A manufacturing engineer at Apple from 1989 to 1992 (yeah, that incredibly successful period) who then went on to 'innovate' at Google, Andy Rubin demonstrates that, not only will he steal Steve Job's operating system, but Steve Job's look as well...
Am I the only person who cant stand his face? This photo in particular. He always looks like a smug jerk
I agree with you. I've always hated that smug smirk on his face. You can almost see him thinking "that's right, I can steal code, make millions, and there is nothing you can do about it."
Nice trick mentioning Forstall as if that has anything to do with this. But it does give you an 'apple connection' to justify posting this obvious attempt at hit whoring.
As if people are madly Binging (or DuckDuckGo-ing or Baidu-ing or Googling) "Scott Forstall" any more.
But, speaking of connections, how about this:
Andy Rubin, Scott Forstall, and Steve Sinofsky could form a brand new company.
The company would develop a Google Glass clone, running "no compromises" Windows 8, and it would ship on schedule.
Even if it wasn't finished.
The differentiator from Google Glass would be the AirStylus, a bluetooth-equipped stylus that you could use to draw in the air, pull down menus in the air, tap targets in the air, and generally act even more dorky, by waving the stylus in the air, than you would with plain old boring Google Glass. AirStylus would give you even more excuses to totally ignore people you're looking directly through.
In a commercial sense, it wasn't. But innovation isn't always about selling millions of units of widgets. Many of the people who were involved there, including the founders and the young engineers they inspired, were brilliant engineers. Tony Fadell and Andy Rubin are just two examples.
Many people here have automatically negative filters for anyone who works for a competitor of Apple. But if you know anything about engineering or software development, you would have at least a grudging respect for what Rubin has accomplished. There are only a handful of people in the world who have done what he has.
To those who accuse him of "stealing", lest we forget, ask some former researchers at Palo Alto what they thought of Jobs. Ask some employees at Apple, past and present (including Ive), who have accused Jobs of taking credit for their ideas. Fact is - few (none?) of you know what happened at Google or Android. You are simply filtering rumors to fit your image of how you want to think of Google, etc. If you have any idea of how difficult it is to build (or borrow or steal or ...) something like Android (or iOS or Linux, or ...), you would respect Rubin's accomplishment. But you don't, because it is easier being an armchair critic rather than an engineer or entrepreneur who takes risks and create something.
Lest we forget, iOS is and will continue to be better because of Google and Android. For that, even Apple should thank Andy Rubin.

You missed a very key point. One of the main patents that Apple is asserting against Android was developed by two senior engineers at Apple. Get this, they developed it at the same time Andy Rubin was working there, and Andy Rubin worked directly under these two engineers at the same time this patent was being developed. That's a huge coincidence.

Not that I don't believe you but could we get some links? I have not heard anything about this before and you didn't provide enough information to even Google it.
This sounds like ancient history of the modem. There is one funny typo too referring to 'even the most modem modems'...
This was filed in 2002 and the way it it is written, as with many patents, it is just vague claims. I certainly don't like how fast Android was able to recreate such a similar OS after seeing the first iPhone but I seriously doubt it had anything to do with this patent. Rubin had been gone for several years before this patent was granted. I think Google just sat down with a bunch of PhDs and simply reverse engineered the thing from scratch. Seriously doubt Rubin having worked at Apple had anything to do with it.

So let me just summarise that:
Rubin stole stuff but you reckon Jobs did as well so that's okay.
Few of us actually know what happened but, thankfully, you're in the sole position of being the one that does.
"If you have any idea of how difficult it is to build (or borrow or steal or ...) something like Android (or iOS or Linux, or ...), you would respect Rubin's accomplishment."
This comment has really got me scratching my head...
You are somehow under the impression that engineers and entrepreneurs don't use armchairs , and;
Apple should be thankful that Google stole a large portion of their IP then used it to compete against them which then encouraged them to work harder.

Ah that Jobs stole from Xerox meme. Do some research, Xerox gave him permission to be there. Taking credit isn't stealing. Apple employees work for Apple. What ever they develop at Apple is property of Apple.
Google ripped off Java, iOS (even blackberry in pre-iPhone stage), oh and H.264.
It is difficult to develop OSs. Why can Apple develop iOS without stealing and Google cant? MS and blackberry developed original OSs.
"Google ripped off Java, iOS (even blackberry in pre-iPhone stage), oh and H.264.

If you are so convinced google stole iOS, why doesn't Apple have the balls to go after Google? Maybe they know they will get their ass handed to them in court. Defeating a Korean company in your backyard isn't the same ballgame as going after an american company also based in CA.
And all the haters making immature jokes about Andy Rubin's face and whatnot, at least he is promoted to a higher position from his previous role. Last I checked, Forstall was FIRED for pushing out the worst iOS update of all time.
Pretty sure this marks the end of the line for Chromebooks. Chrome Pixel was the Chrome OS team publicly eviscerating itself. Now Sundar Pichai is failing up to Android. Google will say something about focusing efforts on one platform and make some noise about integrating Chrome "innovations" into Android (i.e., it'll still have a web browser) before quietly axing the team and that'll be the last we hear of Chromebooks.
Google may be getting ready to pull the plug on Android.
Stop further development of Android. Why let Samsung make most of the profits? Milk as much revenue from the Android installed base as possible.
Develop a Chrome OS for the smartphones to be sold exclusively by Motorola.
Google/Samsung split is coming.
develop Chromes OS with Android foundation. That way they can cut Samsung off and make anyone who championed Android's openness looks like a complete fool.
Comments
AndyAndy's new chapter at Google will be leaving the company... Gone by Aug 1.
A public vote of confidence from Larry Page -- is the same as one from Pontius Pilate.

Not going to happen. That's not how Google's culture works.
