Thinking about buying an iMac/400...

The wiz by me is clearing out iMac G3/400s (Blueberry) for $399. The price seems good and I see them going for more than that on eBay and those are used.

I believe it is

400Mhz

64 MB RAM

10GB HD

8MB rage 128

CD

do you think it is a good idea or not worth it. We would get it for my brother who has a PowerMac 9500/180MP right now.

If we did get it I would like to make the 9500 an OS X Server system for the house (same )user account on any computer, web serving). See any problems with this?

The hacks to get those kinds of comps working with X are flaky...plus the OS might recognize the seccond proc since it's not built to be used on that kind of comp.

Plus, you wont get any support with that kind of setup.

I've had OS X and OS X Server running on it numerous times. the 2nd processor isn't recognized yet. Ryan is supposed to be working on a solution but it's decent enough I woudl assume for basic server stuff.

OWC has a G3/400 upgrade special for 90 bucks for my 9500 this week. so amybe I'll look into that

That card is a good deal, too

But I'd go with the iMac, that deal is just unbelievable. I wish I had a Wiz around (sniff, sniff)

Yea, that is a pretty good deal. Make sure you up the RAM to around 320 if he is going to use X.

Go for it. Maybe tomorrow I'll stop by the Wiz near me and see what they've got.

Why don't you buy two, sell the 9xxx for $150 bucks, and use one of the iMacs as a webserve? I use one for my website (with 320 MB RAM though) and it's excellent (sure beats the LC575 i used before )

I thought about that but I've grown sort of an attachment for the 9500. It's cool to own Apple's first multiprocessor mac

Now I got another question. If I buy this imac will I be eligible for the $100 rebate on the iPod if I buy an iPod. I'm looking at the rebate terms and all it says for machine qualification is: Any Macintosh Computer bought within the rebate period.

so 399 for the iMac and then a 399 10GB iPod? Can't beat that

Purchasing assistance and discussion should take place in the Genius Bar section... Moving there now...

there's nothing tech support related about purchasing advice and your decision to include it under that title makes no sense at all. What the hell is purpose of General Discussion? useless posts of your computer and desktop?
