i'd like to be able to rip cd's to aiff format while on the road, and without an internet connection. problem is i dont get the freedb info without the net connection. i see that it is possible to download the database from freedb.org, but how do i point itunes to use the downloaded database?

once you have a net connection, select all the tracks from the cd, go to the "Advanced" menu, and select "Get CD Track Names"

This is a little off topic, but why would you rip into aiff format? MP3 files are much smaller, and I don't think you'd notice a difference in sound quality.

aiff files rip much quicker and then i can rip to mp3/ogg/mp4 whatever i feel like when i have time to.

and the previous post did not answer my question.

so does anyone know how to store a local freedb database and have itunes use that instead?

last time I checked you couldn't even point iTunes at the real freedb, never mind a local copy, but here are some useful links:

<a href="http://www.freedb.ruebenschuss.de/"; target="_blank">installing the freedb server on mac os x</a>

<a href="http://www.cam.org/~cwatson/freedb/freedb.html&quot; target="_blank">using freedb instead of cddb with mac applications</a>

I think you'll have to rip with Audion or some other app.

looks like this app <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/andersw/icdc/"; target="_blank">here</a> can give you a back door into the iTunes database to enter info from freedb.org
