DSL on OS X

For some reason I cannot surf the internet using OS X. I can use OS 9 without any problems. I can get email via DSL - OS X and go to a few web sites but not many. My IP does not know what else to try. I even erased and reinstalled both OS's but did not help. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Should I do a clean install again?

Any suggests would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

By the way, I have no problem surfing in either OS via the dialup modem.

how were you connected to the internet? Were you automatically connected or did you have to connect by hitting a button?

In OS X I had to use the ethernet connect via the internet connect software. It is located beside the clock.

    How is your DSL connected?

Do you have a DSL router?

If so does it also do DHCP?

I have seen a DSL router that also acted as a proxy of some sort and we had to enter the ip of the proxy for internet traffic to go through correctly.

The DSL is connected via an external Ethernet modem and for some reason OS X.1.5 does not give me the option of DHCP.

I do not have a router.

If it is DSL, why does it require you to use the Internet Connect software? Does it PPP or something weird like that?

i'm not sure but dosn't dsl use "ppp over ethernet"?

I am using DSL service and its always worked fine. I use a powerbook, and after connecting my book to a live DSL connexion, it did it all by itself.. I have a router, and a dynamic IP and whenever I boot up, I grab a new IP address from my ISP.. I have had a couple problems, one: I grab useless IP's from my ISP (usually start with 169) and two: I grab an IP that ends with 255, which inables me from accessing some web servers, like all of MSN, Hotmail, all that Jazz.. Very strange predicament you're in, I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

Do you know if the router requires special software? It is possible that it uses a non-standard protocol to communicate with the computers attached to it. In that case, it may be only Windows compatible. Do you know if this is the case? If you are using a router, and there is not another computer attached to it, it may be possible that the router is not configured correctly, and/or doesn't support PPPoE.

I don't have a router. I connect via ethernet's PPPoE. Connecting is not a problem, it is surfing the net.

It is alsmost like there is software on the computer that won't allow me to go to very many web sites. One day apple.com is fine the next day I cannot go to apple.com. It is really weird. I am thinking about erasing the hard drive again and trying to start over. I just hope that I will be able to use OS 9.

Should I just wait for OS X.2? What would you do? Do you think it would solve any problems?

Someone suggested that my hard drive on my Pismo Powerbook might be acting up.

    Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

    no software used.

you "configure" the router over a browser.

and "configure" means hitting the "ok"-button a couple of times. (plus changing default-password)

my router communicates with the web - my mac only gets access from the router.

i only got one mac connected - but with a hub there shouldn't be a problem to connect more mac's.

i'm getting the feeling your post wasn't for me...

    i'm fine.

btw: a router shouldn't use pppoe - try dhcp.

shandi: you said sometimes you can load <a href="http://www.apple.com"; target="_blank">www.apple.com and sometimes not?

this sounds more like a dns problem. check the settings (ip-address') with your isp. if this doesn't help - do you know other people with the same isp and dsl? ask them if they are experiencing the same problems. in that case maybe your isp's dns is the problem.

i'd try entering in other DNS servers for your connection.

    try 134.84.84.84

    and 128.101.101.101

My ISP had my Powerbook for 2 days and they claimed that they had OS X working fine with DSL but when I took it home, it did not work.

All the basic settings have been triple checked and they are fine.

My ISP have other Macs using OS X on their system, mine is the only one which they could not get to work.

I thank everyone for helping so far, any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does anybody think that OS X could be bugged??

I seriously doubt the Feds are looking at you.

Try viewing apple.com by typing this ip in to your browser: 17.112.152.32

When I have DNS issues with my DSL, typing in the ip address of a domain and then taking a screen for my provider usually speeds up my DNS repair / investigation (heh like it's hard to fix) ticket.

It doesn't *always* prove you're having a DNS issue but it works for me =)

Also...you mentioned not having dhcp as an option...did you happen to install an earlier version of OS X on top pf a newer version (this is a no no)? - I have seen that cause missing selections in certain windows before...I have also seen ****ed permissions cause missing selections.

    Good luck.
