support pages?

Also, go to Mac Help in the finder, do a search for "setting up PPPoE". See if that helps.

LOL...Unbelievable. I have said 5 times that I did this and the same message appears. Hmm, ya'd think maybe I actually was doing the right thing and the computer gave me that message, no? What do I look like a complete moron?

As for your suggest re: my internet connection, I actually exactly what you said too last night night and it still did the same thing as before. I don't have DSL I'm stuck on 56k.

    chill the fuck out, tiger.

first of all, NOT a good idea to be short with people who are helping you. whether their info helps or not, it's also free. so if you want a punching bag, go call 800-275-2273. I'm sure that purdy dual ghz still has lots of life on its warranty, after all.

For your internet connection, the best thing to try is to reboot into OS 9. Then using the TCP/IP control panel (FreePPP is obsolete and no longer necessary), fill in all the information from your old system. See if you can connect properly in OS 9. If so, you've fallen victim to the one of the myriad dialup problems in OS X. See the Apple Support Discussions page for more information about this.

As far as Sherlock goes, I think you should really call AppleCare about that. It's obvious that you're just not able to convey exactly the problem via this board; no one's able to understand you, anyway. Someone else already indicated to you why the whole drive can't be indexed. If you're doing everything right (checking the box next to what you want to search, typing in a valid query, clicking the "File Names" radio button), etc., then AppleCare will be your best bet.

Are you able to perform Sherlock searches successfully in OS 9?

I would just reformat the hard drive and start from scratch and install a fresh copy 10.1.2. It's a new machine so it's not like it matters.
