Serial Printer with Jaguar + CUPS ?

I currently own an HP Deskjet 870 Printer (serial, parallel) hooked to my B/W G3 using a <a href="http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA28x/"; target="_blank">Keyspan Twin Serial Adapter</a>. (USB to Serial adapter)

It works like a charm with MacOS 9, but I can't print with MacOS X 10.1.5

I just read on

<a href="http://www.allosx.com/1030154694/index_html"; target="_blank">allosx</a> that

<a href="http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3"; target="_blank">gimp-print</a> will provide support for additionnal printers using CUPS. (mine seems to be listed as "operational")

AFAIK, Print Center only recognises Ethernet, AppleTalk and USB printers.

Does anyone know if I will be able to print in MacOS X 10.2 using my serial printer ?

CUPS doesn't seem to recognise my serial adapter behind the USB ports, but the drivers are installed (I can see the serial ports using the System Preferences networking Tab.)

So I have to manually enter the Device URI for my printer. I assume it will be something like that:

usb://Adapter_SerialPort_1/My Printer

but I can't find the exact syntax.

1) Could anyone help me to find the correct URI ?

2) Installing the Keyspan drivers provides 2 serial ports (POSIX compliant) available in MacOS X named /dev/tty.KeyUSA28X11 and /dev/tty.KeyUSA28X12

Can I use these ports to redirect the print stream to my printer ?

May someone with a Beige G3, a serial printer and MacOS X 10.2 help me ?

    Franck,

I'm not sure if your adapter is equivalent to my Keyspan Serial to USB adapter (for Palm Pilot) but may very well be so...

Download the latest Keyspan driver for OS 9.2 (assuming you have OS 9.2). If you already have it then go to Apple control panel to "Keyspan USA 19 Manager." Mine is a version 2.4. Now the "Manager" should tell you that the adapter is active or not. Also at the bottom of the window it is "Advanced Settings. From there you'll be able to easily set it to proper settings for your printer. Restart your computer to OS 10.2. Hope that will work for you. If not then make sure the driver for HP 870 v OS X.x is uninstalled. I don't know why but I had trouble installing HP 940c printer for a person last week...ended up removing HP driver for OS X.x and it worked fine. Let me know how it goes... <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

kwondo, I have a Keyspan Twin Serial Adapter.

    model: USA28X

    I downloaded the latest driver.

Serial Ports show up correctly under /dev/ttyXXX

I have not driver for my printer since it's a serial model. HP doesn't provide MacOS X drivers for serial printers

    I still can't select serial prots in Print Center <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I have emailed Keysan Support last week: no answer so far.

    Franck,

As I have already stated...it is better NOT to install HP driver under OS X because MAc's "Print Center" already has instruction to almost all printers on the market. (If you do a sherlock search in OS X you'll see bunch of hp print files under system folder.

Just make sure that your Keyspan settings are done in OS 9 only. Select it using Keyspan USA 19 Assistant. Then restart in OS X. Try doing s system profiler. Hopefully your MAC will "see" Keyspan active under USB connection. It it does then you're set! If not, restart in OS 9 because it will most likely be your SETTINGS in the Keyspan options...good luck.

Of course I saw it, thanks,

    but

    1) HP 870Cxi is NOT a PostScript Printer

    2) lpinfo -v shows nothing

So, I nave no URI for my printer, and neither CUPS nor Print Center find it automagically.

System Profiler does see my Keyspan adapter.

Serial Ports are here and available (I can see them in System Preferences, Networking tab: I could connect a 56K modem if I had one. More over I can see them in the /dev/ directory )

But when I connect my printer and restart the computer, nothing happens in Print Center

Serial Printers don't work on OS X. Never have, Never will. I trashed a perfectly good hp LaserJet 6MP for that very reason. I assume you can buy a print server, but the cost is prohibitive when considering that a new printer would serve your needs now and for years to come even better.

For instance, my hp LaserJet 1200se prints faster and at twice the resolution than my old printer. At $400, the investment is worth it. If anyone knows anything about USB Printer Sharing, <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=001728"; target="_blank">I'd like to get it to work on my printer!</a>Please!
