Is there a decent, relatively budget friendly (i.e. consumer, not professional)5.1 solution out there for the Mac? Is it a PCI sound card or is there a USB or Firewire box that can do the trick?
If the 5.1 isn't from a CD or DVD you won't hear what you want anyway. MP3 and even MP4 copies of Dolby 5.1 recordings are corrupted and sound like Krahp.

There are cards available and Mac OS X has Surrond Sound support
I think you're really out of luck, not many surround sound cards and not enough support from the OS... does DVD Player even output dolby digital anyway?
