Mp3 or MSA?

I'm trying to import an MP3 file into iMovie. One of my pupils brought in a (Windows ) MP3 player with USB and we tried to open one of them on the Mac. However, the Mac didn't recognise it as MP3 and iTunes wouldn't even look at it. On the desktop it had the suffix .MSA. Yet the lad swears that it showed up as .mp3 on his PC desktop. Help, please. How can i get the Mac to recognise it?

    I believe MSA stands for "Micro Soft Audio."

    Try renaming the file, and making it an MP3 instead of a .MSA file. I doubt that will work because most likely this person's Windows machine has extensions turned off (the default setting) and the icons for MP3s and MSA files are the same on the machine. To the user, they'll look like the same type of file even though they're not.

    I've just done a little hunting and found <a href="http://www.memorystick.org/mseasy/eng/application/audiofile.html"; target="_blank">this rather technical description</a>.

    It seems MSA is Memory Stick Audio, which means it's encrypted to, er, stop you copying audio files.

    Not much help, I'm afraid, but everything's working properly...

    No, the Microsoft audio codec is called WMA (Windows Media Audio).

    Their now codec (ver 9 - beta) is quite promising in my trials so far (on PC). <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/quality.asp"; target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/quality.asp</a>;
