Naughty Chooser

Can anyone help....when trying to print in Classic or OS9 I get a message telling me to select a printer in the chooser. I do this, my printer is there, the words "usb port" come up in the list on the RH side, I've installed my printers driver in OSX and OS9 to be on the safe side (nb: it prints like a dream from OSX)...but it doesn't seem to acknowledge or save the chooser selection. WHY? HOW DO I FIX IT?

Please help. Have spent hours scouring Apple's support pages, installed all nesc software updates that seem relevant from printer manufacturer and Apple....

I want to cry! I just wanna print my stuff! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Have you actually clicked on "usb port" in the list on the right hand side to select it (even though it may already appear highlighted/selected)? This caught me out the first time I tried to set up a printer. Also, if you return to the Chooser, it doesn't seem to default to the settings last saved, giving the impression the last Chooser selection was ignored. Unfortunately the Chooser isn't the most intuitive part of OS9

If you still have problems, be sure to let me know so we can try something else. Just to recap though. You need to select both the printer and the means by which it is connected (the usb port) by clicking on both in the Chooser. When you close the Chooser, the selections won't be acknowledged, and if you reopen the Chooser, it may default back to the original selections.

Thanks - that worked...kind of! It does now print but wierdly...it seems to think that the paper size and font size are much larger than they really are. For example "hello" typed as the only word on a blank page at the start of the document e.g. as first line top LH side in arial 12pt turns out as the word Hello in what looks like about 48+ pt about 2/3rds of the way down the page.

I've checked the obvious stuff like paper size, the printer settings, the word printing and page set up settings.....nothing seems to help.

    ...any more advice?

    thanks again for your help.

    Hmmm... sounds very odd <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> Sorry you're still having problems.

You say you've installed the latest drivers from the printer manufacturer.

I'm not sure whether you're printing using OS9 proper, or the OS9 Classic environment within OSX. I'd try it using the former if you haven't already done so. Printing in the Classic environment may have funny effects.

I'm not sure which application you're trying to print from, AppleWorks, Microsoft Word or something else. I'd try printing from a number of different applications, perhaps Text Edit or even Internet Explorer, just to see if the problem is application specific.

I tend to use OSX almost exclusively these days. Is there a particular reason why you have to print using OS9? You can always copy your text from an OS9 application and paste in into an OSX application, even though you may loose some formatting.

I'm afraid thats all I can think of at the moment.

Just a few more thoughts on the above...

If you can print okay from OSX, its unlikely to be a problem with the printer.

If you have trouble printing from most OS9 applications, its likely to be a problem with either the printer driver or the system wide printer settings.

If you have problems printing from just a few OS9 applications, its likely to be a problem with the applications themselves.

This would help to narrow the problem down abit.

I guess its these little 'quirks' that make OS9 so lovable (and why I moved to OSX )

    Rod, thanks.

Seems to have worked itself out now...amazingly.

I just needed to be able to print from word as only have Office Mac 98...can't afford to upgrade to Office X right now and there are somethings I just can't be dealing with in Appleworks esp as need to share docs with PC users and email them about.

thanks again for all your help.

Office 98 on the Mac does seem to be a bit temperamental at times. Sometimes just rebooting the machine (at best), or reinstalling the software (at worst), seems to resolve the problem.

Office X is a lot of money. It might be worth giving OpenOffice a try when its finally released. Its good value (free!) and meant to be 99% compatible with Microsoft Office (although I appreciate you may require 100% compatibility for work documents).

Anyway, glad you've managed to get your printer working properly.
